Should I Be Marketing My MLM Business On The Internet?

I recently watched a fascinating interview with MLM legend, Randy Gage, where he was being interviewed by Eric Worre on http://www.networkmarketingpro.com.

The subject of the interview was ‘Online MLM Morons’ – so of course (being one of them) I had to watch it.  A lot of what Randy said was good stuff – however – it could be misunderstood by some of the people out there who use my online systems.

Basically, the essence of what Randy said, although I would definitely encourage you to watch the full interview, is that using the internet to recruit is not duplicable, and that most of the people marketing their business online are idiots who are hurting the MLM profession.

Randy, I have to say that I agree with you on the part that most online MLM distributors spam the universe and behave like morons – however, I’d have to say that I disagree on ‘the internet not being duplicable.’

The internet is not a new phenomenon anymore, and although for the vast majority of its existence most people have been undereducated on the span of its use, it is a fact today that more than HALF of all marriages happen from a meeting that originated online.

We no longer live in the days when the world of the internet is confined to the dork (although dorks like me certainly enjoy the online universe too).  It is a fact that the future of commerce, of networking, and of business is through internet based technologies.

I think the misunderstanding is not in marketing, and not in network marketing, I think the misunderstanding is that there are simple ways that the average person can take their business online and operate it vastly more effectively than they could by building and operating it locally.

That is – for certain groups of people.  It’s also true that there are people who would be more successful doing home meetings and hotel meetings, as well.

I don’t build my business by spamming the internet, and I don’t build my business by ‘selling’ online.  I build my business in 3 stages.  They are:

  1. I build a list through online networking, advertising, and marketing.
  2. I build a relationship with that list over time by being a positive force in their life.
  3. I sponsor people from, and market to that list in a way that uses social proof, validation, multiple exposures, and a personal touch.

Isn’t it funny how that’s the exact same way that Randy Gage builds his business?

  1. He builds a list through meeting new people
  2. He builds a relationship with that list by being a positive force in their life
  3. He recruits people from that list in a way that uses social proof, validation, multiple exposures, and personal touch.

So wait… What’s not duplicable?

When Network Marketing came out, it didn’t duplicate very well then, either.  In fact, When Amway started, originally they sold soap door to door, much like our resident online MLM spammers – and gradually through the use and implementation of systems, (well – after Dexter Yager came along), the MLM world became one of selling a vision and of duplication.

What the internet has lacked for the vast majority of its existence is a duplicable way to succeed – and that problem has been remedied over the last couple of years by some extremely intelligent minds in internet marketing.

Much like how ‘tools’ in traditional methodologies take the guesswork out of presenting – online systems can do the same if they are designed with the right intent and for the correct purpose.

It’s unfortunate that some negative distributor’s advertisements can kill what can be such a lucrative source of income for so many people in the Network Marketing profession who struggle trying everything else.

For example, I had a moderate level of success building through home meetings and hotel meetings – however when I learned how to build relationships and market online – my success took off.  I went from struggling to eek out a measly $4,000 monthly check to earning $250,000 per year and more.

Now because I struggled in the traditional routes doesn’t mean they don’t work – and I certainly have people in my group who participate in those outlets – however it certainly does work better for me marketing my business online in a legitimate, viable way.

In conclusion, just as there are online morons, there are also ‘offline’ MLM morons.  Let’s make the world of Network Marketing more professional, both on and off the internet by embracing the simple concept of – ‘friendship first – sponsoring second’.
