QdQ Improvements
Even though we give our best in every release, people keep on running in those levels, especially at Speed Demos Archive, and every now and then QdQ times are beaten. This page keeps track of those demos that improve runs used in QdQ releases.

Summary of best times (last updated: 15.04.2002)

By using some levels that have been improved since our runs were released, we think these are the current fastest times for those runs. We haven't actually assembled the new versions of these runs, so they exist only potentially, but it seemed proper to keep track of what the current state-of-the-art would be.

  • This one somehow got lost between only 9123.12 unanswered mails, shame on me: Jozsef improved SdSlite's h2m2 by two seconds (just as the SDA time) to 0:26. His mail is dated 23/03/02; the new time for the whole run would be 8:15.
Wednesday, 13.03.2002
  • Hah! Actually SdSlite improvements ain't as scarce. Jozsef kindly pointed us to his furious paced h1m1_017 from SDA, which is another second faster than the original.
Sunday, 10.03.2002
  • Just as promised, Jozsef put together all his efforts to rerun h2m1_018 with enough rockets and make it fit into SdSlite, which would now be 2 seconds faster in total (faster demos are a scarce good here).

  • Yet again, some hot stuff from Jozsef. First off, he drops e4m4 in 0:20, improving QdQwav by two seconds.
  • Secondly, h2m1 in 0:18 - however, he left with only 1 rocket in his pocket, so the improvement can't be counted atm. He promised to send in a version that fits soon.

  • I don't know how that guy can drop some sBBlite2 AND keep on improving QdQwav; all I know is that his e3m5_036 lets the time yield down one second again, and looks close to beeing optimized. Ah, of course it's coming from the man of the hour, Mr. Jozsef "Got Nolans?" Szalontai.
  • Heck, I wish this was a proper improvement as well, but the health crosses all our plans. Nevertheless, Martin's new e4m2_030 is still one second faster than Markus' original demo, and deserves to be listed.
Friday, 28.02.2002
  • Jozsef stroke again - this time with e3m2_019, which means another decent second subtracted from the total QdQwav time.
  • However, this is not all of it yet. Thanks to the nice and very polite guys at the SDA Message Board we were kindly reminded of the e4m3_037 Markus did quite some time ago. This means gaining another three seconds, which makes... four in total. Good night.

  • Jozsef submitted some more of his mad QdQwav Kung-Fu - ladies and gents, make place for "Chthon done Dead" in 0:19!
One more second shaved off the holy Nightmare run!
Sunday, 03.02.2002
  • Valeriy made the first improvement to BHdQ, reducing the time for the Easy 100% demo on jzblue_3 to :11. This brings the time for the complete Easy 100% run down to 50 seconds.
  • Further improvements which result from demos sent to SDA are still on hold. Apologies to all for not having updated them yet.

Quake done Quick with a Vengeance

Quake done Quick with a Vengeance (QdQwav) is a straight run through Quake on Nightmare skill in 12:23. Since it's release, several improvements have been made:
  • e1m1 in 0:25 by Sergi Cami (one second faster)
  • e1m7 in 0:19 by Jozsef Szalontai (one second faster)
  • e2m3 in 0:16 by Jozsef Szalontai (two seconds faster)
  • e2m4 in 0:48 by Ingmar Poerner (three seconds faster)
  • e2m5 in 0:37 by Ingmar Poerner (one second faster)
  • e2m6 in 1:18 by Ingmar Poerner (one second faster)
  • e3m2 in 0:19 by Jozsef Szalontai (one second faster)
  • e3m5 in 0:36 by Jozsef Szalontai (one second faster)
  • e4m3 in 0:37 by Markus Taipale (three seconds faster)
  • e4m4 in 0:20 by Jozsef Szalnotai (two seconds faster)
The new time would be 12:07.

Then there are some demos with faster times which we could not use for some reason:

  • e1m2 in 0:32 by Sergi Cami (one second faster, leaves without armor)
  • e2m6 in 1:16 by Jozsef Szalontai (yet two seconds faster, does not get the rune)
  • e3m2 in 0:18 by Attila Csernyik (yet one second faster, does not get the grenade launcher)
  • e4m2 in 0:30 by Martin Selinus (one second faster, leaves with less health)
  • end in 0:18 by Ilkka Kurkela (fifteen! seconds faster, uses the hidden exit. However, the purpose of a game run is to finish the game (i.e. get to the finale screen) as fast as possible, and the hidden exit just brings you back to the start map - compare the reasons for taking the rune in e2m6.)

