Nostalgia Coming to DS September 2009

gnition Entertainment and Tecmo are teaming up to bring an old school RPG to the Nintendo DS. As the title suggests, Nostalgia aims to combine everything gamers loved in their classic 8-bit RPGs in a completely new package and original story. Ignition claims that in order to do this Tecmo, “has amassed an all-star dream team of industry veterans to forge a brand new DS adventure that hearkens back to the classic glory days of Japanese role-playing games.”

Nostalgia, which is set in “an alternate-reality version of 19th-century
Earth,” will feature fully 3D graphics, anime-inspired art, and locales based on London, New York, Cairo, Africa, and Russia, which you will travel to via your character’s “steampunk-inspired zeppelin.” Additionally, the game features two combat engines, one standard turn-based engine for regular party vs. monster action, and one for airship battles. If that’s not enough, the creators also promise “brain bending puzzles and tricky Indiana Jones-style traps” throughout the game’s many dungeons. It all sounds good to us, but there’s a fine line between an RPG game being nostalgic, and outright derivative—here’s hoping the team put together by Tecmo knows the difference.
