A temp worker's obsession with a married professional in this triller

THE BUZZ: What's this, a Beyonce movie that isn't a musical biopic? She sings in it, though, right? No? Not even a duet with Ali Larter? Would "Fatal Attraction: The Musical" have been too much to ask for here? It's like a serious Attraction remake, but with Anne Archer as the lead character. Also, we are dying to see if B. kills A. with her thighs.

Earth

Earth [4/22]

Director: Alastair Fothergill Mark Linfield
Stars: Patrick Stewart (Full Cast)
Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The Plot: A documentary that follows the migration paths of four animal families.

Here's a featurette for the movie Earth.

THE BUZZ: Planet Earth watchers might experience déjà vu here, and for good reason: upstart, green-minded distributor DisneyNature whittled their inaugural offering from the BBC series, and swapped in James Earl Jones for one-time narrator Patrick Stewart. Also reduced were the number of animal families in peril, from four to three. Talk about extinction ...

Fighting

Director: Dito Montiel
Stars: Channing Tatum, Terrence Howard, Luis Guzmán (Full Cast)
Studio: Rogue Pictures

The Plot: In New York City, a young counterfeiter (Tatum) is introduced to the world of underground street fighting by a seasoned scam artist (Howard), who becomes his manager on the bare-knuckling brawling circuit.

Clip: Evan goads Shawn during their fight
Interview: Channing Tatum "On how he broke his nose in the movie"

THE BUZZ: The secret weapon here is not Channing Tatum's untapped potential to be violent; rather, it's writer-director Dito Montiel, who coaxed out Tatum's lone well-received performance in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (it's the chiseled young star's Shattered Glass, if you will). Let's also consider the presence of Terrence Howard and Luis Guzmán, two performers who could make lesser actors better by default. With the right underdog characterization, action choreography, and editing, this one might not be as bad as even I, or you, think.

The Soloist

The Soloist

Director: Joe Wright
Stars: Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey Jr., Catherine Keener (Full Cast)
Studio: DreamWorks SKG

The Plot: In Los Angeles, reporter Steve Lopez (Downey Jr.) befriends Nathaniel Ayers (Foxx), a brilliant but troubled musician and one-time Julliard student who currently lives on Skid Row. In a series of revealing articles, Lopez draws attention to Ayers's remarkable story, while Ayers still dreams of a grand performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

This is a clip from the movie The Soloist.
Interview: Lisa Gay Hamilton "On the pride she feels being involved with the film"

THE BUZZ: In mid-October of last year, Paramount made the decision to push Jamie Foxx and Co. from their movie's Oscar-friendly berth to this new date. Why? Crowded marketplace, I'm assuming (for now, though I'm digging for more info). Reports indicate P'mount might still let the film qualify for Oscars with a quiet, awards-qualifying release at year's end, which, provided some nominations come through, could turn this into a springtime hit. Either way, it should be quite something to watch Atonement director Joe Wright deftly move between time periods in to tell Ayers's remarkable story (get some background here). Bank on top-notch performances from Foxx, Downey Jr., and Keener (who plays Steve Lopez's wife), as well as a layered screenplay from Susannah Grant (Erin Brokovich).

Tyson

Tyson [limited]

Director: James Toback
Stars: Mike Tyson (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics

The Plot: A mixture of original interviews, archival footage, and photographs sheds light on the life experiences of Mike Tyson.

A mixture of original interviews, archival footage, and photographs sheds light on the life experiences of Mike Tyson.
An intimate view of the life of heavy weight boxing champion, Mike Tyson, in this documentary

THE BUZZ: James Toback is known primarily as a writer, and he hasn't helmed a documentary in a decade, but his connection to Mike Tyson, which reaches back to 1987, when Toback was directing The Pick-Up Artist, makes him the only credible filmmaker to handle a profile of the former heavyweight champ (sorry Spike Lee and others). Back then, Toback acknowledges he spoke with Tyson about his experiences in losing himself -- "to have the 'I' disintegrate, and to feel disembodied, as if there were a void inside." With a bond like this, that strengthened through Tyson's prison stint and continues to this day, what else do you really need to know before you rush out to see one of the best documentaries of this year?

