  • WinXP Doesn't Give Me A Standby Option

OK... So I have a really old computer: a Dell Precision 410 with 512MB and 2 Pentium-3 Processors built in. It's more of a office computer than anything. Lately, I have been wanting to be able to standby the computer... so that the computer could save electricity while I eat downstairs for about 10 minutes. However, I don't get a standby option when I press Turn Off Computer. Instead of a Standby Option, below the yellow box reads Hibernate. Even if I press the shift key, the yellow box is still

  • System Crashes When CD/DVD Player Opens - A Puzzler

This just started happening - when i've ripped or burned a CD, the CD player drawer slides open and right then i get a Memory Dump BSOD. Doesn't matter if i'm using Windows Media Player or Roxio Easy Media Creator as the ripping/burning program. I'm not entirely computer illiterate (though i feel a little like it now ! ), i actually built this thing, but i have no idea what's going on here. It's an ATAPI Lightscribe CD/DVD drive, I am running XP Pro SP3 - i've had SP3 for a while now, and this is

  • Re: Multicore CPUs - Windows Home Server & Virtual Office PC Machines

Would like thoughts and input: I just built a machine with Intel's Q35 chipset (I/O Controller ICH9) and have started my storage with adding 2x Seagate 500G drives with 32Mb cache. This will be my media storage/streamer and backup server for the entire house network (5 family PCs and a possible future media center). However, if I also want to have a office pc to run MS Office, including Outlook (no comments please ;-), and surf the Internet on this same box (I don't need to restart this machine very

  • Strange Vista, XP Windows update, zonealarm connect problem

I've been having a strange Vista (and XP) connect Prob on several boxes and a laptop involving a Windows Update and ZoneAlarm. This same thing has happened on 3 pc's and a laptop in two different locations. Like most people, to busy using the pc instead of configuring, windows update pretty much runs auto and you just install 'em when you have time for the slowdown in performance. So... I couldn't tell ya which update it was and also it's on two different OS's. Anyway.... After the update no connect

  • Permission denied to shared printers

I have a Windows Home Server sharing a printer to our network which has a desktop and laptop with Vista Business SP1 and another desktop with XP SP3 Media Center 2002. The server automatically shared the printer when I attached it and the two Vista machines have been able to print without a problem. My issue is whenever the XP machine is restarted (or logs off in any way), its access permissions to the printer on the server are denied. I have to either remove and then reconnect to the printer on

  • USB Mass Storage Device

I have an ACOM DATA 60GB External USB/Firewire hard drive connected to my Toshiba Laptop. It has been working with no issues for years, all of sudden I am now unable to view my drive at all and when I look in Device Manager, I have a "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" error. Any one that point me in the right direction on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Re: Should I upgrade to Vista?

I just removed Vista from a laptop this afternoon, simply because the owner wanted the machine to run faster and with more stability and it had done so with XP. Now, that's not to say that I would never put Vista on any laptop. In fact, I just ordered a Lenovo X61t with Vista, because I like the improved inking capabilities that Vista has for Tablet PC's. However, I did order the machine with 4 GB of memory. In your case, I'd recommend sticking with XP.

  • Upgrading PC Parts (To format or not to format?)

Am about to upgrade my PC. I just got Raidmax 630w Modular PSU, and an employee bundle which included Intel Q6700. I'm about to buy the Abit IX38 QuadGT, but I am wondering if I need to reformat my HDD when I do this (as well as back up info on another HDD and DVDRW). What do you guys suggest that has went through a similar plan?
