Beyonce “Today” Hoaxer Says He Was Trying To Make A Point

How did a 26-year-old computer art student from Connecticut temporarily tarnish Beyoncé’s good name? Actually, it was quite easy. All it took was a little pitch-correction software and a plug from Howard Stern for Matthew Zeghibe’s YouTube creation to cause considerable consternation for the pop diva yesterday, as a viral video of Beyoncé seemingly singing nightmarishy off-key made its way around the Net. Zeghibe’s clip — which claimed to be the real soundboard recording of “If I Were a Boy” from a November 2008 Today show appearance — was somehow discovered by Stern’s staff, and the shock jock played it on his Sirius Satellite Radio program Tuesday.

“I don’t even listen to Howard Stern,” admits Zeghibe, a “secret fan of Beyoncé” who studied at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. “I was just trying to make a point. I wanted to show people how easy it is to manipulate someone’s voice. If I can do it with a clip I pulled off of TV, imagine what they are doing on records and during live performances. The entire industry has been so manipulated, because there’s such an emphasis on perfection, so when something like this happens, it causes such a stir.”

Zeghibe says he made the video in January, and posted it on his YouTube channel mostly just for his friends’ amusement. He had nothing against B, it was just that the clip was so crisp and the audio so clear, “I knew I could do what I wanted to do and get away with it.” Before Tuesday, a mere 25,000 people have viewed the clip. By the time it was removed from YouTube the next day, Zeghibe says it had registered over 100,000 views.

“I knew something had to have happened to make it jump so fast,” he recalls. “It’s wild how much the story’s been twisted. It’s just always been fun for me to manipulate artists, and make it sound crazy. It was just for a good laugh. It was a goof, just for fun. I do a lot of parodies on my YouTube channel, and it just so happens this one got a little out of hand.”

While Zeghibe says he hasn’t heard from Beyoncé’s camp about the video, he was certainly surprised by the reaction the video received from the singer and her father. Beyoncé told MTV News that the timing of the video was perfect, “because I’ll be on the Today show tomorrow singing ‘Halo,’ [and] tonight, you can watch me sing live on David Letterman! It’s perfect promotion, whoever came up with that idea.” (Beyoncé did indeed perform “Halo” on Letterman last night.)

Her father, Mathew Knowles, was less appreciative. “At 12 years into her career, the last thing someone should be questioning is her vocal ability,” Knowles said in a statement. “That would be like questioning if Kobe Bryant could shoot a jump shot. The vocals were obviously altered.”

“I’m happy I could stir up the mixing pot for her,” says Zeghibe, adding that he’s also given the same treatment in the past to Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears before admitting he feels no need to apologize for the hoax. “I was just what I’ve learned in school, and it’s fun I could fool so many people and get away with it. A lot of people had a lot of laughs because of it, so why should I apologize? If you can’t poke fun at yourself, I don’t know what kind of person you are.”

Really, I have watched old videos of Beyonce when she was young singing live and her voice was great. I feel sorry for the Rock bands fans. Many of them can only scream and the loud live musical instruments hide how they truly sound. I do not consider anyone that yells or screams over loud musical instruments, a true vocalist. Believe me if Beyonce sounded that horrible on the show others who worked there would have leaked and probably discussed it. That is why on TV shows many no talented singers, like (Ashlee Simpson) sing to a recording. Do you guys remember all the excuses? Beyonce did not make one excuse because that was not her actual voice. Beyonce would have to be a fool to sound that bad and really try to sing live. Please people use common sense. I thought the video was very funny. I knew that was not Beyonce’s actual tones.

i bet that beyonce’s crew is paying this guy to say he altered the sound with that program.

shes a joke. just a black chic with a big ass and a voice.

Beyonce did it! | 4/27/2009, 3:41 pm EST

So let me get this, a viral video of Beyoncé seemingly singing nightmarishy off-key appears, then in less then 24 hrs. the creator of the video come out as a hoax, all this happen 2 days before the premiere of Beyonce new film.