Quake done 100% Quicker

Quake done 100% Quicker (Qd100Qr) is a run through all of Quake on Nightmare skill, getting all the kills and secrets, in 59:31. The following demos improve on it:
  • e1m1 in 1:11 by Daniel Magnusson (two seconds faster)
  • e1m2 in 1:10 by Alexander Osipov (two seconds faster)
  • e1m3 in 1:52 by Kare Slettnes (ten seconds faster!)
  • e3m1 in 1:39 by Martin Selinus (four seconds faster)
  • e3m2 in 1:25 by Thomas Stubgaard (four seconds faster)
  • end in 1:57 by Valeriy Burmistrov (two seconds faster)
With these demos, the total time is 59:11.

There are two faster demos, but they don't fit:

  • e1m6 in 0:53 by Peter Horvath (three seconds, leaves with less health/armor)
  • e3m4 in 1:31 by Thomas Stubgaard (four seconds, takes the wrong exit)

The Rabbit Run

First we made Quake done Quick lite (QdQlite), a run through all of Quake on Easy skill in 14:06. Some months later, Ilkka Kurkela and others put together a new run making some drastic improvements to the original time, called The Rabbit Run. This release brought the QdQlite time down to 12:54. The time has since been improved even further, and work is going on to make a movie out of the best run.
  • e1m1 in :24 by Ilkka Kurkela (one second faster)
  • e2m2 in :36 by Peter Horvath (three seconds faster, very cool trick!)
  • e2m3 in :18 by Peter Horvath (two seconds faster)
  • e2m6 in 1:17 by Peter Horvath (three seconds faster!)
  • e3m4 in :29 by Ilkka Kurkela (one second faster)
  • e4m1 in :18 by Peter Horvath (six seconds faster!)
  • e4m3 in :44 by Ilkka Kurkela (four seconds faster)
  • end in :33 by Attila Csernyik (one second faster)
These demos reduce the time for The Rabbit Run to 12:33. More demos have been made, reducing the time even further, but we won't publish them until the release of Rabbit Run - The Movie.

Quake done 100% Quick lite

Quake done 100% Quick lite (Qd100Ql) goes through Quake on Easy skill, getting all the kills and secrets. The time for the released run was 42:25 to which the following improvements have been made.
  • e1m1 in 0:54 by Fabian Kollakowski (five seconds faster)
  • e1m2 in 0:51 by Peter Horvath (two seconds faster)
  • e1m4 in 1:04 by Peter Horvath (seven seconds faster)
  • e1m5 in 0:55 by Ilkka Kurkela (two seconds faster)
  • e2m2 in 1:00 by Markus Taipale (six seconds faster)
  • e3m1 in 1:15 by Marlo Galinski (seven seconds faster)
  • e3m2 in 0:59 by Martin Selinus (four seconds faster)
  • e4m1 in 1:00 by Ilkka Kurkela (two seconds faster)
  • e4m2 in 1:11 by Martin Selinus (two seconds faster)
  • e4m3 in 1:30 by Thomas Stubgaard (three seconds faster)
  • e4m4 in 2:04 by Ilkka Kurkela (six seconds faster)
  • e4m7 in 1:28 by Alam Riaz (seventeen seconds faster!)
With these demos, the total time for Qd100Ql would be 41:22. Currently, a project is underway to improve Qd100Ql. This means that this table no longer reflects the current fastest run and that further updates to this table will be delayed until the project is ready.

Quake done double Quick

Quake done double Quick (QddQ) is a coop-run by two players through Quake on Nightmare skill in 12:35 minutes.
  • e1m1 in :24 by Sergi Cami and Jordi Ros (three seconds faster)
With this demo, the total time is 12:32.

There are faster demos that are not suitable in a continuous run.

  • e2m1 in :07 by Attila Csernyik and Peter Horvath (two seconds faster, second player doesn't pick up the red armor)
  • e4m6 in :21 by Ilkka Kurkela and Juho Lärvi (one second faster, second player doesn't get the rocket launcher)
  • end in :16 by Attila Csernyik and Peter Horvath (fourteen seconds faster, uses the alternative exit)

Scourge done Slick

Scourge done Slick (SdS) finishes the Scourge of Armagon Mission Pack in 11:02 on Nightmare skill.
  • Ilkka has run episode 1 in Marathon style (all levels recorded in one take), and he managed to beat the time in SdS! Here are the improved maps:
    • hip1m1 in 0:25 (one second faster)
    • hip1m2 in 0:28 (two seconds faster)
    • hip1m3 in 1:11 (eight seconds faster, but see below)
Total time of his Marathon is 3:12, eight seconds faster than SdS, or rather ten if fractions are discarded.
  • hip1m3 in 0:50 by Ilkka Kurkela (29 seconds faster!)
  • hip2m1 in 0:32 by Justin Fleck (one second faster)
  • hip2m3 in 0:48 by Nolan Pflug (four seconds faster)
  • hip3m4 in 1:22 by Justin Fleck (five seconds faster)
Including these demos, the total time for Scourge on Nightmare yields 10:20.

