Croatia: Judiciary Most Corrupt, Media Least

Zagreb | 05 June 2009 |

The 2009 Global Corruption Barometer, a public opinion survey conducted by Transparency International in 69 countries, shows that Croatians find their country's judiciary to be the most-corrupt institution and the media the least corrupt, the Croatian Times reports.

The 1,000 Croats surveyed by the barometer gave the Croatian judiciary a score of 4.4 and politicians a score of 4.1 on a scale of 1 (the best) to 5 (the worst).

State services and the private sector follow, rated at 4.2, with representative bodies and political parties at 4.1.

Around 71 per cent of those polled said the government had failed to put a stop to corruption. Research showed that 4 per cent of citizens offered bribes - the lowest percentage among countries in the region, but twice as much as in the EU.

Transparency International uses a Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) annually to measure public perception of corruption among public officials and politicians. It uses this data to then prepare its Global Corruption Report.
