The latest New Yorkers of the Week came up with a game plan to provide a safe place to play for young Brooklyn residents. NY1's Roma Torre filed the following report.

The Brooklyn Legendz are ready for some friendly competition. Their parents started East New York's only youth football team earlier this year.

"We want to help keep the crime rate down and if you don't continue to do things for children and keep them occupied, then they have a tendency to get into other things that in their future could be very damaging," said parent Crystal Chavis.

"We want the best for them," said Alicia Serrano, another parent. "We want them to experience it all, not only just in the streets, but as a team."

So far there are 20 players ranging in age from five to 15 years old. They are part of the American Youth Football league and will play their first game this fall.

It costs $1,200 a month to keep this team running. Parents not only support their children with their own money, they also donate their own time to organize fundraisers and even coach.

"We can't do it without the parents support," said parent Alvin Chavis. "Honestly, this is good for the parents as well because kids see that the parents are interacting."

"It definitely says the parents have great resiliency in this community," said Courtney Pollins, president of the New York City chapter of the American Youth Football league. "They are those who definitely want better for their children, which I think everybody in the city of New York wants. These people are not just saying they want better, but they're actually showing that."

The older players help the younger ones. And the coaches stress the importance of hard work both on and off the field.

But most of all, the team says its about having fun.

"They don't really care if you win or loose. They really want you to to win, but football is all about having fun," said player Jelani Oliver.

"I hope this team still goes on and it still passes on from a generation to another," said Alvin Chavis Jr., another player.

So for huddling together as community to support a healthy and safe alternative to the streets for their children, the parents of the Brooklyn Legendz are the New Yorkers of the Week.
