This large but basic high street pub was rebuilt in 1930 by brewers Mann, Crossman & Paulin and has changed very little in the intervening three-quarters of a century. The frontage is quite plain and has doors which lead to the various separate rooms inside. On either side there are two rooms, one behind the other and in between them, at the front, a small private bar. On the left the public bar has what is now a games room behind it: the only real change is the loss of double doors between the two. The same layout (and loss of doors) is found on the right but the hierarchical distinction between the two sides is reflected in the greater elaboration of the counter on the saloon side, which is also graced with wall panelling.

In the middle of the servery is an example of a publican’s private office. CAMRA is only aware of 11 (8 in London) glazed-in Publican’s Office pubs left in the whole of the UK including fine examples in other of Britain's Real Heritage Pubs the Viaduct Tavern, Smithfield, London EC1; Argyll Arms, Soho, London W1; Falcon, Battersea, London SW11; Beehive, Tottenham, London N17; and Feuars Arms, Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. Also; other examples can be found at Joiners Arms, Camberwell, London SE5; Winchester, Highgate, London N6; Cauliflower, Ilford, East London; Old Castle, Doncaster, South Yorkshire; and Athlectic Arms, Edinburgh, Scotland.

The toilets at the back on the left-hand side still retain their original tiling. On the far right externally is a staircase leading to an upstairs function room and further right still is what was originally an off-sales shop. Like other examples at large interwar pubs it isn't even part of the main pub structure (an even more separated shop can be found at the Doctor Johnson in Barkingside.
