Nsync sold a lot of records, does that make them a good group…NO. Green Day is the current media darlings because they bash the GOP. The “opera” crap is horrible, sounds so out of place. This is one band i wish would go away.

Jack | 5/11/2009, 7:03 pm EST

That’s why they’re selling more albums and selling more concerts tickets than they ever have in their careers right?

‘Lowest point in their career,’

I think not.

The new album sucks. uninspired political fake opera shit. AI was not good, but this is really the low point of their carreer

Zhen | 5/11/2009, 5:21 pm EST

Anyone aping “selling out” just doesn’t have the intelligence to find a non-cliche way to say “I really didn’t connect with this record and I don’t like things I don’t understand.”

Sure, its not punk, but its punk’s next logical step. Almost every punk career starts out mean and angry, then adds in layers of complexity in the music and lyrics. The Clash, Bad Religion, Rancid, Black Flag, heck even NOFX did the “punk opera” thing before Green Day. Anyone who stayed “hard core” burned out before they could evolve their style.

Punk bands just don’t last in the spotlight unless they adapt. Green Day has adapted pretty well, even if this new album may not be the next coming of the White Album.

Jack | 5/11/2009, 4:44 pm EST

Guys, Green Day sold out in 1994, 15 years ago, get over it.

They aren’t trying to be a “punk” band, they’re making music about how they feel, its how they express themselves. Now if you don’t like it, who’s making you listen to it?

They’ve grown as musicians, get over the sell-out factor. It was ten years ago get your head on from under the ground.

Death of Chaos | 5/11/2009, 3:18 pm EST

They sound way too much like My Chemical Romance with this one, not to say I don’t like MCR, they’re awesome and would like to hear more from them. It just kinda sucks when you hear another band come out with something that sounds way too similar to another artist. Who else thinks they sound sort of too MCR style and not enough Greenday?

Anonymous | 5/11/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Bad cd. That’s all I need to write.

Hey my man Cesar…clever name…talk too much??? more like you don’t want to hear it bro’!!!!

dave | 5/11/2009, 12:11 pm EST

It’s ridiculous to say Billy Joe is one of the best song writers. Absurd. What part of his lyrics are poetic? Such a load of bull. “Know Your Enemy” is such a sad song that rehashes a popular cliche ad-hoc like a scratched CD. These other songs aren’t much better. There is nothing that ‘pushes the envelope’ on this album; there is no inventiveness; there is no poetry. This is a straight up rock record that has all the characteristics of any other Bruce Vig project. Bah humbug on this hype machine.
Give me the Beatles any day.

Cesar... | 5/11/2009, 12:10 pm EST

You talk too much.

Cesar | 5/11/2009, 11:02 am EST

Oh Wow man…This new Green Day album is better than the Who’s “Tommy” and “Quadrophenia” combined!!!! These guys are right up there with The Beatles now!!!!

Yeah, right….not quite!!!!!! Once again the “renowned” Rolling Stone magazine again over-hypes another “guess what”?????…a Bush bashing CD!!!!! This magazine has become a pathetic joke. If Springsteen’s last album was a 5 star affair…I got a whole fresh batch of Kool-Aid for Sheffield, Fricke, Rosen etc. You guys wouldn’t know a star if you were lost in the planetarium!!!!!

And Sti guy…old Barry in the White House stated that his administration wanted a non-partisan sharing of ideas when he became our leader!!! Most of what I see from the left is that they don’t like to be disagreed with, don’t want to hear it, and will always try to “smear” anyone who doesn’t see it their way!!!! So I know you don’t want anyone raining on your Green Day…but get over it…you are not adhering to your leader’s request.

Green Day is mediocre at best…try Mastodon’s “Crack the Skye” or go back and listen to those two Who classics again…your Green Boys don’t measure up!!!

WAIT..you are right…everyone is wise to RS tired old “s_ _ t!!!! And to those who question why we “dissenters” come to this site and “spoil their(Green)day” for them…for myself it is pure amusement. I love to listen to folks with no “real” musical frame of reference babble on!!!!

