FANGORIA GRAPHIX - SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Welcome to the Submissions Guidelines for Fangoria Graphix.  Please do not attempt a submission without first reading the guidelines closely.

General Note

Fangoria Graphix welcomes submissions.  We will read everything, but we may not have time or resources to devote to responding to every submission that we receive.  We understand that it’s a hard thing to do, breaking into comics.  And we would like to provide feedback to everyone for every kind of submission.  As it is, this isn’t feasibly possible.  Rest assured; if there is something in your material that speaks to us, we will respond to you in a timely manner.  For all packets and submissions, electronic or print via ground mail, please include a cover letter, resume, and complete contact information.

After a word on Completed Projects, our guidelines are divided into sections for Writers, Pencil Artists, Inkers, Colorists and Letterers.

Completed Projects

The most ready type of submission that we would accept at Fangoria Graphix is a completed project.  Completed does not have to mean colored or lettered; it would mean scripted, penciled and inked.  We may also accept books that have been penciled tightly enough (without inks) for our colorists to handle easily.  This does not mean that we automatically accept all completed projects.  We mean that it is merely easier for a completed project to find acceptance and a place on the schedule than a project that exists at the proposal stage and would need time to bring together a creative team.

Writers

Fangoria Graphix prefers full scripts for the purpose of submissions.  With your writing submission package, you will need to include:

-Our Submission Agreement:  Please find our Submission Agreement here. The Agreements exist to protect all parties in the process.  You must include one with every submission.  We will not examine any submission that does not arrive with a signed agreement.  We are not looking for pitches on licensed properties.  We are not looking for pitches for sequels to the properties that we already publish.  We are looking for original work, primarily or sufficiently related to the horror genre.

-Synopsis:  A synopsis gives us the run-down of your story.  For a one-shot or short story for anthology inclusion, the synopsis should be a single page.  For a mini-series or original graphic novel, the synopsis should be two to four pages.  Tell us the plot and character arcs in clear language, articulating themes and important points along the way.   Do not tease a cliffhanger; tell us your ending and why it matters.

-Script:  We require that you submit the full script for one-shot and short story proposals.  For minis, we require that you submit the complete first issue script.  For original graphic novels, we require that you submit the first ten pages.

Pencil Artists

We prefer to see six pages of sequential art.  Use this opportunity to demonstrate the dynamism of your composition.  Pin-ups and character studies are fine additions (no more than four), but what we really want to see is the way that you move a plot on a page.  Make an effort to use characters of different genders, ethnicities, heights, weights, etc.  Show backgrounds and everyday items as well.  We want you to show us a world in motion.

One of our rules is our interior artists do the covers of their books as well.  Therefore, there is no need to submit to solely be a cover artist.  Please include the Submission Agreement with your samples.  We will accept both print and electronic samples.  For print samples, please only send copies; keep your originals for yourself.

Inkers

Many of our projects are actually produced by coloring off of tight pencils.  Nevertheless, we will accept inking submissions as there may be projects more suited to the addition of an inker to the art team.  As with pencil artists: we prefer to see six pages of sequential art.  Ink scenes that correspond to the description of what we want to see from pencil artists.  This being the horror genre, a command of the nuances of light and shadow would be particularly important.  As with other submissions, please include the Submission Agreement with your samples.

Colorists

Again, we prefer to see six pages of sequential art.  If you are capable of colors in markedly different styles or palettes, please feel free to submit examples of your multiple approaches in one package.  Remember: this is the horror genre; be sensitive to the nuances that you’d associate with the visuals of the field.  As with other submissions, please include the Submission Agreement with your samples.

On a technical level, we want electronic submissions to correspond to the following parameters:
We prefer that colored pages be submitted in either JPEG or TIFF formats.
Your files should be CMYK, between 72dpi and 300dpi.

Letterers

Demonstrate your range across six pages of sequential art.  We want to see what you can do with captions, effects, dialogue balloons, and text.  Remember: while the horror genre is home to many screams and shouted exchanges, we’ve also got the meaty thunks of cleavers, the furtive whispering of teens hiding from rampaging psychos, and the drips and sighs of subterranean fearscapes.

On a technical level, we want electronic submissions to correspond to the following parameters:
We prefer that pages be submitted in either JPEG or TIFF formats.  For letters, it’s actually better for us to see the work samples on grayscale or black and white pages.

The Submission Agreement

Please download and complete the agreement.  We will accept it electronically with a full electronic submission, or printed with printed, by-mail submissions.  Find the downloadable form here.

Submissions at Conventions

Fangoria Graphix will accept submissions at conventions.  We will have copies of the Submission Agreement at the booth for you to sign, but we will also appreciate it if you have the foresight to bring a completed copy with your packet.  If you wish for one of our people to conduct a portfolio review, we will be as accommodating as possible as our schedules allow.  We will occasionally schedule review times for this purpose.

Remember: it is much easier for us to review the work of an artist than a writer in the convention environment.  That does not mean that we won’t accept writing submissions at a show; we will.  Just bear in mind that it’s easier for us to look at an artist’s portfolio at the booth than to read and absorb the writing.  If you make a writing submission at a convention, we will attempt respond to you in a timely manner after the show.

Big Tip:  You should treat any face-time that you get at a convention as a potential job interview.  Professional attitude on your part earns you greater respect on our part.  Show us your work in simple, direct terms, and we’ll give your talent an even chance.

Thank you all for your time.  Now let’s see what you can do.
