t wasn’t too long ago people were whispering that Nintendo’s mind-blowing success may be starting to wind down. Well, prepare to have your mind blown again—Nintendo reported its year end fiscal results today and they ain’t exactly shabby. This year alone, Nintendo achieved 1.83 trillion
yen worth of sales, and had operating profits north of 555 billion yen. That’s a lot of yen. In fact, that’s so much yen that when we tried to convert those figures using an online currency converter, we broke the Internets! (OK, not really. The first figure is about $18.5 billion, and the latter is around $5.6 billion. Impressive, whichever way you look at it.)
This success comes to Nintendo thanks to the fact that they sold nearly 26 million Wii systems this past year, and more than 31 million DS systems. In total, that’s more than 50 million Wii consoles and over 100 million DS handhelds sold to date. Games have been selling well for Nintendo, too: this year saw another 197 million DS games and 204 million Wii games snatched from the shelves.
These sales figures lead to the icing on Nintendo’s press release cake (which is by the way, the most disappointing cake ever): sales for the company are up 9.9%, and operating profit is up 14 percent. We guess these days it’s good to be living in the Mushroom Kingdom.
