Hi Kim, Thanks for writing. The CAN-SPAM laws are pretty clear and unwanted email is a problem, but you can buy lists where people have opted in. You can also (which is required by law) simply have a way for them to opt-out, and while I'm not an expert in the CAN-SPAM law, I know that if you abide by most of the specifics, and give the recipient a way out, then you've done no harm. I have numerous clients that collect emails from site visitors and then those visitors forget and ask to unsubscribe! I believe the best way to collect names is to offer content of value that people opt-in to receive.

What do you think about OpenOffice? I have been using it and I like it better than the M$ Office suite. This is a case where the free version is better than paid.
