The week ahead, for all you careSunday, August 9, 2009 TODAYBecause you didn't get enough soccer Saturday night at Candlestick, you can rest that hangover with the Community Shield match between Manchester United and Chelsea. And if you aren't into the kicking the ball thing, there's kicking another guy on Versus, featuring San Francisco's Danny Castillo. MONDAYThe Dodgers are in town, and Guillermo Mota is just waiting for a crack at Eli Whiteside. Meanwhile, Stanford football begins in earnest, and for those of you who can't resist wager, the Cardinal are 1-5-1 as a three-touchdown favorite, which they are bound to be in the opener at Washington State. WEDNESDAYThe U.S.-Mexico World Cup qualifier is on from Mexico City, and bets are that someone will mention Mexico's 5-0 win over the Americans in the Gold Cup final. Oops, wait, it's us. Also, T. LeRoy faces Chad Billingsley in a matchup of alpha dogs. THURSDAYThe Cowboys face the Raiders in the exhibition opener for both teams, and ... oops, the starters are already out. FRIDAYShaun Hill takes an early lead in his competition with Alex Smith by completing the only pass he is allowed to throw in the Broncos-49ers game at Candlestick. Hope all those Barcelona goals didn't tear up the field too much. In the meantime, the Giants play in New York against the Mets, a team that looks so very close to just driving home for the winter, and the A's are home against the always wacky White Sox. SATURDAYThe big Strikeforce beat-down-a-thon at Hewlett-Packard Pavilion features big deal Gina Carano versus someone named Cris Cyborg, which of course is an alias. Her real name is Martha Elaine Cyborg; she changed it so as to distinguish herself from all the other fighting Cyborgs. This article appeared on page B - 2 of the San Francisco Chronicle |
