The ART OF HORROR: Lydia Burris

Dave PortraitToday we feature a young artist named Lydia Burris, whose marvelously macabre drawings, paintings and sculptures truly seem to be born of the soul. Working in a myriad of medias, her work evokes a sinister sense of wonder, and shows that even in the art of horror true beauty can always be found.

Lydia has always had a deep interest in the dark and unusual and for this she blames her mother, who raised her on horror films. She studied traditional fine art at Indiana University and in '05 received her Masters of Fine Art from the Norwich School of Art and Design in England.

Using whatever media is within reaching distance (paint, pencils, sandpaper, spit, ink, wood, demons, bristol paper), Lydia is inspired by fantasy and horror media, dreams, and obsession. In her art, she tries to combine abstract chaos with illusionistic beauty. She's heavily influenced by Clive Barker, Hieronymous Bosch, Gustav Moreau, 19th century Symbolist painters, and vampires, and is probably one of the most colorful dark artists you will come across in the genre.
