News - Rune Factory coming to Wii

Posted by Lawrence Sonntag at 11:09:03 PM EST on 6.9.2007.

Harvest Moon creator Yasuhiro Wada recently confirmed a Wii version of the upcoming DS game Rune Factory: Shin Bokujou Monogatari in an interview with Cubed3. Wada went on to say that Rune Factory will be dropping the Harvest Moon subtitle, and "is now independent game, working as an original series."

Wada is also "thinking positively" about the appearance of older Natsume titles on the Wii Virtual Console, but "can’t answer anything concretely at the moment." Yes, this means we could possibly see the Lufia games. But - and sit down for this - the door is also open for Spanky's Quest!

Harvest Moon: Magical Melody will also be coming to the Wii, without any extra content. Wada states, "this was made for GC so intentionally I didn’t add many changes apart from Wii controller support." Knocking over the lamp with a spirited tilling motion should be incentive enough, though.

With Nintendo adding new control schemes and interfaces, a lot of games take heat when they don't use every feature a console has to offer. "Most people seem think that a game has to have the special feature of that console included, but I don’t think so," Wada stated, voicing his thoughts on the matter. "The most important thing is its game system and, to put it in an extreme context, hardware has nothing to do with the 'fun of games'."

Wada also reflected on his experiences with Harvest Moon over the past ten years, saying, "I don’t have any regrets in the past but... I’ve never finished developing each product with complete satisfaction."

"Where are the huge news coming from SoNY today?"

That was over-hyped, they just showed The Agency for the first time. Yeah, it sounds interesting but it's hardly a game that only PS3 can handle or anything. You really shouldn't believe those "MAJOR announcement in umphteenth of Month X" rumors. Something might happen that day, but it's not usually ground-breaking or anything. Just some minor revealment.

I would say AWL was the last natsume game I liked. Magical Melody just didn't work out for me. I don't think this one will be all that great either.

The last Natsume game I really loved was Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, which released a while ago, so I don't have much hype.

I didn't get the Gamecube version and I'd rather buy it on the Wii.

It doesn't have to be Resident Evil 4 but it will catch a few people who overlooked it on GC.

Harvest Moon: Magical Melody is hardly Resident Evil 4 - I don't think wii controls will add enough to convince those who have already got it to buy it again, or for those that didn't, convince them not to just get the Gamecube version and play that on their wii instead.

AFAIK, Natsume was just the publisher of one Lufia on GB, they never developed one (Neverland was the dev of the two SNES Lufias & Taito was the publisher).

Wait, the Lufia games were made by Natsume?

I SO need to get a DS one of these days. Too many titles are on my list of "games to get". >sigh<

The last Harvest Moon game I ever played was the first. It was pretty good despite some obvious bugs and flaws, and I enjoyed the heck out of it. Fascinatingly original. I'd like to try my hand at Rune Factory eventually.

Just to let you guys know, Harvest Moon: Magical Melody is great. It's by far the best Harvest Moon title I've ever played. To those who played A Wonderful Life and thought it sucked big time, I'm with you, and MM improved significantly on almost everything from the other game. Except the graphics.

At my local Walmart there's a last-gen bargain bin for games, which I have dubbed the "Harvest Moon" bin. Along with various Sonic (and Shadow) games, it has tens of copies of practically every Harvest Moon title in the last 5 or so years. A Wonderful Life for both GCN and PS2, Another Wonderful Life, Friends of Mineral Town, More Friends of Mineral town, Magical Melody, and I believe Harvest Moon DS was in there as well. All for like $18 Canadian each. I must be the only person in my s***ty town that plays these games.

n/a: You'd have to be crazy to think that a Japanese developer would abandon the DS.

I'll also put in my vote of agreement. Too many times I've heard of people whining that a game doesn't use every single hardware feature, and then the same people turn around and whine that if a game uses them, it feels 'gimmicky'. Developers should develop a game with whatever features they feel would be natural and beneficial. Like, for instance, including a microphone for games that need voice-input. Thank goodness the microphone was a peripheral instead of a hardware feature or else we'd have a ton of last-gen games that made you squawk into that thing for no good reason.

I think people's attitudes should be that Nintendo's given a lot of possibilities with it's hardware for game developers to pick and choose whichever features best suit each particular game.

While I'm all for popular DS titles like Trauma Center and Rune Factory (it seemed to do well in Japan, yes?) going to consoles, I hope they don't abandon the DS.

yep i agree with him. if you can't think of a good use for wii features, just make a good game.

"The most important thing is its game system and, to put it in an extreme context, hardware has nothing to do with the 'fun of games'."

I like his attitude. Do whatever is best for the fun of the game, don't try to shoe-horn in features just so you can fill in some checkboxes for ads.
