LOTHIANS - West Calder, Railway Inn National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors Part One 43 Main Street, West Calder, EH55 8DL Tel: 01506 871475 Public Transport: Railway Station: West Calder Pub Food: Meals Monday to Friday lunchtimes and evening, all day Saturday and Sunday Listed Status: Grade C(s) Built c.1900, this little-altered archetypal Scottish town bar with a corner turret attracts a wide range of customers. It has heavy original fittings in the form of a U-shaped bar counter, disused (but intact) jug bar with hatch as you enter, and modest island gantry (effectively in two parts with an arched walk-through central section). The dado-panelled walls are original; the large Teacher's 'Celebrated Whiskies' mirror could be 100 years old but the seating and floor covering are new. Carrying on down the passage on the right and you will find a lounge at the rear, also with old dado panelling and good cornices. Visit the gents', if you can, for the mightily impressive marble urinal, tiled dado walls and quarry-tiled floor. |
