The Halifax architects Jackson & Fox were responsible for all of Webster’s brewery’s building work between the Wars. They employed a variety of design styles, but the Art Deco they favoured for the interior of the Three Pigeons (built 1932) has left us with something particularly rare and special. An octagonal domed drinking lobby with a (restored) terrazzo floor forms an impressive little centrepiece from which three rooms and the serving area all radiate. Some authentic features have been lost - the outside windows, and the original geometric decoration of the lobby ceiling - whilst the tap room’s walls are perforated by intrusive modern openings (created, no doubt, to answer the now-outmoded requirement for ‘supervision’ from the bar). But a great deal survives to delight;- flush-panelled doors and wall finishes in oak veneer, fitted seating throughout and a good bar back-fitting with mirrored panels and lettering advertising ‘Green Label’ beer. (The back non-smoking room is a modern addition).
