Max Michaels gets GROTESQUE w/Exclusive Pics!

GrotesqueCoverMax Michaels is indeed a busy man.  In-between promoting Movement Frequencies, his own label of dark Industrial and Gothic Rock acts, DJ-ing for local clubs, and promoting his own magazine of dark rock news dubbed MOVEMENT, he’s working hard to create horrifically phantasmagorical images to titillate and inspire.

Recently, Max has placed his creations into a new book of photography entitled GROTESQUE - a concept release that also includes a musical score for each individual photo, as artfully and lovingly created by Grim Faeries versus Asp Beat Battalion. The project has quietly been winning fans, including filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman (SAW II-IV, REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA), and muscians such as Ogre (Skinny Puppy), Rogue (The Cruxshadows), and Fango favorite Voltaire.

I recently experienced GROTESQUE first-hand, and Michaels has provided some exclusive photos to share with FANGORIA.

Fango Musick Exclusive: Talking with The Last Dance

lastdance1 I recently posted my review of The Last Dance documentary ALMOST BEAUTIFUL (read it here), a lovely work exploring the inside of the Gothic Rock scene from the ground-up with one of the scenes better known recent acts. This week, I caught up with Rick, Jeff, and Peter for a FANGORIA MUSICK exclusive, to get their take on the Goth Scene and to talk a little horror, including their appearance on THE SEARCH FOR THE NEXT ELVIRA.

The Last Dance - ALMOST BEAUTIFUL (DVD Review)

Order the DVDSome time ago, I posted the following review on the now-defunct VF Magazine website. Since it no longer exists, I feel the need to share the joy with the FANGORIA Community.  Much has been said about the success of the Darkwave act The Last Dance, and this is one more piece of beauty I had to add for one of my favorite Goth acts.

Dr. Raven's Blog 03/29/2009

Bloody BlogsI’m taking the time at this point to post a much needed update.  I have to admit, when I applied to write for FANGORIA MUSICK, I never thought that it would take off as quickly as it has already.  So far, I’ve seen what seem to be a hundred posts of fantastic acts, combined with the literary lambasting of some (genuinely awful) soundtracks and some choice opinions shared on long-lasting acts.  This is what music journalism is all about.  Getting the word out about the good, the bad, the seductive, and the ugly.  I cannot tell you how honored I am to work with so many truly talented writers who passionately bring you this “Musick”.

Doctor Raven: GOTH'S UNDEAD.

Now that I’ve gotten a lot of reviews out of the way, now is as good a time as any to get another blog in before launching into the next batch.  I’ve felt the need to pen this for a little while now as I think given the commercial success of acts like The Birthday Massacre, Combichrist, Bella Morte, The Last Dance and The Dreamside and others that it needs to be said.  As a writer and music critic of the Goth and Industrial scene I’m often asked “Didn’t Goth die out?”  “Weren’t you guys just replaced?” “Didn’t your peak pass in the 80’s?”
