Information

Story

An evil witch named Cackletta has stolen Peach's voice and plans to use it to awaken the legendary Beanstar in the Beanbean Kingdom. With its power she will have all of her wicked wishes granted. Mario sets off to stop her, but finds himself laboured with Bowser Koopa (who is as angry about the whole thing as Mario), and Luigi gets unwillingly dragged along. Bowser is soon knocked out of the equation, so it's up to the two brothers to save the Mushroom Kingdom (and the Beanbean Kingdom) once again.

Gameplay

Mario and Luigi learn unique moves that they use to navigate the world and battle enemies. They can also team up to use the moves on each other, giving you more effective moves. You can switch which brother is in the lead, and for some puzzles you will have to control both at the same time (A controls the brother in front, and B controls the one behind).

When you hit an enemy you move into battle mode. These side-on, menu-based battles require a lot more attention than most RPGs. The special attacks from the previous Mario RPGs return (press the button at the right moment to do more damage), but now you can completely dodge attacks by leaping out of the way or swinging your hammer. You need split-second timing to successfully dodge, and in some cases it is absolutely required.

Cameo Appearances

Sledge Bros. House

While on your travels to the Beanbean Kingdom you will come across a jumping game against the Sledge Bros. Check out the background of the gatehouse. A castle scene from the original Super Mario Bros. can be seen on the back wall, and the flagpole will rise during your skipping game.

Return of Geno

When you reach Mushroomtop Village, you must head to the arcade and play a bar-tilting game before you can do anything else. When the instructions are being read out to you, you will notice your host is none other than Geno. Geno was one of the heroes from Super Mario RPG on the SNES. This is his first appearance since that game (due in part to Nintendo and Square patching up old differences).

Yoshi's Movies

In the Yoshi Theater you will find posters of upcoming productions - actually Game Boy Advance games. From left to right you will find "Kirby Story", "Wario" (artwork from Warioware, inc.), "M&L" (Japanese Mario & Luigi logo) and "Legend of Stafy" (from the Japan-only Starfy series).

Easter Eggs

High-Jump Coin Trick

Have Luigi pound Mario to flatten him, then have Luigi use the high jump attack on Mario's head. Before Luigi lands on Mario, have Mario do a regular jump. Luigi will be hit like a block, lose 1 HP and you will gain a Coin. Keep hitting Luigi this way over and over to rack up a lot of Coins. The trick stops working when Luigi is down to 1 HP. The trick cannot be used to kill Luigi.

Photo Discount

In Beanbean Castle is a photographer that takes pictures for your passport. His usual fee is 100 Coins, but if you say "No" he will discount it to 50 Coins.