The movie debuted in #1.

I think the hoax is on us.

gemini | 4/27/2009, 1:56 pm EST

Who gives a fuck ! She probably set this whole thing up amyway. She is very talented, beautiul and very smart!! With a new movie out she got all the attention on her and her new release. Hey people its business and she is a shark in a gold fish tank.. Good for her she deserves it

m.e | 4/27/2009, 10:39 am EST

someone get this loser a job. way tooooo much free time on his hands.

Jesus2 | 4/27/2009, 9:09 am EST

This is actually very simple to do with karaoke software to extract the voice and altering the tones with the picth correction software MELODYNE

It’s impossible for a trained singer to sing like B did in the video.

pinky | 4/27/2009, 8:31 am EST

Beyonce is one of the few TALENTED, REAL music artists. I love her music cos it’s real and original. you have to give it to her, you may not like her but you must admit she got real talent for music, and she works very hard as well.

Greg | 4/26/2009, 11:44 pm EST

The bitch is massively overrated.

ianto | 4/26/2009, 9:58 pm EST

This guy is basically a meatspace griefer. Not interested in the legalities or the potential for emotional upset. He lacks the maturity to realise that doing something “for a laugh” is a pretty poor reason for causing harm to someone’s career.

I do think that there will be a backlash against over-perfected, over-altered musical performance, as there has been against plastic surgery in the film industry.

Quibbon | 4/26/2009, 9:35 pm EST

lalalala | 4/26/2009, 8:32 am EST

I find it unfair for him to do that, I mean come on Beyonce can sing I have been to some of her concert and she is quite good. If he wanted to make a point he should have attacked Britney Spears, Chris Martin from Coldplay who can’t hold a key and needs to scream to get the audience screaming for more. He should stay away from artist like Duffy,Beyonce,Celine Dion, Elton John I mean you can dislike them but you cannot say they do not know how to sing at least they can hold a note. I understand Zeghibe’s point, but he is attacking the wrong artist and maybe he does it just because he does not like their music what a twat.

Imp | 4/26/2009, 3:42 am EST

Clowns... | 4/25/2009, 3:00 pm EST

Fuck Beyonce. Fuck Kanye. Fuck Lil’ Wayne.

Fuck auto-tune. Fuck artists who have no real talent and ZERO singing ability.

Am I a hater? FUCK YES. I hate this fake bullshit that counts for “music” these days. These fucking “artists” should be ashamed of themselves.

Beyonce is as bland as they come and she CANNOT sing. She can sing better than she can act, which isn’t saying much. She’s a clown just like all of these other rap and r&b “artists” out there.

Fuck any of you who own any of her albums. Seriously.

woltgan | 4/25/2009, 1:25 am EST

Fuck autotune! If someone can’t sing, DON”T LET THEM!

Troy | 4/25/2009, 12:32 am EST

I think all these people who think Beyonce is Beejeezus need to take a seat in the corner and relax. She gets peed on just like any other singer, cuz she definitely isn’t an actress…and singer, one would have to question that when you have all these Excellent singers who get looked over because they don’t fit a certain persona or of a certain size who have beautiful voices. I must say that the voice enhancement was funny as hell, and all these people pissing a fit need to chill, because Beyonce is still getting paid, and you all are getting your blood pressure up over someone else talking negative about a “B*tch” who doesn’t even know you broke “B*tches even exist….lol…c’mon. The only thing Beyonkie know about you all is you keep her bank account fat. She won’t be there if you get sick in the hospital and she damn sure won’t be there if you died tomorrow, broke cuz you gave her your hard earned money buying her cd’s, going watch her bad movies, and paying your money or your momma’s money to sit at her concert…Really, yall need to get a real life.

