BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER- Issue #22 (Comic Review)

COMIC SCREAMSSwell. That’s just swell. Let’s create a cute villain that’s a little white cat with little white fangs, and call it “Vampy Cat.” And then let’s allow them to turn from adorable little furballs into esophagus diving maniacs that take over bodies and spout lines about killing female slayer ovaries. And then when they get mad, they form together like Devastator from TRANSFORMERS into a huge plush beast called... “The Swell”? That just leaves me feeling... well, just swell I suppose.

CITY OF DUST: A PHILIP KHROME STORY – Issue #4 of 5 (Comic Review)

COMIC SCREAMSAs the dust clears, our climax emerges. The things that go bump in the night have a thing or two to say about the future of humanity, and it isn’t pretty. In fact, it isn’t even real on so many levels. Robotic vampires, werewolves, and monsters; all created from a somewhat mad scientist, all evolving from a storybook that imagined them, and all being created from the imagination of Steve Niles. Reality only exists when you put the book down and take that damn trash out to the curb.

This year, the man that was named in part of Marvel Comics Ghost Rider character will see more action in the funny books with the green goliath, HULK, and the merc with a mouth, DEADPOOL. THE CHRONICLES OF DR. HERBERT WEST #3 (Comic Review)

COMIC SCREAMSRemember back in high school when you had to run the eight laps around the track, and though you tried to do it to impress the cheerleaders in your class, you end up saying “screw this, I’ll take the F” around the fourth lap? Or that paper you had to write in college, maybe it was on insomnia, and no matter how hard you tried to write that sucker, you always ended up falling asleep? Fatalism and irony are two forces many succumb to when the going gets tough, and for Dr. Herbert West... add misfortune, misdirection, and insanity to the list.

HACK/SLASH #20 (Comic Review)

COMIC SCREAMSIt was bound to happen. The “off” issue that is. The one that tumbles a bit, derailing a steady train to its destination and into a dried-up, creek bed. And it’s no fault to Tim Seeley’s writing or Kevin Mellon’s art really, or anyone else involved in the book creatively. It’s just one of those things you’ve come to expect with an idea that’s been around awhile: A fall. For HACK/SLASH and issue 20, I can honestly say it’s only a bruise on the knee-cap from slipping on the ice at the skating rink.

DEAD OF NIGHT: WEREWOLF BY NIGHT 1 & 2 (Reviews)

Either it’s a full moon, or Marvel Comics MAX line appears to be the premiere line of comic books for adult storytelling. The long-running PUNISHER series under the MAX banner has garnered a cult following to say the least, if not a dedicated readership from fans and creators alike. Two years ago, the revamp of TERROR, INC. hit the shelves and took a lousy character from the 90’s and transformed him into the ultimate badass, making top ten lists across the board, including yours truly. SIMON GARTH: ZOMBIE and FOOLKILLER also returned to legitimacy thanks to great writing and edgy art, as well as the line giving birth to now heavy-hitter baddy THE HOOD as seen in NEW AVENGERS. So for Marvel MAX to bring back a legendary cult classic from Marvel’s past and make it right was only a natural thing to do with such a killer track record in recent years. Ladies and gentlemen... beware the triumphant return of WEREWOLF BY NIGHT!

THE WALKING DEAD #57 & #58 (Reviews)

Tough guys always cry the worst. Maybe because they don’t have practice. Or maybe because they hold it in so long, the tears come busting out like a chest-burster wearing a top hat and tuxedo. The main thing is, tough guys don’t cry. So when they do, you better run. Not out of fear. More like torment from seeing a visual that could haunt Clint Eastwood into retiring his squinty-eyed look and grinding teeth. “That’s not tough... punk. That’s just wrong.”

PLAN 9 STRIKES AGAIN in the comics pages; exclusive art

People often complain about sequels to works that were perfect and complete in the first place. But the truly discerning can easily see that GONE WITH THE WIND needed to be followed up with SCARLETT, that the plot threads left dangling by 1976’s KING KONG had to be tied up years later in KING KONG LIVES and that the daring themes of the Sci Fi Channel flicks BOA and PYTHON cried out for further exploration in BOA VS. PYTHON.
