Funniest Game

Legitimately funny games are possibly the rarest games of all. For a wide variety of reasons, the medium of gaming just isn't very conducive to humor, partly because games often involve repetitive or scripted actions, while humor requires spontaneity and surprise. At any rate, some games do manage to be sharp, clever, or even downright hilarious--hence the award for Funniest Game of 2004. Here are the finalists:

Alien Hominid

(GC, PS2)
Publisher: O3 Entertainment
Developer: The Behemoth
You can talk about the game's inspired art direction, but between the constant destruction of gigantic metal KGB robots and an unlockable Atari 2600-like game called Super Soviet Missile Mastar, Alien Hominid packs in a wide variety of funny-looking enemies and some decent sight gags to boot.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

(PS2)
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Developer: Rockstar North
The Grand Theft Auto games have always had a really great sense of humor. With things like radio stations full of usually clever gags and some truly funny situations from start to finish, San Andreas piles on the comedy.

Katamari Damacy

(PS2)
Publisher: Namco
Developer: Namco
It may be a touch morbid, but hearing the screams of the maniacally wiggling humans when you scoop them up into your garbage ball is always hilarious. The King of All Cosmos also delivers some awesomely weird lines to round it all out.

Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude

(PC, XBOX, PS2)
Publisher: VU Games
Developer: High Voltage Software
Leisure Suit Larry goes for a lot of really obvious gags based on its (somewhat) adult subject matter. But our love of this game's comedy can be summed up by one thing: a talking arcade machine based on the Patrick Swayze opus Road House. We can't make this stuff up, folks. But the people over at High Voltage Software can, and for that, we tip our hats to them.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

(GC)
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Intelligent Systems
Paper Mario has a terrific sense of humor, thanks partly to a first-rate English translation. Much of the absurd humor comes from how Mario is one of the only human characters in the game, and yet his constantly bright-eyed, cheerful, but nearly silent demeanor makes him the most mysterious character of all.
And the Winner is...
