Time to close out one week, and open the books for a fresh one. The battle for horror supremacy rages on and FANGORIA continues to fight the undead army, leaving yet another pile of mangled flesh in the smoldering wreckage behind us. Let's take a look back at the past seven days worth of FANGORIA news, features, reviews, blogs and more.

Every slasher fan has their own choice as the best in the original Jason Voorhees film series, and mine is FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES. From its opening title that winks at the James Bond flicks, this entry provided a welcome sense of knowing humor to the by-then repetitious proceedings, without making fun of Jason himself. (As writer/director Tom McLoughlin has often stated, and does so again on the new Deluxe Edition DVD, that was one of franchise producer Frank Mancuso Jr.’s directives when McLoughlin took this gig.)

During the finale of FRIDAY THE 13TH PART III, we catch a few glimpses of Jason’s face. The bastard flashes a twisted smile not once, but twice at the woman he’s hoping to murder. In THE FINAL CHAPTER ( buy it on DVD here), Jason is again unmasked by the Final Girl—and she too is given a freakish grin to haunt her dreams. My question: Does this Jason always smile when he kills, or only when he’s face-to-unmasked face with his prey? Chew on that the next time you watch this ballbuster, rightfully hailed by many as the most entertaining and satisfying in the FRIDAY series.

It's time for another installment of FANGORIA MUSICK's LISTS OF DOOM - the column where we track down some of your favorite (or soon-to-be favorite) bands to get their thoughts on on the world of horror. For number 15, we caught up with Mika Andre, bassist of the French band, Eryn Non Dae, whose Stateside debut HYDRA LERNAIA will arrive in-stores on June 23rd via Metal Blade Records. Mika's List of Doom is a bit different than what we usually see, with a strong lean toward Asian Horror. Mika, the stage is yours...

The Horror Professor
Film News
He’s been called everything from the Maestro of the Macabre and the Master of Italian Horror to the “Garlic Flavored Hitchcock”, but true horror fans know him as simply Argento. Last weekend at Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors, Manhattan’s Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center was abuzz over the mere notion of his pending presence, even overshadowing the likes of horror visionaries Tobe Hooper and Guillermo Del Toro.

Short Cuts
If you were lucky enough to attend Fango’s recently wrapped Weekend of Horrors, you hopefully were also fortunate enough to check out the phenomenal short INSATIABLE, which screened on Sunday. As much about vampirism and fetishism as it is about a dwindling marriage, the flick is a rare silent pleasure, harking back to the days when creating films was more about experimentation than making money.

Last week, I received a copy of VILE THINGS: EXTREME DEVIATIONS OF HORROR in the mail from Comet Press. The book is an anthology style collection of stories from a variety of writers including Ramsey Campbell, Graham Masterson, and CJ Henderson. I read horror almost everyday and very little actually disturbs me. That doesn’t mean they aren’t good, it just takes a lot to disturb me.

At the recently concluded Fango Weekend of Horrors convention in New York City, writer Dennis Paoli (pictured), a longtime collaborator with director Stuart Gordon, briefly discussed NEVERMORE, an upcoming Los Angeles stage project based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe that the two have collaborated on, starring their favorite actor Jeffrey Combs. Fango chatted with Paoli afterward to get more details on the impending production, as well as a couple of his and Gordon’s feature projects.
