New Radiohead Album Coming Out October 10th

9/30/07, 9:29 pm EST

Radiohead have been teasing fans with cryptic clues about their seventh studio album for weeks, and now they have made a surprising announcement via their Dead Air Space Web site: The album, titled In Rainbows, is coming out October 10th. As of now, there has been no news about the band signing to a label (their deal with Capitol ended after the release of 2003’s Hail to the Thief), and In Rainbows is only available for sale via the Web site Inrainbows.com (for now). Fans can either order discboxes containing the new album on CD and vinyl, a second CD with additional tracks, artwork and photos, a lyric booklet and a DRM-free download (the package will ship on or before December 3rd but the download will activate October 10th) or a DRM-free download, which will be active as of October 10th. The price: interesting. The discbox costs 40£; the download is pay what you wish (plus a transaction fee). UPDATE: A press release now indicates “Radiohead are currently planning a traditional CD release of In Rainbows for early 2008.”

Bruce Springsteen Performs Longest Ever “Today” Concert

9/28/07, 7:58 pm EST

Today show live concerts normally air between 8:30 and 9:00 AM, but this morning Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band broke the rules and played the show’s longest-ever set. “I can count on one hand the number of acts we would seek this for,” Today executive producer Jim Bell tells Rock Daily. “[Springsteen] is known for playing longer than scheduled, so we were prepared. He was supposed to play about four songs and he played seven.” The final set list was a mix of classics and new cuts from Magic: “The Promised Land,” “Radio Nowhere,” “Livin’ in the Future,” “My Hometown,” “Night,” “Last to Die” and “Long Walk Home” (click above for footage from Magic debut single “Radio Nowhere”). Bell says this morning’s crowd ranks among the show’s largest, extending onto the plaza of 30 Rockefeller Center and including two women who arrived yesterday morning from Ohio to claim their front-row spot (giant screens were set up so everyone had a decent view). “Bruce had the Magic this morning, and we’ve had a lot of great feedback coming in from all quarters from people saying how special was,” Bell quips. After the show was over, Springsteen and Co. packed up and headed back to New Jersey, where tonight they’ll play the final of three benefit warm-up gigs for their fall tour.

Ryan Adams and Minnesota Just Can’t Seem To Get Along

9/28/07, 5:25 pm EST

Does Ryan Adams have a vendetta against the great state of Minnesota? Back in 2003, Adams played a remarkably bad concert at Minneapolis’ First Avenue, the club that features in Prince’s Purple Rain film. At that infamous show, Adams railed against the sound problems that marred the set, played several songs twice, and even had the audacity to trash on the Twin Cities’ prodigal son, Paul Westerberg. So what does Adams do for an encore? While playing Thursday night at Minneapolis’ State Theater, Adams once again complained about the venue’s sound. Maybe the Land of 10,000 Lakes has statewide acoustic problems? Maybe Adams was just pissed to discover that the Timberwolves traded Kevin Garnett? Who knows?

Adams became so frustrated, he took turns between being a rock star and a roadie as he moved two monitors, his guitar pedals, and the location of the microphone. (more…)

The Phil Spector Trial: Spector Dances (Literally) and the Aftermath

9/28/07, 3:57 pm EST

WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY?
After the first match of Spector vs. California ended in a mistrial, Team Spector made some roster moves before the rematch begins. Out is defense lawyer Roger Rosen and rumored to be out is Bradley Brunon, as Spector felt a mistrial by the final tally of 10-2 was way too close to a guilty verdict. Taking over at lead counsel will be San Francisco legal giant Dennis Riordan, who cameoed at the first trial to help Spector’s squad during the tedious jury instructions process. Christopher Plourd and Spector consigliere Linda Kenney-Baden will still defend Spector, for now. Even though the lawyer firing shows Spector was disappointed that he was only sparred from jail by two acquitting jurors, that didn’t prevent Spector and his trouble-making wife Rachelle from doing a victory dance (and hump — see above) upon returning to their faux-mansion in Alhambra, as Phil celebrated being (for now, at least) a free man.