PS…by the way..also to the individual that is blaming Republican’s for all the problems in the country now…google Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the Democrats ties to them. You will then have a more clear picture of how things got to where they are…and the Dems that helped get us there…including our illustrious Prez!!!!! Be prepared when you come on here….most of you are weak on the facts!!!!!

Eatapeach10 | 5/11/2009, 10:43 am EST

It shows that Green Day has been earning their studio “chops”. The “great ones” always have. The Beatles, the Stones, U2, the Heartbreakers…whoever. All paid their dues by learning what they can and can not do “in the studio”…and it’s now paying off. I appreciate bands that grow within, without sacrificing music style, tastes, or integrity.

Now, I am not a Greed Day “fan”, but I will buy this album when it comes out tomorrow. Good music is worth supporting. Too much is regurgitated these days, with no originality. Say what you will, but from the outside (non-fan) looking in, this is an album worth celebrating!

brandon | 5/11/2009, 2:30 am EST

In continuation of what i stated below….I dont want to compare Green Day to the Beatles but just as the beatles went from pop in the beginning to more of a rock band later in their career, green day did the same thing going from punk band to an inspiring rock band. This shows their maturity as a band and their ability to put out better records every time. I appreciate melody in music and am very happy with this record. I dont need the occasional “fuck you” attitude in every song to make it a true rock album.

brandon | 5/11/2009, 2:22 am EST

can’t wait to play this on my guitar. I dont give a fuck if this is better than American Idiot or not, nothing will be better than that CD. Yeah, they might not have the anger they showed in American Idiot, but that can also be becuase this CD is about change from the Bush era to Obama. So they tone it down a bit and musically explain an amazing story. For all of you who think this CD is shit, listen to it about 5-6 more times before you give your opinion or you might just not be appreciative of the musical aspect behind it. I dont get how people say this is boring and all sound the same, every song has a different tone to it.

Okay, one last thing.
(because it made me laugh)

“If you don’t like it, go watch American Idol and pretend the world is not fucked up!”

I didn’t realise I had to listen to some old wannabe punk bands mediocre music to become aware of the worlds problems, I personally prefer to watch the news, thanks.

anybody who compares Green Day to being even near to the level of The Beatles is a dope smoking, hip hop listening American Idol watching Idiot.

if i didn’t make it clear,

Alright, now I have been a fan since Dookie. After hearing that, I got Nimrod, kerplunk, 39 smooth, insomniac, warning, shenanigans…..ALL OF THEM NOW. Been a true fan for ages.

I agree this new album is definitely different. Its not like OMG this is the BEST or anything(to me), but it still sounds great, they had fun. And blah blah you sellout commentees, it was dookie where they signed w reprise, after lookout records, and some things changed, they’re ability to make good and catchy songs, hasnt.

If youre a real fan, maaaaybe you shouldve grown up a little, you know, WITH THEM.

Anonymous | 5/10/2009, 4:32 pm EST

I wish people will stop comparing some of this to the Beetles, The Beetles were shit. This album is truly amazing. If you don’t like it, go watch American Idol and pretend the world is not fucked up!

I have a question? If everyone that is on this site blogging that Green Day is a bunch of sell outs and that they suck, if your not a fan then why are you wasting your time talking crap about a band that you have no interest in? Are you that pathetic and you really have no life but to sit around and blog abound a band that literally has no musical connection to you? If your not a Green Day fan, then get the fuck off this site. This was designed as a celebration of Green Days new album, and so the fans can discuss what they liked and why they are excited. Not to call the band sell outs, and make illogical responses that are completely retarded and dont make any sense whats so ever. Haters, get a life.

Jocie | 5/10/2009, 1:35 pm EST

i cant wait to buy it! and i cant wait for their concert

Me | 5/10/2009, 1:18 pm EST

I think when they signed with Reprise Records, they sold out and that happened with Dookie in 1994.
And 21st Century Breakdown and American Idiot, well the albums are very good, but the media that they employing (Records) are so… you know… contradictory.

johnycjnr | 5/10/2009, 1:07 pm EST

Big disappointment.I can’t believe how cheesy the album is.Tailor made for your local commercial radio station.Anyway,I look forward to hearing some of these songs on spongebob squarepants’ next season.

