IGN AU's Top Ten Games of E3

E3 2009 represented an incredible showcase of games, so coming up with the AU team's top 10 was easier said than done. After vigorous debate, however, these are the games that impressed us the most. Our only real criteria for inclusion was that the game must be displayed, running in real-time, with actual gameplay. No on-stage presentations, no tech demos, videos of gameplay and no pre-rendered 'target renders' (sorry Pirates of the Carribean: Armada of the Damned. Next year, maybe). The list below is the best of the best; games that pushed their genres forward, impressed us with technical and creative might and reminded us of exactly why we all love games – and endure sweaty arm pits and sales pitches just for a fleeting glimpse at the next big thing. On to the list...

Post-E3 2009: The Benefits of Natal

Microsoft's demo of Natal was one of the most talked about moments from E3 2009. The first question was: Does it work? And yes, it does indeed work. Microsoft's demonstration of Natal focused on games created specifically for the new motion-sensor camera. But what has us excited for Natal are the ways it can enhance games that use the normal controller. Natal can recognize facial expressions and even subtle hand movements.

E3 2009: Hands-On Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter

Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter is a direct sequel to the original Drawn to Life (and the DS Next Chapter continues the story from the Wii Next Chapter), calling on your inner artiste to create a world, and then save it. We liked 5th Cell's DS Drawn to Life, so taking a pre-alpha build of Planet Moon's console version for a quick spin was a must.

E3 2009: Hands-On Medieval Games

Listen: in this day and age, it is A-OK to have stratospheric standards when it comes to minigame party titles on the Wii. There are so many out there, it practically qualifies as a survival skill. So when I tell you that you that Bethesda's Medieval Games is far from the best one I've ever played, that should indicate a pretty clear course of action.

E3 2009: Hands-On Academy of Champions

Watching Ubisoft's painful, painful E3 press conference last Monday, the biggest laugh wasn't anything that came out of Joel McHale's mouth. To be fair, the whole thing was a total mess long before Pele took the stage and stalled F-O-R-E-V-E-R while technical difficulties delayed the trailer for his new soccer game, Academy of Champions. And after all that waiting... well, that trailer was just a fat, easy, Harry Potter-ripping target. Right around the time paintings came to life in the winding castle halls, I started wondering when Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling would file their Cease-and-Desists.

E3 2009: James Patterson's Women's Murder Club First Look

OK, I'll admit it -- I volunteered to cover James Patterson's Women's Murder Club: Games of Passion during an E3 meeting a few weeks ago because I thought the game sounded like it was going to be hilarious. I don't know what I was expecting -- a club of women who go around killing people, some kind of passionate romance novel/game hybrid, or something else insane -- but that's not what this game it.

E3 2009: Our House Party Preview

Disappointed there was no Mario Party at E3 this year? Majesco is stepping in with a home improvement-themed party game called Our House. The DIY angle is augmented by the Home Depot license, which you can see in sequences like shopping for tools at a warehouse or from a weekly ad. It's not too obtrusive. In fact, a license like this that is in tune with the game's theme actually enhances the experience, rather than distracts from it.

E3 2009: Booth Babes Assemble!

We heard rumblings, rumors that this year's E3 planned a return to its epic roots. And that the Booth Babes were going to return as well. And they did. Lots of them. Wearing nothing but smiles and Wiimotes, most of them. Yes, it is true - one of the finest Babe Institutions has been restored, and IGN Stars was there to experience the eye-candy first hand. E3 2009: Bananagrams iPhone Preview

Majesco describes its upcoming iPhone word as "free-form Scrabble." It's an apt description, as you are given a bag of letter tiles and no grid. From there, just go wild (or bananas, if you prefer) to create words using all of the letter tiles in as short of time as possible. Longer words are naturally worth more points. Once you have used every tile, tap the submission button and Bananagrams will score your results -- and reject any non-words.

E3 2009: Mini Ninjas DS Hands-on

If you've read our E3 2009 write-up for Mini Ninjas on full-scale consoles, you'll understand that we're a little bit chuffed about this game. So far, we've waged war as a boar, collected natural ingredients to create magical potions and items and we've even gone rafting in an upturned straw hat. Now, thanks to the glories of the Nintendo DS, you can do all of this on the move.

E3 2009: Unbound Saga Progress Report

Believe it or not, I was the first person to tell you all about Unbound Saga on the PSP. Way back at the New York Comic-Con, I broke the news that this beat'em up in the style of Comix Zone was coming to the PSP exclusively through the PlayStation Network and detailed the story -- our hero, Rick Ajax, is a comic character who knows that he's in a comic and is hell-bent on beating everything and everyone in between him and The Maker. Since then, not much has changed.
