Fleming: If you want to be listened to, you have to send a clear message and understand what people mean. Here’s how to send a clear message. Avoid the use of negatives when you communicate. Often you hear, “I don’t disagree.” It means I agree. So just say, “I agree.” Negatives are harder to understand. Why? Negatives are a two-step process and it takes longer to understand. Pay attention to your tone of voice. A varied tone is easier to understand. Your pace should not be too fast or too slow. When you speak too fast, it communicates nervousness and you have less credibility. Try to avoid environmental noise. Watch where you sit. Avoid backgrounds that are very distracting like having your listener looking out a window. You want to engage the listener. Watch your appearance. Long sleeves command more authority than short sleeves. Formal attire commands more authority than informal casual attire. Blue is the color of authority, so blue suits are a good choice. You can make it easier and more like that people you work with will listen to you. When you send a message that’s easier to understand and you command authority, people will listen to you.