Forest | 5/10/2009, 11:45 am EST

Well, after a 11 hour drive across a few states, I listened to 21st Century Breakdown about 5 times. Now, I AM a Green Day fan, and Dookie was the first album I ever purchased, well, had a “big kid” purchase because HarmonyHouse (haha who remembers those!) didn’t sell ParentalAdvisory cd’s to children! I’ve come to the conclusion that the biggest difference between this album and American Idiot is that Green Day isn’t pissed off anymore. During the writing of AI, we all know what certain politician inspired so much turmoil for everyone, and I just don’t feel that anger anymore in 21st, something that I felt authenticated the raw skate-punk style that was so reminiscent of older Green Day albums. Not saying that this album is bad, just different. I do like the new Green Day style, where the songs are meant to be played together, as its very operatic in the sense that AI was. I enjoy this album, but I’m not sure it hits me as hard as AI did. To everyone who is saying Green Day sucks now? Really? Do you still complain about the same things you did when you were 18 and 20? Those guys released Dookie in 1994, and shame on you for thinking that in 15 years they would be writing the same music. You grew up. They grew up. Stop expecting the next Dookie and understand that different things are inspiring them to still write, record and produce music, something that many of my teenage bands have failed to do. Good effort, good album, great band. They stopped writing an album of singles and wrote an album again. Cheers.

tiedewhiteside | 5/10/2009, 11:39 am EST

Billy joe, tre, and mike, this album is brilliant, and its just so refreshing to hear green day again. i cant even describe. and as different as it is to everything else uve everdone, so was american idiot, and this just gets better everytime i listen to it!

Anonymous | 5/10/2009, 3:10 am EST

When the hell did Green Day become the voice of a generation? Dookie is still their one and only complete album. The Offspring have always been better than Green Day but they don’t get the recognition Green Day does because they don’t pander to liberals.

Conrad in Van | 5/10/2009, 2:26 am EST

21-century breakdown does it’s best imitation of a Big Country song. When Green Day covered the “saints are coming” by Big Country founder Stuart Adamson’s first band the Skids with U2, they were on to something.

Most Green Day fans will be too young or dum including Rolling Stone to catch-on to the Big Country/Slids influence.

That is still a punk influence…relax before everyone rip’s their hair-out.

elsaadisam | 5/9/2009, 11:21 pm EST

codered850 | 5/9/2009, 6:23 pm EST

What is wrong with you guys? It’s green day. I highly think this album sounds like Green Day. It may be about different things a little bit of a different style, but it still has that green day punk vibe to it. Just remember its not the 90s!! They probably won’t get away with writing material similar to dookie or insomniac. 21st century breakdown will make a huge success for green day as its a great album and I like it better than american idiot !

brinalynn | 5/9/2009, 6:07 pm EST

I agree with Rolling Stone! This album is very good! It has everything you would want. Musically it is great. It shows how the band has grown. The way they have brought together different sounds from different types of music is fantastic! The songs are filled with emotion. Isn’t that what we want when we listen to music? I think that all the people who are giving negetive comments need to really listen to it again and this time hear it! No, it isn’t the old Green Day. You can’t move forward if you keep doing the same old thing over and over again. This band has moved foreward, and the sound is amazing. Also the songwriting is full of emotion. You can tell that the lyrics are pulled out of the heart and soul. They are only telling people to OPEN THEIR EYES to the things that are happening around them and to get involved. And, to look at ourselves. Are any of us perfect?????? Listen again. This time with an open mind. OH! and Mr. Wait, I didn’t realise that this was a political sight to comment on. But I am surprised that you don’t like Green Day. They are basically saying the same thing that you are. To get up and take resopnsibility! They are just saying it through art, Not hot air!

Jonathan A | 5/9/2009, 5:57 pm EST

21st Century is very good, but not great. They pretty much take a the best parts from all their bit from all their influences ( Beatles, Kinks, Ramones, Cheap Trick and the Who) and then make it into a “concept album”, much like My Chemical Romance did on “The Black Parade”…I still thinks it’s a very solid album, but nothing truly amazing.

