The Free Speech Terrorists

04 June 2009 | By Casey Cooper Johnson

Casey Cooper Johnson For a good part of my lifetime, the most menacing term I have come to fear is neither fascism nor global warming. No, more than Hitlers or melting glaciers, I fear terrorists.

Group Storms Greek-Macedonian Dictionary Promotion

Skopje | 03 June 2009 |

Athens
Athens
A group of some 20 people, some of them reportedly wearing masks, stormed a press conference late on Tuesday in Athens during which the Rainbow party of Macedonians in Greece was promoting a new Greek-Macedonian dictionary, according to local media reports.

Local Kanal 5 TV aired footage of the incident presumably shot by the organizers of the event showing men wearing black T-shirts, reportedly with signs of the Greek ultra nationalist organization Golden Dawn, storming the International Press Center in Athens where the conference took place.

They group began destroying the promo material and damaging some of the cameras, verbally attacking the promoters and guests, including renowned US Slavist and linguist Victor Friedman, Kanal 5 said. The group fled the conference after hearing that police were on their way, and the conference resumed without further incident.

So far there have been no reported official reactions from either Greece or Macedonia.

Rainbow leader Pavle Vaskopoulos told Kanal 5 that the incident was a sign that "the Greek authorities are beginning to fear Macedonian activism in Greece". He sees this only as a warning sign against their recent activities.

Although registered by the state as a political party, Rainbow is not officially listed as a party of the Macedonian minority in Greece, as Athens insists that a Macedonian minority does not exist, referring to all Macedonians as "Greek Macedonians".

The two countries are engulfed in a long-standing row over the use of Macedonia’s formal name. Relations soured severely last year after Athens blocked Skopje’s NATO accession because of the row, insisting that because the northern Greek province is named "Macedonia," Skopje's insistence on using the same name implies territorial claims towards Greece.

The Greek nationalist movements strongly oppose the release of this 15,000-word dictionary prepared by Vasko Karadza, arguing that the Macedonian language does not exist. The Greek state refers to Macedonian as a "Slavic idiom". On the other hand, promoters say that the dictionary is a testimony to the existence of the Macedonians and their language.

Golden Dawn was recently registered as a political party and reportedly has close ties with the parliamentary nationalist party LAOS, led by Georgios Karatzaferis.

Last night's incident comes five days before the European Parliament elections in Greece slated for June 7.

THE INTERNATIONAL LEGAL FRAMEWORK DOES NOT ALLOW FOR A "NATIONAL MACEDONIAN" MINORITY IN GREECE.

GREEK CITIZENS THOUGH ARE FREE TO PROMOTE THEIR EDUCATIONAL, LINGUISTIC, CULTURAL, ETC "MAKEDONTSI" RIGHTS.

"MAKEDONTSI" NOT MACEDONIAN MINORITY RIGHTS AS MACEDONIANS ARE ONLY GREEK CITIZENS WHO USE ONLY THE GREEK LANGUAGE.

Why did they invite Prof. Stephen G. Miller, too, he lives nearby?

Btw, where are the "signs" of the "Golden Dawn"...

Nice lil' provocation by the 700+ Rainbow Coalition in Greece, pay 2 thugs, act cool, and then air it on FYROM TV... wow, really marshaling the troops, huh?

Good on you patriots, justify the actions of these neo-Nazi scum bags. This action was coordinated with the Greek government as they are afraid of the truth about Macedonians emerging.

The police outside who were supposedly providing "security" conveniently withdrew when the fascists entered.

Greece has broken all international and European human rights instruments in not recognising the Macedonian minority in the country, but it will be forced to do so.

The fascist attack on the promotion of the dictionary is just an outgrowth of the official Greek policy of denial of the Macedonian and other large minorities (Turks, Pomaks Albanians, and Vlahs). Official denial gives oxygen to fascist groups like this.

"Athens insists that a Macedonian minority does not exist, referring to all Macedonians as "Greek Macedonians""

Another lie.

Nodody ever refers to Macedonians as "Greek MAcedonians" in Greece, just like nobody in Italy refers to "italian sicilians' or in the UK to 'british Scots'. So of course, Macedonian refers to the more numerous, real Macedonians in Greece as opposed to the mosty Bulgarian macedonian-wannabes of Fyrom

Thuggery is becoming a permanent feature of Greek public life and is by no means restricted to extreme right wing groups.Recently university meetings have been broken up by self styled "anarchists" and academics have been beaten up by the same groups for simply expressing views which those groups did not agree with.As for the police they are under explicit orders not to interfere and let the citizens fend for themselves.

