NASA postpones Endeavour launch due to hydrogen leak
Cape Canaveral, Florida (AFP) June 13, 2009
The US space agency has postponed Saturday's launch of the space shuttle Endeavour due to a hydrogen leak -- in a setback for a mission aimed at completing the 100-billion-dollar International Space Station. The launch had been scheduled for 7:17 am (1117 GMT) from Cape Canaveral in Florida. But "the launch is scrubbed, it's official," spokesman Kyle Herring told reporters, saying it wou ... read more

Tight squeeze ahead on space station
Washington (AFP) June 11, 2009
Things may get a little tight at the international space station next week when it is set to be a temporary home to 13 astronauts with the arrival of the shuttle Endeavour and its seven crew. It will be the first time so many people have stayed on the orbiting station at once, and the 12 men and one woman will also represent the main countries involved in constructing the 100-billion-dollar ... more

Japan, India plan joint space research project
    Tokyo (AFP) June 12, 2009
Japan and India plan to launch their first joint space research project this year, an experiment in growing plants in zero gravity, a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency researcher said Friday. The two Asian powers are set to launch a small and unmanned Indian-made satellite in October, carrying Japanese laboratory equipment, that is set to orbit for about one week at a height of around 600km ... more

Submillimeter Array Finds Massive Core In Cold Dark Cloud
Manoa HI (SPX) Jun 12, 2009
Astronomers using the Submillimeter Array atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii have found a massive, quiescent object in a dark cloud that is likely to be the direct progenitor of a massive star or stars. Dr. Jonathan Swift of the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is presenting these results at a press conference at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Pasadena, California ... more

The Search For ET Just Got Easier
London, UK (SPX) Jun 12, 2009
Astronomers using the Science and Technology Facilities Council's (STFC) William Herschel Telescope (WHT) on La Palma have confirmed an effective way to search the atmospheres of planets for signs of life, vastly improving our chances of finding alien life outside our solar system. The team from the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) used the WHT and the Nordic Optical Telescope ... more

NASA's Ares I-X Rocket Achieves Historic Hardware Milestones
Cape Canaveral FL (SPX) Jun 12, 2009
NASA's Constellation Program reached two major processing milestones this week as two new pieces of Ares I-X hardware were transferred for final assembly in preparation for the first flight test of the rocket later this summer at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Once stacking operations begin later this month, it will be the first time a new vehicle has been stacked on NASA's Mobile ... more

Supernova Remnant Is An Unusual Suspect
Boston MA (SPX) Jun 12, 2009
A new image from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory shows a supernova remnant with a different look. This object, known as SNR 0104-72.3 (SNR 0104 for short), is in the Small Magellanic Cloud, a small neighboring galaxy to the Milky Way. Astronomers think that SNR 0104 is the remains of a so-called Type Ia supernova caused by the thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf. In this composite ... more

Ultracool Stars Take Wild Rides Around The Milky Way
Pasadena CA (SPX) Jun 12, 2009
Astronomers have found that stars of a recently discovered type, dubbed ultracool subdwarfs, take some pretty wild rides as they orbit around the Milky Way, following paths that are very different from those of typical stars. One of them may actually be a visitor that originated in another galaxy. Adam Burgasser and John Bochanski of MIT presented the findings at the American Astronomical ... more