State of Grace | 5/9/2009, 5:43 pm EST

Why review an album when you say the band sucks? I’m British and I can tell you that the way Americans seem to celebrate another’s success is sadly lacking in the UK. Green Day did not sell out by selling millions of records, they made a record millions of people could relate to. I’m sorry but Bush did a shit job and American Idiot spoke to a generation. 21st Century Breakdown is sounding fantastic on first listen and it’s great to hear people saying it like they think it is. That’s what Rock and Roll is remember! As for the people slating them for using keyboards…

Anonymous | 5/9/2009, 4:54 pm EST

I consider Foxboro Hot Tubs the new green day cd not this one.

Anonymous | 5/9/2009, 4:53 pm EST

“It’s still one of the best albums ever.”

WOW, are you serious? best albums ever???????? you can’t be older than 12 because if you honestly believe that you are f***ing retarded. This cd absolutely sucks. Green Day has made 1 complete album and the song American Idiot, besides that they stole wonderwall and called it boulevard of broken dreams and decided since they ran out of material they’ll bash republicans. Can’t wait for the hippiefest to be over in a few years.

Sean | 5/9/2009, 4:38 pm EST

I take that back…honestly, they have been maturing from album to album and I’m listening to “Last Night on Earth” which is very Beatlesque and I enjoy it, but for a Green Day fan since Dookie, it’s quite shocking to hear them do material like this. Give it a few more listens…

Sean | 5/9/2009, 4:26 pm EST

Pretty dissapointed…not the Green Day that I expected. Kinda lame.

Anonymous | 5/9/2009, 3:39 pm EST

Looks like the best album of the year is going to be Dave Matthews on June 2nd. 21st Century Breakdown is plain old garbage.

Alice Danielle | 5/9/2009, 3:22 pm EST

So the style’s different. Gasp? It’s still one of the best albums ever. It’s just not the same Green Day we are used to. So get over it and look at the album unbiasedly. I agree completely with everything that StiGuy said. I also cannot find a single bad song on the album. People are criticizing the album saying it sucks and all that… And a few said that don’t like Green Day at all. So why the hell are you saying this album sucks? We probably think the music you listen to sucks. But do we go post negative comments about them? Nope, I don’t at least. And this album will definitely be a big hit for Green Day. I don’t see why it would be bad for them. How many people have already preordered it on iTunes? A lot I believe. Also, Green Day’s lyrics are great. Amazing, actually. And the guitar and drums top all.
I’m already in love with the album and I just finished listening to it. And how the hell will this be Green Day’s downfall? No idea, so whoever it is that said that is stupid. Really stupid.

Fuck Wait | 5/9/2009, 2:45 pm EST

To Wait - alot of the “hippies and deadbeats” along with millions of other people who HAD jobs and paid taxes have recently been laid off due primarily to GOP financial deregulation and policies. Green Day might not be everyone’s cup of tea (no pun intended for the teabaggers…) but at least they are brave enough to write about what they see in America today. Maybe you should WAIT instead for the new fucking Black Eyed Peas album asshole.

johnnyb | 5/9/2009, 2:45 pm EST

awesome record, more experimental though, its not so direct as usual coming from green day, but thats the great thing here

StiGuy | 5/9/2009, 1:44 pm EST

Hey how about this, quit bitching about the politics behind the music. Its the music that should be judged here, not Green Day’s political views. I mean, who really gives a shit about there opinions. Bottom line, this is a solid rock effort and a great album. I couldnt find one bad song on 21st century. Green Day once again proves anti-hollywood and puts cliche music to shame with excellent lyrics, thrashing drums and guitars, and just kick ass music in general. Welcome back Green Day, and I will proudly buy your album next week, FUCK THE HATERS!!! And quit talking about selling out, its ridicilous. If you were offered millions of $$ to “Sell out”, like you douch bags like to call it, dont tell me you wouldn’t accept it. So shut the fuck up.