Fu | 4/24/2009, 11:44 pm EST

It’s funny what gets somebody or somebodies labeled “haters”. It’s even funnier who the REAL haters are.

yahyahyumyum | 4/24/2009, 9:57 pm EST

Imagine if autotune existed around the time of Dylan in the 60’s when he was a big pop star? Christ… it would have been terrible… or imagine auto-tune on ‘Nervermind’.. Jesus Christ.. why have people got so dumb and have forgotten that the best music is the kind of music that REAL people make. Eff this auto-tune garbbbage

You weren’t trying to make a point. You were goofing around, for fun.

Jungleland2 | 4/24/2009, 4:09 pm EST

Rolling Stone - It’s time to expose the AutoTune artists

You would think that with Pro-Tools you have endless takes, any singer should be able to get it right eventually

frog leg | 4/24/2009, 3:40 pm EST

to ‘comehomenow’, i never said bands dont use pitch correction as far vocals go. but there is no faking in the instruments. watching a singer perform on stage who doesnt even sing to begin with is like watching a play. theres nothing real about it!! its like going to a strip joint minus the nudity. your there to watch a hot broad shake her ass and dance, thats it.

Todd | 4/24/2009, 3:13 pm EST

OK I read some comments I get it now.

Todd | 4/24/2009, 2:57 pm EST

How much did they have to pay him to say he faked it? Is there a way to extract vocals from the audio of a DVR’d performance?

Any audiophiles wanna help me out with this one?

comehomenow | 4/24/2009, 1:59 pm EST

Also, to Frog Leg: You think there are bands that don’t use pitch correction?

comehomenow | 4/24/2009, 1:58 pm EST

What Kanye and T-Pain do to their voice is extreme, 100% auto-tune applied to a recording. What you hear on say, a Maroon 5 is just some basic pitch adjustment, 10-15% auto-tune. It’s also possible to isolate just vocals from any recording, so I believe what he says about altering a recording from TV. It’s completely possible.

To the person who said Beyonce would be in sales, get real. They can’t air-brush award shows and daytime TV. The woman would be a model even if she did sing like this.

Rob | 4/24/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Heathen2002, you talk about others knowing nothing about recording, but you say that Autotune isn’t an effect. Umm, sorry to break it to you, but it is. It is a Pitch Shifting Processor, also know as a vocal effect.

mary | 4/24/2009, 1:20 pm EST

what’s with using the word retard. if you don’t like someone calling them a retard is just not right.

Yolanda | 4/24/2009, 1:08 pm EST

I know that people are mad just because he altered her voice. I think its awesome to how he did it. I know Zeghibe personally and he was just applying the things he learned from school. The video is all real, the software itself can be used by anyone who cares to learn and apply, and that’s what exactly what he did. I dont know why people are making a big fuss out of this because if everyone knows that Beyonce can sing, then why make this incident bigger? If one cant use technology what is meant for, then why even have it if you cant use it? Besides in the entertainment business they are always altering women’s bodies, and men’s packages, and of course the pitch correcting in the singing industry, so why not do the opposite! I think its being hypocritical.

heathen2002 | 4/24/2009, 12:18 pm EST

What’s Real- Auto tune is not an effect. It can be used as an effect as it is with Kanye and Lil Wayne because they abuse it. The average listener can’t hear if auto-tune is applied if it has been used as it was intended: to correct pitch!

Bernie | 4/24/2009, 11:16 am EST

The fact is if he did alter the video “that he got off TV” then the backing track would have been affected (the instruments). The only way that he could have altered only the vocals would be if he had an isolated vocal track. But he said that he pulled it from the TV.

My theory is that it actually is her singing. The band was playing to a recorded vocal track and what you are hearing is the board feed of her actual voice. Someone from the network must have leaked this.

Big Baby | 4/24/2009, 11:10 am EST

Jamey | 4/24/2009, 10:17 am EST

12 years in questioning her vocal ability? Did anyone see her at the Oscars the other year. Her vocal ability is flat at best. Thank God for T and A and airbrushing cause otherwise she would be in sales.