The following demos are also faster than those in SdS:

  • hip1m1 in 0:19 by Ilkka Kurkela (yet six seconds, does not take the rocket launcher)
  • hip1m2 in 0:12 by Ilkka Kurkela (yet sixteen seconds, uses the secret exit)
  • hip2m2 in 0:30 by Justin Fleck (seven seconds!, misses the nailgun)
  • hip2m4 in 0:43 by Nolan Pflug (four seconds faster, leaves with less health)
  • hip3m1 in 0:53 by Justin Fleck (four seconds, leaves with less nails and rockets)
  • hip3m3 in 0:48 by Justin Fleck (one second, loses too much health)

Scourge done Slick lite

Scourge done Slick lite (SdSlite) is a run through Scourge of Armagon on Easy skill, time 8:20. So far, four of its demos have been improved:
  • hip1m1 in 0:17 by Jozsef Szalontai (one second faster)
  • hip1m3 in 1:03 by Ilkka Kurkela (one second faster)
  • hip2m1 in 0:18 by Jozsef Szalontai (one second faster)
  • hip2m2 in 0:26 by Jozsef Szalontai (two seconds faster)
The new time is 8:15.

There's another two faster demos, but they're not usable for an episode run.

  • hip1m2 in 0:12 by Ilkka Kurkela (ten seconds faster, uses the secret exit)
  • hip1m3 in 0:48 by Ilkka Kurkela (yet fifteen seconds faster, leaves with less health and armor)

Speed Beyond Belief

Speed Beyond Belief (sBB) is a run through Beyond Belief on Nightmare skill in 4:25.
  • bbelief1 in 0:16 by Alexander Osipov (three seconds faster)
  • bbelief2 in 0:16 by Ilkka Kurkela (seven seconds faster)
  • bbelief3 in 0:56 by Robert Axelsson (eighteen seconds faster!)
  • bbelief6 in 1:25 by Nolan Pflug (twelve seconds!, leaves without armour)
The improvement of bb3 and bb6 are is only possible in conjunction with slower demos on the following levels. Here's bb4 in 0:25, three seconds slower than SBB, but giving an advantage of ten seconds in total. Similarly this demo of bb7 in 0:12 is three seconds slower but gives us a nine second advantage overall. These improvements would bring the time down to 3:51.

There are also more demos that do not fit:

  • bbelief4 in 0:20 by Marlo Galinski (five seconds faster - two faster than SBB, uses too much health)
  • bbelief7 in 0:07 by Attila Csernyik (two seconds, does not collect the rune. We consider this to be a requirement for "completing" the episode - cf Episode 2 in id Quake.)

Speed Beyond Belief lite II

Speed Beyond Belief lite II (sBBlite2) is a run through Beyond Belief on Easy skill in 2:20. There have no further improvements been made so far, however there's one demo left which wouldn't fit into the whole run anymore:
  • bbelief7 in 0:07 by Attila Csernyik (two seconds faster, does not collect the rune. We consider this to be a requirement for "completing" the run - cf Episode 2 in id Quake.)

Speed Completely Beyond Belief

SCBB is a collection of 100% demos through Beyond Belief. The time on Easy skill is 12:33, and the time for Nightmare skill is 18:24.

Both of the bbelief1 slots have been improved but the resulting demos do not fit into the whole run:

  • Easy bbelief1 in 1:40 by Alexander Osipov (two seconds, leaves with less nails)
  • Nightmare bbelief1 in 1:59 by Alexander Osipov (three seconds, leaves with less nails)

Runner's Delight at Speedcon

RDSC is a cooperative run on Easy skill through the custom mission pack Runner's Delight. There is one single player demo which is faster than the two-player run in RDSC(!); we're not counting it as a proper improvement but we list it here for the sake of completeness:
  • rd1m4 in :31 by Ilkka Kurkela (one second faster)

Blue Hell done Quick

BHdQ contains two runs through the Blue Hell episode. We complete the episode in a mere 38 seconds on Nightmare and in 51 seconds on Easy skill, getting all kills and secrets in the latter. The follwing improvement is available:
  • Easy 100% of jzblue_3 in :11 by Valeriy Burmistrov (one second faster)

We decided to take all the runes in the maps even though you can complete some of them without taking a rune. This is the reason why the following faster demo does not fit:

  • Nightmare run of jzblue_3 in :03 by Jozsef Szalontai (three seconds faster, doesn't take the rune)