THE JURORS SPEAK:
A day after Juror nine expressed his regret that the jury couldn’t find Spector unanimously guilty, Juror ten, who was also the jury foreman, was ambushed into an interview with Court TV to explain to the viewers at home why he voted that Spector be acquitted. (more…)

Britney Spears Comeback Tracker: The Prince of Darkness Has Come to Her Defense

9/28/07, 3:21 pm EST

File this under “you know you’re in bad shape when… .” According to some footage Blabbermouth brought to our attention, Ozzy Osbourne has joined the short list of Britney Spears defenders. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the rocker impored the world to cut the pop star struggling with a botched comeback performance, management difficulties and custody troubles galore some slack. “I think [the media] are very unfair to Britney Spears … give her a break. I don’t know what the inside story is, all I see is this broken thing on TV every night.” Osbourne, in this case the voice of reason, continued, “She’ll die! She might kill herself! I hope she doesn’t. She’s got a mother and two kids, give her a break.”

Beyonce Show Canceled Over Dress Code, Radiohead Hoax Revealed, Oasis Squashes Beef With Blur

  • After Gwen Stefani was forced to tone down her performance in Malaysia because of the country’s strict dress code, Beyoncé’s Kuala Lumpur debut was canceled thanks to protests from Malaysia’s Muslim groups. Beyoncé also reportedly refused to conform to the code, which doesn’t allow female performers to show any skin from the top of the chest down to the knees, and thus impeding on her ability to be “Bootylicious.”
  • A countdown is ticking on a recently unearthed site called RadioheadLP7.com, but according to sources inside Camp Radiohead, the only thing that will be revealed when the clock strikes zeros is that the site is a hoax. Single Minded: Jack White Duets With Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Lily Allen, Of Montreal and More

9/28/07, 12:31 pm EST

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Jack White and Bob Dylan, “Meet Me in the Morning” [Live Duet]
It’s genuinely difficult to figure out who this duet benefits more. It’s like God doing a duet with PJ Harvey in an all-you-can-eat burrito bar while The Big Lebowski is playing in the background.

Lily Allen, “Don’t Get me Wrong” [Pretenders Cover]
Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: young British female singer crosses paths with uber-producer Mark Ronson, crafts an album that’s championed by blogs, becomes tabloid sensation and slowly begins exhibiting erratic behavior. Instead of flaming out in a series of increasingly embarrassing public scuffs involving marital scratching and horse pills, this one toughs it out, stays the course and eventually turns in a charming little cover of a Pretenders song. Oh, America. Always hitching your horse to the wrong cart.

Of Montreal, “Friends of Mine” [Zombies Cover]
Athens costume-pop band drag a Zombies chestnut into the big, dark Romper Room of the soul. For everyone who ever wondered what a pop song would sound like if it was made out of Nerf.

Elvis Costello, “Beautiful” [Christina Aguilera Cover]
This version features some kind of clanging electro-percussion and lunar lounge xylophones. Also known as the “Dad, stop embarrassing me!” mix.

Wale, “Good Girl” [Cousin Cole Remix]
It’s obviously a little ridiculous to post a remix of a song by a semi-obscure D.C. rapper, but we’re still living in the ideal universe, remember? The one where Lily Allen beats Amy Winehouse. In that one, Wale is huge and Shop Boyz are marginal regional celebrities. So enjoy this remix of his number-one single.

