Geology

Due to its age, Nuuk area is one of the most interesting geological areas in the world. Some of the oldest rocks that have been found in the Godthaabfiord, date more than 3,8 billion years old.
The small island, Akilia, has recently been made a sanctuary due to its exceptionally rare mineral composition and age.

The oldest traces of life on our planet were recently discovered in the Isua-area, near Nuuk. The findings of tiny carbon-based presumed algea was dated 3,8 billion years old. The lifeforms were found by the Greenlandic geologist Minik Rosing, from The Geological Museum, Denmark.
Greenlandic semi-precious stones to be found in the Nuuk area should be mentioned: Nuummit (one of the oldest stones in the world), Grønlandit and the fine rubies from the settlement Qeqertarsuatsiaat/ Fiskenæsset.