In that sense the interruption of the Rainbow party event was a pretty lame affair compared with what has taken place in other events.

I never seen anyone so calm, when supposedly attacked. They didn't even get off their seats, a usual human reaction, when one feels threatened. One of them even takes a picture, with no reaction from the "attackers" ? Seems like a big scam to me. These skopjinas can't stage anything right, this is as laughable as the macedonia soldier costumes they made a few months ago.

Thursday, June 4, 2009
This is not the first time nor the last. In fact this was a relatively tame situation compared to previous events in history of Greece attacking Macedonians. Its like Germany allow over again on a small scale. Black shirts attack and the great majority of greeks stay silent. In a European country such as greece there should be at least some ethnic greeks that stand up for the non-greek minority. Alas in greece that is not the case. Not sure what the greeks are afraid of in this case. Up there were greek citizens of Macedonian descent showing greek flags trying to express their identity. What century are we in again?

Thursday, June 4, 2009
Both sides are showing chauvenism. Greeks, because they are striving to appropriate something that was never Greek nor will be. Ancient Macedonians were Macedonians, and not Greeks. And today's Fyromians, majority of which speaks Bulgarian dialect tries to unrighteously embezzle the Macedonian identity. Come on guys, stop! But I know neither Greeks or Fyromians will stop, until they hit an abyss.

Next time, Mr. FYROM, try to either promote Albanian-Greek OR Bulgarian-Greek dictionaries. There is no such of what you refer.

Rainbow Party: 0.098% of country population vote count. Over half of the these votes are from the rest of Greece, less than half are from Macedonia.

Golden Dawn: The preservation of Greece

Rainbow Party: The annihilation of Greece

Simple minds for simple minds that by no means reflect the greater population of neither Greeks nor Slav-Macedonians.

By the way, can anybody make out what is on the projection screen something about Greece 1916. And if so, what does a historical phase have to do with the promotion of a dictionary.

Dear friends from Skopje, You miss the point
Friday, June 5, 2009
It should be very obvious that the greek responses in the forums are questioning whether this was real or a set-up. Nevermind that a dictionary from the greek language to bulgarian or vice versa portrayed as 'greek-macedonian' is INSULTING to the vast majority of real macedonian who do not speak this language. Defending the right to anyone's opinion is very different to defending the right to INSULT. Which is another reason why we need to find a name to communicate. If you want to refer to Rainbow's language, call it 'rainbow language', call it 'bulgarian', call it 'skopjan', 'fyromian', 'slav-macedonian' or whatever. Just don't call it macedonian because this is the greek idiom spoken in real macedonia.

What do they reply to any real macedonian saying "how can you present this bulgarian language as mine? It is not my language. How dare you disrespect my identity and my language"

As for Pirro, you are daydreaming. Ancient macedonia was nothing but greek(ask the jews what they celebrate on Channukah), as was byzantine macedonia and todays macedonia except for a tiny part. .

I just see Greeks, most propably Macedonians, feel angry for a seminar organized for them, in their name, from Vardarskans, without the consensus of Macedonians.

Thats it. ID theft is a crime and some Macedonians went there to declare it.

Funny how "undemocratic and fascist" Greece is portrayed in this. So why don't we go in promoting the Miladinov' brothers original "Bulgarian Folk Songs" in its true form in Skopje and see what happens? Or what about Livius and Pausanias ancient works about the original Makedonians? How about a full edition of the actual Demosthenes's orations and beliefs?

Most probably they won't even take a permission to be published in FYROM, and we are not talking about promoting them in public...

Greek intolerance
Friday, June 5, 2009
That so many Greeks on this forum are not troubled by what those fascist thugs did, or even better, that they in the same breath renounce fascism and blame the Rainbow Party for bringing the thuggery upon itself (by launching a Greek-Macedonian dictionary!) reveals how far to the right mainstream Greek society sits, and the extent to which a culture of tolerance is lacking in the country. The fact that Greek media chose to boycott the event also bears testament to this. One would think that the launch of a Greek-Macedonian dictionary would seem like a highly newsworthy event, given the current name dispute with the Republic of Macedonia and the ongoing issues surrounding the ethnic Macedonian minority. I just couldn't imagine an event of this kind being received in the same way in any other EU member state. In a tolerant society, opponents listen to each other and respect each other’s viewpoints even when they don’t agree on all matters. Are there no Greeks out there willing to champion tolerance?
