Week Ahead: Novak Djukic Verdict Due

05 June 2009  A verdict in the case of Novak Djukic, who is charged before the War Crimes Chamber of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina with crimes committed in Tuzla, is due to be pronounced, while two status conferences at two new trials are due to take place next week.

The War Crimes Chamber of the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina is due to pronounce a verdict in the case of Novak Djukic, former Commander of the Ozren Tactical Group, on June 12. Djukic is charged with having ordered the shelling of Tuzla on May 25, 1995, when 71 people were killed and more than one hundred were wounded. 

On Thursday, June 11 pre-trial status conferences are due to take place in the case of Faruk Prcic, a former member of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who is charged with crimes committed in Tuzla, and Stojan Perkovic, a former member of the Republika Srpska Army, VRS, who is charged with crimes committed in Rogatica. Prcic pleaded not guilty on March 12 and Perkovic did the same on May 21, 2009.

On June 8 a plea hearing is due to take place in the case of Ljubo Tomic and Krsto Josic. The Court confirmed the indictment against them on April 23. They are charged with war crimes against civilians committed in Zvornik.

Two days later a plea hearing is due to take place in the case of Safet Bukvic, a former member of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who is charged with crimes against civilians committed in Celebici village, in Konjic Municipality.

On Tuesday, June 9 the State Prosecution is due to present its closing arguments at the trial of Momir Savic, who is charged with crimes committed in Visegrad. Three days later, in addition to the Prosecution, seven attorneys representing the injured parties are due to present their closing arguments at the trial of Milorad Trbic, who is charged with genocide committed in Srebrenica.

Ante Kovac, former Commander of the Military Police Squad with the Vitez Brigade of the Croatian Defence Council, HVO, who is charged with crimes committed in Vitez, is due to testify in his own defence on June 11. The trial will continue the following day.

The trial of Ratko Bundalo, Nedjo Zeljaja and Djordjislav Aakraba for crimes committed in Kalinovik is due to continue on June 11. The first Defence witnesses at the trial of Radomir Vukovic and Zoran Tomic, former policemen who are charged with genocide committed in Srebrenica, are due to testify on June 12.

A year and a half after the State Prosecution appealed the first-instance verdict against Momcilo Mandic, the Appellate Chamber is due to hold its first session on Wednesday, June 10. The former Minister of Justice of the Serbian Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina will appear at this session. In July 2007 a first-instance verdict was pronounced, acquitting Mandic of responsibility for the setting up and functioning of the penal and correctional facilities in the Sarajevo and Foca regions.

On Monday, June 8 and Tuesday, June 9 the trial is due to continue in the case of Damir Ivankovic, Zoran Babic, Gordan Djuric, Milorad Radakovic, Milorad Skrbic, Ljubisa Cetic, Dusan Jankovic and Zeljko Stojnic, former policemen from Prijedor, who are charged with shooting about 200 civilians at Koricanske stijene.

The Defence of Predrag Bastah and Goran Viskovic, who are charged with crimes committed in Vlasenica in the course of 1992, is due to continue presenting evidence on June 8 and 11.

On Monday, June 8 and Wednesday, June 10 new Prosecution witnesses are due to appear at the trial of Vinko Kondic, Marko Adamovic and Bosko Lukic, who are charged with crimes committed in Kljuc in the course of 1991 and 1992.

On June 9 and 10 the trial is due to continue in the case of Gojko Klickovic, Mladen Drljaca and Jovan Ostojic, who are charged with crimes committed in Bosanska Krupa.

The Prosecution is due to continue presenting material evidence at the trial of Nisvet Gasal, Musajb Kukavica, Enes Handzic and Senad Dautovic on June 10. The four men are charged with crimes committed against Bosnian Croats from Bugojno.

On Wednesday, June 10 and Thursday, June 11 the trials are due to continue in the case of Radoje Lalovic and Soniboj Skiljevic, who are charged with crimes committed in the Kula Penal and Correctional Facility, and Momir Pelemis and Slavko Peric, charged with genocide against Srebrenica residents in July 1995.

Three new witnesses for Suljo Karajic's Defence are due to appear at the trial on June 11. Karajic is charged with crimes against civilians and prisoners of war committed in the Bihac region. One day later the trial is due to continue in the case of Rade Veselinovic, who is charged with crimes committed in Hadzici.