Anonymous | 5/9/2009, 1:04 pm EST

Green Day sold out to basing their entire careers now on politics. Musicians need to stick to the music, not trying to shove their views down people’s throats. I consider myself to be an independant and cannot stand one side saying they’re right and the other is wrong, because both parties are responsible. ALL politicians are the same and don’t give a crap about anything but their bottomline, both sides are equally corrupt.

With that aside, this album is mediocre. Tracks 2, 3, and 4 are decent, other than that you can change cd’s. Whoever wrote the review that said the b-side Light’s Out is good is right but there’s a reason why they put it as a B-side, because they didn’t have enough good material to include that song on the cd as it doesn’t fit the rest of the cd. Know Your Enemy is Green Day’s weakest lead single from any album they have done so I knew this album was going to be in trouble.

blahblahblah | 5/9/2009, 12:56 pm EST

I think all you sorse-ees out there are just growing impatient waiting for Chineese Democracy II. It’ll come… someday…

wow | 5/9/2009, 12:00 pm EST

wasn’t expecting a sound like this. thumbs up.

Anonymous | 5/9/2009, 11:33 am EST

At first Green Day surprised me with their new sound this album, and it has taken me a little while to get used to. But it’s definitely an amazing album, just different.

You shouldn’t approach this album with American Idiot or Dookie in mind, but approach it unbiasedly. The only song that sounds similar to previous green day is Know Your Enemy and Lights Out (Know Your Enemy b-side, great song btw).

I think it’s pretty impressive when a band can make an album where every single song isn’t a carbon copy of each other but they each have their own flavor, and that’s what they did here.

For whoever says that Green Day sold out with American Idiot, you are idiots. American Idiot and 21st Century are the opposite of selling-out for they are different directions the band has taken in its sound, making a departure for what has been successful previously for them. American Idiot just happened to be incredibly popular, you can’t blame the band for that. We’ll see how 21st Century Breakdown does. Nothing screams hit single to me on the album besides Know Your Enemy, but this album has no holes.

Fifs | 5/9/2009, 10:30 am EST

I love the people who say Green Day sold out with American Idiot. NO! They sold out when they made Dookie, their MAJOR LABEL debut. People need to figure out the difference between being insanely successful and selling out.

This is a good album and a success. I hope they get the punk back with the next one. This one is really good though.Just not good for the reasons I like green day.

xgamerx | 5/9/2009, 9:10 am EST

This is probably Green Day’s worst effort yet.

The song’s aren’t bad, but you can tell they’re uninspired, unoriginal, and none are better than mediocre.

A major disappointment.

HBK | 5/9/2009, 8:33 am EST

Punk bands like Green Day are a disgrace to Rock & Roll…punk rock, heavy metal and death metal don’t deserve to be labeled as music…just insolent noise…oh yeah and this album sucks

Matt | 5/8/2009, 9:01 pm EST

Wait is so misinformed it’s ridiculous. The right wing extremist GOP is done indeed. Great album, BTW!

ughh….that was horrible.

This album is horrible. Green Day got lucky with American Idiot, if it wasn’t for that one song this band would be dead. This album is basically Warning II, they have completely sold out.

“Another +4 star review for a band that bashes America?? It’s gotta be Rolling Stone! Way to go, hacks!”

Yeah, because songs like I’m So Bored With The USA should be unloved by everyone!

Keep “spreading the wealth around” and you hippies won’t be around for too much longer. Just Wait until 2010. You guys might have dragged other hippies and minorities off the couch to vote in 2008 but the tide will turn next year. Get a job and take some responsibility for yourself

I have heard enough of the album to judge. Fading GOP? HAHA. Just wait until 2010. You hippies might have dragged all the other hippes and deadbeats off the couch to vote in 2008, but just wait until the midterm elections. All of us people who have jobs and pay taxes to support said hippes and deadbeats will not sit on the sideline again. Just Wait…

@Wait: They don’t bash America, they bashed Bush (I don’t blame ‘em)…listen to the album before you judge them.

Slooter | 5/8/2009, 5:50 pm EST

They do not bash America, they just bash the fading GOP. I think they should stop, because there are only a few dozen Republicans left in the country.

All of this from a band who gained notoriety 15 years ago for a song about masturbation. Gotta love it.