Rock Reality Show Recap: Hip-Hop Is the Only Loser as Sebastian, Perez and Co. Team Up With Mentors on “Celebrity Rap Superstar”

9/28/07, 11:56 am EST

Every week on Celebrity Rap Superstar, an odd mixture of C-list stars test their skills (or lack thereof) on the mic, while Rock Daily’s Rock Reality Show Recaps of the series test our skills at analyzing some really awful hip-hop. Here’s our fifth report:

Sixty Minutes in Five Sentences: In an effort to prove that live rap can be ridiculous no matter who holds the mic, Celebrity Rap Superstar had the remaining contestants perform with their mentors, doing the more experienced rappers’ original tracks (they were going for Dr. Dre and Eminem, but wound up with four pairs of Kris-Kross). Perez Hilton and Tone Loc flowed through “Funky Cold Medina” like molasses with depression while Sebastian Bach and Kurupt gave an enthusiastic but messy version of “Doggy Dog World.” The votes from last week put playmate Kendra Wilkinson in first again (apparently hip-hop hell has frozen over) and Perez still in last. And in the words of the blogger with apparently apathetic readers, the show was “crazy bananas — like a milkshake.”

8-Mile Moment: While not quite Marshall Mathers material, Shar Jackson and MC Lyte’s peformance was clearly the best out of the Sensai and Danielson duos. Performing in a towering red beanie and oversized red jacket that brought back the Nineties and all its accompanying stereotypes, Shar spat MC Lyte’s “Ruffneck,” which Lyte pedagodically informed the audience “is a term for a lot of West Indians I grew up with.” (more…)

Robert Plant: No Led Zeppelin Tour

9/28/07, 10:48 am EST

Robert Plant has confirmed there will be no Led Zeppelin tour — or at least, he’s not planning on one (“Not for me but I can’t speak for anyone else,” he told the U.K.’s Daily Express). After news broke that Zep would reunite with Jason Bonham on drums for November 26th’s Ahmet Ertegun tribute at London’s O2 Arena, the inevitable speculation began that the band would follow up the gig with a tour — the fervor for tickets to their one-off gig shut down two Web sites affiliated with the show, and 20 million fans applied for a chance to nab tickets. “We need to do one last great show, because we’ve done some shows and they’ve been crap,” Plant told Express. The Zeppelin frontman went on to say that he worries the touring life doesn’t suit him now that he’s getting older. “When I do come back from touring I’m shocked to find a lot of my mates tend to be going to bed far too early and that means I should probably be doing the same. Maybe I should stop having a good time and get old.”

Springsteen Satellite Radio Kicks Off With Rare Live Concert, Stephen Malkmus Announces New Album, Eric Clapton Autobiography Due October 9th

9/28/07, 9:39 am EST

  • E Street Radio — Sirius Satellite Radio’s station dedicated exclusively to music from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band — will debut today. The first show will kick off with a rare 1978 concert taped at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey, during the band’s Darkness on the Edge of Town tour, and will continue with both features on the band’s upcoming Magic and other classic concert recordings dating back to 1973. Sirius will also ask Springsteen fans (celebrities included) to submit their favorite live recordings for possible inclusion in future broadcasts. Fans whose picks are chosen will then be able to guest host.
  • Stephen Malkmus will release his fourth solo album in March 2008, Pitchfork reports. The still-untitled disc is Malkmus’ first since 2005, and he has also scheduled a pair of dates with the Jicks this fall: December 19th in San Francisco and December 21st in Portland.
  • The Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl is partnering with Gibson Guitars for the next release in their “Inspired By” series, a DG-335 that was inspired by Grohl’s Trini Lopez signature model. The guitar is available for purchase starting next Thursday.
  • Travis Barker of blink-182 and +44 fame is producing grill master Paul Wall’s next album, MTV News reports. The pair toured together with Fall Out Boy this past spring, and Barker predicts his style is rubbing off on Wall: “Most of the Houston stuff is slow and real feel-good. This has faster tempos. Still feel-good, but it’ll be different for Paul,” he said.
  • Eric Clapton will release his memoirs, titled Clapton, The Autobiography, on October 9th. In the book, he chronicles his both his career — from his days with the Yardbirds to hanging out with Jimi Hendrix — and his personal life, including his addictions and the accidental death of his four-year-old son.
