Department Chooses New Structure to Manage Resources

Alberta's booming economy is driving change within Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. The unprecedented industrial, recreational and residential activity on our landscape has resulted in greater demands and increasingly complex issues. To meet these challenges, the department has adopted an improved organization structure for more efficient and effective customer delivery.

We've established a field structure with common management areas throughout the province. Nine Area Managers provide integrated field operations for a defined geographical area.

  • Area Managers are responsible for forestry, lands and fish and wildlife program operations, and consolidated administrative and support services.
  • Our new management area structure is also integrated with the core business divisions of the department, with area managers for certain areas reporting to executive members of the department.
  • Foothills, Woodlands, Smoky and Lesser Slave report to the Assistant Deputy Minister of Forestry.
  • Southern Rockies, Clearwater and Prairies will report to the Assistant Deputy Minister of Lands.
  • Peace, Upper Hay, Lac La Biche and  Waterways are separate areas, with defined management structures based on their needs. For management purposes, Peace and Upper Hay will report to one Area Manager, and  Waterways and Lac La Biche to another. These two Area Managers will report to the Assistant Deputy Minister of Fish and Wildlife.
The departmental organization chart provides further information on this change.
