The Free Speech Terrorists

04 June 2009 | By Casey Cooper Johnson

Casey Cooper Johnson For a good part of my lifetime, the most menacing term I have come to fear is neither fascism nor global warming. No, more than Hitlers or melting glaciers, I fear terrorists.

Croatia: The Adriatic Coast’s New Ibiza

| 03 June 2009 |

The Croatia of the Tito era has become a thing of the past and, despite the state’s policy of not privatising the infrastructure of many Yugoslav-era seaside resorts, nightlife that can compete with anything on Ibiza is starting to blossom on the hundreds of islands and along the remarkable Adriatic coast.

Old favourites like Opatija and Dubrovnik have retained their charm but are now joined by newer hotspots, created for a five-star tourism experience, led by the islands of Hvar and Brac. Designer hotels, spa centres, renovated medieval stone houses built during the Venetian Republic, combined with the clear blue waters of the Adriatic, add to Croatia’s image as a top destination.

A little to the north, Sibenik has been turning for some years into a cult destination for those who like to go wild in the nightclubs, and popular DJs are transforming the evenings in most of the larger resorts along the coast, into endless parties.

And this is definitely the year to dip your toes into this part of the Adriatic. The world economic crisis means that fewer travellers have booked and there are some great last minute deals out there waiting to be snapped up.

Also, the scouts are out and about from western Europe’s biggest tour operators and if they have their way, the next few years will see an influx of package tourists, and this special coastline could go the way of many of the resorts on the Costa Del Sol.

For the committed clubber, the region offers an unparalled combination of exclusive clubs, great hotels and modest prices.

Four of our most favourite, most hedonistic nightlife destinations are:

Aurora, Sibenik:
The largest club along the coast holds up to 2,000. This season’s grand opening will take place on June 26th with Tony Cetinski, followed by DJ Sharam on June 27th.

Hacienda, Sibenik:

With its impressive parties, this club also attracts a cool crowd of the region’s elite. The DJs are world-class, and the commercial house music keeps the crowd happy until the early hours.

The Garden, Zadar:

This British-owned club has spread into the interior of the Venetian fortress walls, has four separate stages and is without doubt the venue to be seen in this summer. The venue opens at the end of Maty and the Garden Festival between July 3rd and 12th, features Dinner At The Thompsons, Eddy meets Yannah, Faze Action, Henrik Schwarz, Hot 8 Brass Band, Jose James and dozens of DJ sets by Adam Regan, Ali Tillet, Bobby Beige, Brothers’, Dave Jarvis and many others.

Carpe Diem, Hvar:
This club in Hvar port is one of the most luxurious venues on Croatia’s coast. The Carpe Diem Bar opened its summer season on May 1st, and the Carpe Diem Beach will be opening party is on May 30th.
