2009 sees John George entering his fourth season of racing in the British Touring Car Championship. At 48 years-old, George is the second oldest driver on the grid (after David Pinkney), and he shows no signs of slowing down! George will once again be campaigning a Honda Integra in the championship, although it is a completely new car (Pinkney's 2006 chassis) for the new season after he wrote off the old one at the end of 2008 with a spectacular crash at Brands Hatch. |
George has had a relatively short racing career. He first began racing cars in 2000, when he entered the BRDC Formula Ford 1600 championship with a view to progressing on to more prestigious championships. Moving through the Elf Renault Clio Cup in 2001 and 2002, he entered the newly-formed Britcar championship in 2003. |
In 2004 George made an even bigger step up to Britain's premier championship. If the learning curve wasn't already steep enough, he decided to do it by racing the series first-ever LPG-powered car. It was a testing year in which two different cars were used (the S2000 Honda Civic Type-R and later a BTC-spec Peugeot 406 Coupe), but John's hunger for more was there and he would return several seasons later. |
After his first spell in the BTCC, George spent 2005 and 2006 racing the Honda Civic in the Britcar Championship. Then in 2007 he returned to the BTCC for his second attempt, acquiring one of the championship-winning Honda Integra's. It would prove to be George's most successful season to-date in the championship as he went on to score 7 points. He returned again in 2008 with the Team JAG Integra, but struggled to get into the top ten as the field grew increasingly more competitive. One of the biggest shunts seen in the BTCC in recent years rounded of John's season, but he returns in 2009 once again at the wheel of a Honda Integra. |
