31-03-2009 16:05 Which Country Will be First to Default? A very good article. And perhaps the first article to see in the future. Perhaps, many smaller countries would find it absolutely necessary to suspend payments on loans. While the big ones can take their sweet time negotiating the new financial world order, the small ones are facing with crushing debt, halved exports, shortages of food and other necessities. Why would they wait? By suspending payments until some international decisions are made, they would at the minimum have access to the money that otherwise goes out of the door to service debt. That money can help them bridge the calamity. Equador has already done that. It would make sense, since the only penalty is not being able to secure more loans. But the truth is, such countries would not get it anyway, or under the conditions that cannot be met internally. So, what is the incentive in continuing the payments? When it comes to financing the trade, their t rading partners will have the incetive to assist that, as trade is mutually beneficial to both. So, very little on the down side.
17-03-2009 10:01 About the Novosti article: "Former Waffen SS veterans demonstrate in Riga despite ban" This seems like a state-sponsored taunt against ethnic Russians in that country. It's insensitive, and it's just plain wrong. Consider this: Russia suffered tens of millions of dead citizens at the hands of these Nazi devils. Millions of unarmed Russians died, many of them women and children at the hands of the Nazi German SS. This is a clear provocation against the entire Russian people. What's not known in Western nations such as Latvia too, and is highly relevant here, is the fact that Russia carried four-fifths of the overall burden of victory against Nazi Germany. That should make Latvians and others feel grateful, because the Nazis would surely have wiped out their people sooner or later had they won. I call on all Latvians to read about the brave Russian heros who took on Nazi tanks at the Battle of Kursk...perhaps then people will be less welcoming of these horrible Nazi SS men.
17-03-2009 09:58 Andrei Murtazin's, Syria's Nuclear Mystery is a seriously flawed peace of reporting. It erroneously states that Syria did not initially report the results of the Israel's raid over Syria. Quite to the contrary, it took weeks for Israel and US to speak about the "event", and when they did, the story kept on changing. Both finally settled on the current version, that is, that Israel targeted a potential nuclear site, with some mysterious North Korean program involved. I really pitty Russian journalists these days. They are not free to really say what they see; instead they look for "mainstream" explanations in the West, as if they are afraid of not being considered good enough unless they can demonstrate the skill in mouthing off stock phrases from the Western media.
17-03-2009 09:55 Regarding the story posted on March 17, "Russia proposes macroeconomic, budget standards to G20", gold bullion should be championed as the international reserve currency. It is universally desired and is not dependent on the financial soundness of any particular country or government. This would be in the best interests of Russia and all other countries.
13-03-2009 09:09 With regards to the article "Iran missile, nuclear threat 'real, dangerous' - Russian analyst" I think that if the US commits to a deal with Russia over Iran, then it is only because it is in the US's interest to conclude that deal, which means it's not in Russia's interest. Similarly, for example, if the US wanted to suppress a book about the 9/11 attacks being self-inflicted then it would enter into agreements with another country, say Russia. But if the US pushes the deal, then that means it's only in their interest and not Russia's interests.
10-03-2009 09:36 Ilya Kramnik's analysis, "Iran cannot be swapped for missile defense" is one of the most incisive pieces of analysis on this topic. Many have written on the nonsensical nature of this barter, but few have put issues in their context. The discussion of Iran's presumed ambition to develop nuclear weapons must be linked to the effort to de-nuclearize the entire Middle East. While the change in tone and substance is most wellcome, and well wishers are many, there is a troubling aspect of this change. President Obama's non-denial denial of the proposed "trade" was not convincing. And he issued the denial only after President Medvedev's unambiguous refutal of any such intentions on Russia's part. Still, Obama's denial had contained the indirect linkage. He has simply repleated that insuring that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons eliminates the need for missile defense in Europe. There is also a question of how much Obama can actually do. Much of his foreign policy establishment consists of individuals tightly linked with Clintons, and obviously result of the grand bargain with Clinton's supporters in Democratic party. These circles are in their core beliefs neocons with different label. Their bedrock policies of Kissinger and Brzezinski does not bode well for changes in US foreign policy in spite of smiles.
06-03-2009 09:09 Why is Russia building new vulnerable aircraft carrier when decomissioning nuclear subs good for many years to come especially those built with titanium wich would cost a fortune to build today, maybe asking the defence minister about it would help.
04-03-2009 09:00 Hi, Thank you for providing us with unbiased news 24/7 and I'm one of your regular website visitors from Tehran. Unfortunately I have found something inaccurate about your article "Russia in 50th place in technology development - report"  in which it has been mentioned that Nigeria took the last place in ITU's IDI. Actually it's Niger which took the last place and Nigeria is 130th. Again, Thank you for your 24/7 unbiased serviced.
17-02-2009 08:34 Kremlin must decide on sales of S-300 to Iran: I believe Russia should supply Iran with this modern weapons so that it stops another war in the Middle East. We all saw what happened to Iraq while American attacked it and ravaged a civilization. If Russia vetoed at that time, may be this could not have happened and the world would have been a much better place. We need Russia to come up from its shadow and take charge. Russia should become the Superpower that it was and a responsible one to counter the American Hegemony and destruction.
13-02-2009 08:56 Concerning "Russia can launch ICBMs at minute's notice - missile forces chief" The article goes on to explore in depth the Russian 'order of battle,' as it were. So, what does that mean for the world? It means we are on a hair-trigger alert, with great incentive to launch first to keep from getting caught unawares. Both sides are heavily incentivized to strike first, therefore any anomaly that shows up on some lieutenant's radar screen can start World War Three. In fact, now that there are fewer missles extant now than during the 1970s, it's more critical to get one's missles off first; it's easier to destroy, say, the entire American arsenal now than it was in 1975. So, American commanders will have itchy trigger fingers, Russian commanders will have itchy trigger fingers, and perhaps that holds true for emerging nuclear powers such as China, Iran, North Korea, India, and Pakistan. Soon we can expect Japan to go the nuclear route too, because they're so afr aid of North Korea and China. Germany and Poland might follow suit at some distant point as world nuclear tensions heat up. I think there will be a great war very soon.
09-02-2009 09:52 The article by Andrei Fedyashin on the Russian debt is very, very confusing --- to be charitable! I have been able to determine Russia's Government HAS CLOSE TO NO DEBT. What the article seems to do is to ADD ALL THE CORPORATE DEBT, and compare it to the State reserves. This is not done anywhere in the world! British reserves are currently under 40 billion dollars, that is, one tenth of Russian. British government also carries a large debt, and the total corporate debt is not even known! What Russia is doing is making sense. It is capitalizing several larger banks to refinance debts of Russian corporations, but only if they meet certain criteria. Criteria is public, the companies that may qualify is public, and the cap is public. Russia does not HAVE TO refinance the debts of all corporations that owe large amounts of money to foreign banks. Those companies are free to find refinancing elsewhere. The last place to go and look for capital now is in London!
