CAMRA Spring Collection

Spring is in the air and it is well reflected in this new collection of excellent real ales in a bottle.

With the lighter evenings, longer days and brighter weather (hopefully!) upon us, our attention switches away from the warming, darker beers of winter and towards the crisper, lighter flavours of a range of pale beers from all around the UK.

To open up, we have a full-flavoured organic beer produced by Ridgeway Brewing. Alongside this is an authentic Bavarian-style wheat beer from the acclaimed Meantime Brewing, packaged in a bigger bottle than normal especially for CAMRA Beer Club members.

For a taste of the coast, there's a beer called Liberation from Suthwyk Ales made from barley grown on the hills around Portsmouth harbour. It's a beer that celebrates one of the nation's most remarkable military successes, D-Day. Then, from fields of barley in Hampshire, we move over to gardens of hops in Kent, to find out how New Zealand-born brewer Tonie Prins adds a New World twist to his Hopdaemon ales. Finally, just in case the weather fails to be quite as clement as we all hope, there's a beer to bring a little glow back to your cheeks in the form of O8, Otley Brewery's award-winning barley wine from South Wales.

This is a package of beers that not only showcases the best of British farming and brewing expertise, but also adds an intriguing international accent along the way.

Why is CAMRA doing this?

Despite CAMRA's best efforts, it is often difficult for people to buy a good range of bottle-conditioned products at the supermarket or their local off-licence. CAMRA has selected excellent examples of these in a mixed case that can be delivered to their door with little fuss.

The beer cases come complete with tasting notes written by our guest beer experts along with interesting anecdotes which may feature information about the brewery, how the beer was brewed and other fascinating unknown facts!

The CAMRA Beer Club will make available a good quality, wide range of real ale in a bottle in an educational and informative way. We hope to increase the Beer Club Members' knowledge about beer.

Doesn't CAMRA support cask ale and pubs?

A lot of people may be thinking that this will drive business away from pubs and will further encourage people to drink at home.

The simple answer is CAMRA would always prefer that people enjoy a cask ale at the pub. However we also accept there any many occasions when people do drink at home. In these instances we would prefer that people drink real ale in a bottle rather than canned beer products.

CAMRA's policy is also to promote real ale in a bottle (British bottle-conditioned products). We believe that this it is the next best thing to cask ale that you enjoy at the pub. The club aims to make available beers that might have not previously or easily been available to CAMRA Beer Club members in bottle form.

By increasing people's knowledge, and by widening their awareness of different beer styles we hope that they may also have the confidence to try different styles of cask ales at the pub.

Is the CAMRA Beer Club only available to CAMRA Members?

People who are not members of CAMRA can also join the beer club - however CAMRA members get a £5 discount so we would encourage them to join up!

A single membership of the Campaign for Real Ale costs just £20* a year - which means you can enjoy your Beer Club membership at the lower rate at no extra cost along with a whole host of other benefits associated with CAMRA membership. For further details visit www.camra.org.uk/joinus

*Concessionary rates are also available.

How are the beers selected?

Many of the beers selected are previous CAMRA award-winners or champion beers.

Each case is hand-picked by a panel of experts from both CAMRA and the Beer Club of Britain. We ensure beers are of the highest quality, by having brewing experts on hand to advise.

Every beer is selected for its consistency, quality and diversity. In future cases there will be opportunities for Beer Club members to make their own personal recommendations to the Club.

Why do some of your cases feature foreign beers?

Again, a lot of people may be thinking is odd as CAMRA is there to support British Beer and British breweries, but CAMRA does in fact support foreign beers that are authentically brewed. Our research would indicate that there is strong interest amongst our members in this type of product - which is why we have included these beers.

What is the Beer Club of Britain's Involvement?

CAMRA and the Beer Club of Britain have worked together to create the CAMRA Beer Club.

CAMRA hopes that by using an organisation with experience in home delivery of beer we will give a good level of customer service to our Beer Club Members, supported by CAMRA‘s knowledge of beer and our membership, to design and select each unique case of beer. We are working together to ensure a quality product for our members.

CAMRA Beer Club cases are just that - handpicked by CAMRA for our members. Beer Club of Britain cases will not replicate CAMRA Beer Club selections.