Whats real | 4/24/2009, 6:35 am EST

Everybody in the world has heard autotune enough to know what it sounds like when it activates on a voice. So for anybody that thinks they heard it on the so called hoax vocals from beyonce I advise you to go listen to some t pain or lil wayne and remember what autotune sounds like and take another listen to beyonces “hoax” today performance again. the only way to actually prove she sings as good as everybody thinks she does is to sing live without a microphone.. try to find that on youtube…lol

Seriously? | 4/24/2009, 2:23 am EST

Moxie, I’d like to know what you’re smoking to say “, Rihanna can sing and sing live well enough.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME? SHE IS ONE OF THE WORST LIVE PERFORMERS EVER!!! Her voice has virtually no pitch or rhythm, she is PAINFUL to watch live as she does not do any sort of dancing whatsoever, not even a little head-bobbing, which is a travesty considering she is most famous for club anthems such as Pon De Replay Please Don’t Stop The Music and Disturbia, so it makes no sense to sing those songs and not dance to them. Without studio magic, she is nothing special, plain and simple. Would she be that popular if she was ugly? No. Her looks and Jigga Man’s brilliant marketing are what got her to the top, that’s all. And all you so-called sound engineers who claim to be experts and say this is Beyonce’s real voice and that you would know better than anyone else (cough, cough, Patrick), go to hell. An anonymous poster can claim to be a rocket scientist, so don’t think everyone’s fooled by you. We’ve heard Beyonce sing live and acapella, we can decide for ourselves whether this tape is an exaggeration or not. Live performances are what separate the talented from the fakes. Beyonce’s not fluff, she has actual substance, which is something we could only dream of saying about Rihanna, Britney Spears (full-time lip-syncer) The Jonas Brothers, etc. Hopefully Susan Boyle will cause misogynistic record execs to stop signing talentless hot chicks they can easily market as products and actually sign people who are WORTHY of recording contracts. The record industry is already losing out to the internet and indie labels, they’ll have to give in with their archaic ways…

Love is it | 4/24/2009, 1:42 am EST

heathen2002 | 4/23/2009, 8:38 pm EST

Hey Jack-(supposed music producer Jack)- You’re the kind of person that has contributed to the overall decline of the industry. The ordinary listener can’t hear the “artifacts” of the pitch alteration, and could much less care.. Therein lies the problem. “producers” such as yourself are the perfect example of a computer nerd who knows nothing about real music. You spend too much time perfecting recordings. If you worked with real artists, you wouldn’t have that problem or need to utilize auto-tune. You probably don’t realize that recording is an art… People such as yourself don’t even know the basics of something as simple as mic placement.. You’re an idiot…

now someone that needs pitch correction and a classic eventide on her vocals is Cassie… sorry diddy but you know the engineers work hard on her LOL

hahaha | 4/23/2009, 6:42 pm EST

jack i to making a living as a REAL MUSIC PRODUCER and have a REAL ENGINEERING background.
patrick obviously doesn’t know about melodyne or waves tune. you can easily alter notes with out a lot of artifacts.
i to often had to do it as an engineer for ppl that really couldn’t hit their harmony notes.

having been in a studio with beyonce recording a year ago.. i can tell you no she isnt perfect, far from it. but she isn’t anywhere near off as the hack that was posted.she hardly needs pitch correction. some time alignmets and smooth correction to make sure the vox have a unison sound is done on damn near every record in the last 15 years…
hell she knows the song so well that even if she did lip sync and wanna sing here and there she’d never be off that much… what digital technology has done to music… shame.

W. Axl Rose | 4/23/2009, 6:16 pm EST

Jack | 4/23/2009, 5:22 pm EST

To Patrick who claims to be a studio engineer:
I am a music producer (a real one), and I could tell in less than one second that this was obviously faked. You couldn’t hear the artifacts from the pitch alerations? That was ALL I could hear. You should probably get a new job, because you’re obviously a pretty lousy engineer.

Try getting Ciara or Cassie to sing live, though.

