Marla's Thoughts of the Day

A Newborn time at the Weekend of Horrors...

Marla and DavidOk, ok…so everyone and their brother are going to write about their experience this past weekend – oh and to clear it up – I am referring to our just-wrapped FANGORIA's Weekend of Horrors – located in my great hometown of New York City!

I’ve blogged a few times but never was it about me me ME! So I have that right, don’t I?

What the Hell is going on in Kansas? An interview with Patrick Rea

NAILBITERI met Patrick Rae at the Chicago Weekend of Horrors back in 2007. Though I'd already known his work quite well, that was the first time we'd met in-person. At the time we were working on Fangoria TV and Patrick’s films were featured regularly to our lineup. I was taken then and continue to be taken with his fantastic sense of what short films are and can be. Naturally we exhibited Patrick’s short films numerous times over the years – not only on our website – but at almost every Fangoria Weekend of Horrors Convention since 2006.

NSFW! PERVULA - The Naughty Nosferatu

pervula-one-sheetOne day I was sitting in the Fango offices at my desk when a package arrived. It was addressed to me courtesy of the FANGORIA FRIGHTFAN FILMFEST. I opened it up and there were seven short films inside, one of which was entitled KILLER KRAPPER (which, I will admit got me, as I love bathroom humor), and I thought to myself, anyone who calls their film KILLER KRAPPER is likely okay with me. A REMOTE short before THE INTERVENTION

remotethumbIf you ever visit Los Angeles and feel like taking a tour of all the old theaters, you will be absolutely amazed at the fantastic history represented there. And if you are as into old theaters as I am, you will be all the more stunned by the unbelievable beauty of some of these lasting landmarks. FANGORIA has teamed up with one of the best- the completely renovated, state-of-the-art and amazingly gorgeous Fine Arts Theatre at 8556 Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills; a theater dating back to 1939, a pivotal year for film. Fellow fright film fiends, this is the home of FANGORIA'S MIDNITE MADNESS, where each Saturday night at midnight we present the best in horror cinema, with each feature preceded by a stellar short film. I have already written that I champion the short film, so we’ll move past that.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING Short Films...

FRIGHTFAN FILM FESTThanks to FANGORIA (and just a tiny bit to me), the short film continues to have a champion. And now, we're going to step it up and show them on the big screen…yes you read that correctly. Some of Fango’s favorite shorts are going to run in front of the features at FANGORIA's MIDNITE MADNESS - our return to the world of midnight horror movies at the The Fine Arts Theatre, 8556 Wilshire Blvd. in none other than Beverly hills! (Phone: (310) 360-0455, admission is only $8 and are available online as well as the box office).

Of course, I am jumping out of my skin (well, almost jumping) about this. How long has it been since short films had their chance of being exposed to a real live audience in the theater (albeit to wackos like us who love horror)? We are making great strides, people.