Mutant Chronicles

Mutant Chronicles [limited]

Director: Simon Hunter
Stars: Thomas Jane, Ron Perlman, Devon Aoki (Full Cast)
Studio: Magnet Releasing

The Plot: In the year 2707, a soldier (Jane) leads a campaign to save the Earth -- which has been rendered unrecognizable from a war between the four corporations who control the planet -- from the mutant menace which has been unleashed from its prison by an explosion.

A fight against enemy mutants to save the earth in this science fiction thriller

THE BUZZ: Maybe all the people who hated the Mutant Chronicles cut which screened at Comic-Con and elsewhere last year will regroup for version two; Magnolia Pictures provided director Simon Hunter with the resources to tinker with his film for this limited release (note that the VOD premiere occurs/occurred one month prior to the theatrical bow). Will this engage the critics? No way, but perhaps more fans will get behind the revamped picture, and allow this entire universe to live on either in DVD sequels, webisodes, what have you. It's the kind of prospect that serves as a custom fit for the industry-savvy Thomas Jane, who perhaps should create his own distribution company?

The Informers

The Informers [limited]

Director: Gregor Jordan
Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Kim Basinger, Mickey Rourke (Full Cast)
Studio: Senator Distribution

The Plot: A multi-strand narrative set in early 1980's Los Angeles, centered on an array of characters who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star, an aging newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman, an amoral ex-con). Connecting the intertwining strands are a group of beautiful, blonde young men and women who sleep all day and party all night, doing drugs -- and one another -- with abandon, never realizing that they are dancing on the edge of a volcano.

Lives intersect during one week in Los Angeles in 1983

THE BUZZ: The rage for all things 1980s ends here, since Gregor Jordan's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel was all but disowned by the Sundance set after its premiere back in January. The idea of a nearly always nude Amber Heard should not conjure up notions of it's-so-bad-it's-Showgirls-good here. Seriously, just move away and move on from this one.

Clip: Who do you think you are, my father?
Interview: Leslie Mann "On the story"

THE BUZZ: The highlights of this body-switching comedy: Director Burr Steers is the guy who made Igby Goes Down and the presence of Leslie Mann, who can turn any bit part into a memorable performance. Here Mann plays Perry's confused wife, when her husband's adult self appears in the form of Zac Efron. (Good luck with assuming Perry's behaviors, Zac, and let me know if you need a liver transplant, because I LOVE YOU!!!!) This blog is a one-stop destination for all things 17, with a definite focus on the HSM star, who's also garnering critical acclaim for his role in Richard Linklater's Me and Orson Welles.

Director: Kevin Macdonald
Stars: Russell Crowe, Rachel McAdams, Ben Affleck (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: Picture-perfect U.S. congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) seems to be the rising star in the world of politics -- until his research assistant, who was also his mistress, is murdered. And then the secrets start coming out... It's up to star reporter Cal McCaffrey (Russell Crowe) and his co-hort Della (Rachel McAdams) to uncover the truth, but there are three things that complicate matters: 1) Cal's friendship and loyalty to Stephen; 2) their ruthless editor (Helen Mirren); and 3) a conspiracy that goes far, far deeper than they thought.

Clip: Collins confronts Cal about his trustworthiness and integrity
Interview: Rachel McAdams "On Della's ambitions"

THE BUZZ: You couldn't ask for a better cast for this thriller: Affleck is spot-on, Crowe finally gets to flex his acting muscle without mugging (in a role that was considered for Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks), McAdams finally gets to act period, and Mirren is every reporter's worst nightmare boss. The original 2003 BBC miniseries was fantastic television (once you could understand everyone's accents) and if they don't mess it up, this could be stellar, especially once you add in director Kevin Mcdonald (The Last King of Scotland). Our only question: why the April release? This could be a perfect adult option for the sequel-friendly days of summer.

Hannah Montana: The Movie

Director: Peter Chelsom
Stars: Miley Cyrus, Emily Osment, Billy Ray Cyrus (Full Cast)
Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The Plot: As Hannah Montana's popularity begins to take over her life, Miley Stewart (Miley Ray Cyrus), urged on by her father (Billy Ray Cyrus) takes a trip to her hometown of Crowley Corners, Tennessee to get some perspective on what matters in life the most.