As far as Beyonce, who cares. She’s a complete bore. This was the most exciting story about to come along in a LONG while. lol

Remember: a little skepticism a day keeps gullibility away.

Anonymous | 4/23/2009, 4:12 pm EST

The fact that Beyonce let this whole thing roll off her shoulder proves her to be a professional. Not like Kanye, with his huge ego (which got checked by south park) Everyone knows beyonce can sing her ass off, there’s no way she could ever butcher her own song like this. People don’t like her because she’s over exposed.

if you see her interviews, you would know she’s really down to earth and no one out there right now is even coming close to the high quality performances and concerts!

patrick | 4/23/2009, 3:35 pm EST

I am a studio engineer and work daily with pitch correction…Autotune won’t do what was done to her voice without a significant artifact. Listen to Cher’s last record…you can hear when the correction happens. I don’t here radical correction artifacts on the Beyonce “fake” It sounds real to me.

rapid I move | 4/23/2009, 3:32 pm EST

No, this isn’t pitch correction. You can’t simply isolate her voice from the music from a TV feed, and adjust that alone. You can layer it, but then you’d be hearing the track out of key. I think she really just messed up and her publicist created this ruse as a cover up.

Anonymous | 4/23/2009, 3:26 pm EST

Most pop, and rap “performances” use backing tracks, and computer based enhancements.

But the vast majority of concert tours by ROCK AND ROLL bands, are fully live.

don't matter | 4/23/2009, 3:17 pm EST

Sweetly done sure is hating on Rihanna. God bless you and your ignorance and stupidity! I hope it grows and grows…

Beyonce | 4/23/2009, 3:13 pm EST

You silly people!

Seth | 4/23/2009, 2:37 pm EST

At least he made his point in a positive way. He picked an artist with a real vocal talent. He acknowledged that she was talented, and that it was easy to make her sound like a train wreck. Beyonce was graceful under fire, because she knows what she can do. The inverse is also true, It wouldn’t be too hard to make The Jonas Brothers sound terrible. They are already 95% there. The only way to truly know what a person really sounds like is to be in a room with them, in person, with no mics present. Some people would still try to blame the acoustics.

jasmine | 4/23/2009, 2:23 pm EST

Rudolph Hess | 4/23/2009, 2:17 pm EST

I don’t care how much equipment enhancement or pitch correction software she uses, I can’t stand that moronic heifer cow Bouncy. If you’ve ever seen the segment from Punk’d where she looks like a deer in the headlights after knocking down an Xmas tree. Kids were crying an she smiled and waved as if nothing happened. Dumb.

Richard | 4/23/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Jeff makes a very good point.

I’d be VERY interested in a cover story about backing tracks, but it’ll never happen. RS would clearly protect the artists they cover so frequently.

Dick Cheney or George Bush is unlikely to give RS a REAL interview, so I guess they can make fun of those twits all they want.

But if our favorite rock stars are pulling the wool over our eyes too, and taking our hard earned money in the process, shouldn’t we know about that as well?

Sweetly Done | 4/23/2009, 2:07 pm EST

How do you think Rihanna got so famous? Now we all know Beyonce can sing and sing live well! But what about artist like Rihanna? Their is another one but I cant think of the name right off hand.

I’m glad he did this and used an artist that could actually sing to prove his point. Just like the lady that just came out that dont have the look but have the talent. Again, I’m glad he did this. The music business is all about profit and not talent, there are some who have it (Beyonce, Mary J, Christina and so on, we know who) and there are some who dont (RIHANNA, top of the list).

Seriously - where is the Rolling Stone expose on the fact literally 95% of touring acts use backing tracks, pitch correction, etc?

What, don’t want to piss off potential cover story subjects? You report on political shenanigans all the time, where’s the article on how canned Muse’s ‘live’ show is?

“That would be like questioning if Kobe Bryant could shoot a jump shot. The vocals were obviously altered.”

Kobe Bryant’s jumpshot occurs on a real basketball court, not inside a computer.