THE BUZZ: If one takes into consideration this story's thematic elements and combines them with Miley's real-life trials and tribs, one might assert that the young star is boxing up her alter ego and preparing for the next chapter in her career. Affirming this notion is the fact that novelist Nicholas Sparks (he of Notebook fame) is customizing his first-ever screenplay to suit Ms. Cyrus, and the project is tentatively set to arrive around the time of her 18th birthday. Aiding the transition here is adult-fare specialist, director Peter Chelsom (Shall We Dance).

THE BUZZ: Taking a page out of Pixar's playbook, D'Works may have finally caught on that audiences (and Academy voters) prefer a good story, interesting characters and funny jokes to a farting donkey. Adding an all-star line-up and 3-D effects is pretty awesome, too. "Is this potential serial action?" Insiders says yes.

THE BUZZ: No doubt that Justin Lin was eager to return to the director's chair after shaking the dust off of this franchise back in '06, and we can only imagine that Diesel, Walker, Rodriguez, and Brewster caused zero problems during their respective negotiations to reprise the characters that first brought them true fame (or something like it). One great thing: Lin has delivered a teaser trailer (located above) that is better than most full-fledged action sequences in recent memory. Too bad this one was detoured off the summer release calendar, though ...

THE BUZZ: Just two movies in, and the Neveldine/Taylor filmmaking duo have a legion of fans who appreciate their hyper-visualized sensibilities. Clearly they have more detractors, but with Jason Statham in your pocket, who cares about critics? Returning alongside Statham and Amy Smart in the sequel are Dwight Yoakam and Efren Ramirez; climbing aboard for the first time is an inspired cast of supporters, including Corey Haim and Bai Ling, who, let's face it, should have been the primary villain.

Here's a featurette from the movie Observe & Report.

THE BUZZ: While the Foot Fist Way failed to make director Jody Hill a household name, the weird-o action comedy did capture Hollywood's attention, and one of the undying movie trends in Los Angeles is the desire to push the boundaries of mainstream comedy. Call it the Apatow effect. From what we understand, OaR might even offend perverts with its uncouth behaviors. Rogen's playing an unlikable character for the "first" time (that's what Internet boys are saying, to which I say: Did you not see Knocked Up?), and his clashes with Liotta are reportedly as un-politically correct as his tryst with Anna Faris (playing a put-upon cosmetics-counter girl) is gag-inducing. Plus, full frontal male nudity.

A teacher (Cage) opens a time capsule that has been dug up at his son's school; in it are some chilling predictions -- some that have already occurred and others that are about to. Does his family play a role in the coming events?

THE BUZZ: Great premise, but what's with the numbers game, didn't The Number 23 make such a story device a dicey proposition for a while? Not that I've deplaned from Alex Proyas's sci-fi trips, but even he seemed disinterested in his new movie when he presented a first look at Comic-Con last year (sans Nic Cage, who lately seems as disinterested in promoting any of his movies). I'm still giving this one a shot, however, since the trailer is effective, plus it might be cool to see what Proyas can do with a budget much smaller than, say, I, Robot's. Meanwhile, it's always fun to track Cage's up-and-down fame, as well as his ever-curious professional hair and make-up.

THE BUZZ: Aww, cute, the notion of bro-mance goes truly mainstream here, instead of being relegated to reality shows and whatnot. Even better, writer-director John Hamburg finally returns to the big screen after his mainstream success, 2004's Along Came Polly. Without knowing the full score, we'll credit Hamburg's indie sensibilities with landing Rashida Jones from The Office in the role of Rudd's fiance and slotting Jamie Pressly as her BFF (and not the other way around). Jason Segel breaks away from Judd Apatow's clutches for a role that should make him look way less desperate, in a movie that will undoubtedly have better-realized female characters.

Interview: Sara Campbell "On her character having everything she wanted"

THE BUZZ: This thriller rides into the spring season with a green director and screenwriting team who have successfully ducked having to defend their project's blatant similarities to The Amityville Horror. I'm more perturbed by the reveal-all trailer which was released last fall and quickly went stale. Still, you couldn't ask for a better-value cast, with Elias Koteas playing a priest, no less (just like another HBO vet, Idris Elba who played it Fatherly in David Goyer's The Unborn).
