As promised a few weeks ago, Nintendo has scrapped its Wii-kly Download newsletter in favor of a new "Nintendo Download" letter which now incorporates both the Nintendo DSi and the Nintendo Wii. There are two pieces of DSiWare this week: Mixed Messages from Activision and Master of Illusion Express: Shuffle Games from Nintendo.
Wii owners get one new piece of WiiWare in the form of Tomy's Party Fun Pirate and an old platformer hits the Virtual Console: Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure from the Sega Genesis. Read More »
It seems as though initial sales figures for Rockstar's extremely well-received mature Nintendo DS game, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, were not as high as expected.
In a report from Gamasutra, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich said, "It appears the industry may have been over-zealous with initial expectations on how GTA: Chinatown Wars would perform based upon the news it had received one of the highest quality scores for a Nintendo DS title." Read More »
When our wealthy, well-spoken, and good-looking friends at Nintendo sent a new Nintendo DSi to GameSpy HQ, I immediately started putting it through the paces. The DS Lite is a perfectly competent platform; in fact, I use it far more than I do the Wii. I was thus quite curious as to why we should be transitioning to this new system, when the previous generation hasn't really started showing its age yet. So how does this newest piece of pocket gaming hardware stack up? Does the Internet browser work well? Are the twin cameras any good at snapping candid photographs? What exactly can you get for your 1000 free Nintendo Points? Read on for the answers to these questions and more. Read More »
The Nintendo DSi has sold extremely well in the western hemisphere. Sales figures totaled over 600,000 units sold in the first two days of combined availability for North America and Europe. GI.biz confirmed these figures with Nintendo today, while other outlets were quoting combined Western sales of only 300,000 units.
According to the news item, Nintendo has no plans to drop the price of the DS or the Nintendo Wii, even after Japanese sales figures for the Wii came in lower than those of the PlayStation 3 last month. Read More »
Rhythm Heaven's marketing might indicate that if you can tap your foot, you can play the game. But if that's all the rhythm you have it'll be a long, punishing road to completing the game. Even if you have the grace of a professional choreographer Nintendo's latest series of quirkily designed mini-games is gonna take some practice. On the other hand, its madcap blend of "tap 'n flick" games are some of the best seen on the DS. For every frustrating moment that makes you slam the DS shut, there are at least two more moments that will make you grin.
The game is based on a Japan-only GBA game that came out a few years back, and is a joint venture between Japanese pop star Tsunku and the minds behind the WarioWare games. If you've played any of those insane microgame compilations then you'll have some idea of how Rhythm Heaven works. If not, here's the basic idea: Each level is a series of brief mini-games. You work to master each mini-game, and at the end of each level you encounter a "remix," which shuffles the mini-games into a megamix of five- to 10-second-long microgames. At the end of each remix, you unlock the next level of diversions. Read More »
It's official: Nintendo's DSi is a smash-hit in the UK. Confirmed sales figures from GfK-ChartTrack state that the revamped handheld console sold 92,000 units during its launch weekend. MCV notes that this news makes the Nintendo DSi the fourth fastest-selling console in UK launch history; Wii, PlayStation 2 and PSP beat it out in this respect.
"'I would expect this launch to very much stimulate the DS software market,' said GfK-ChartTrack UK director Dorian Bloch." Read More »
It's Nintendo DSi day in Europe. The official launch of Nintendo's upgraded handheld console has arrived, and while North American gamers have to wait another 48 hours or so before they can get in on the action, it's likely that if you haven't pre-ordered a unit, it won't matter where in the world you live (apart from Japan, that is).
A press release from Nintendo of Europe indicates that the DSiWare Shop is also online, with the following being a few of the titles on offer: Read More »
April 5th is the day that will see the Nintendo DSi launch in North America. Word of pre-order programs being maxed out comes in days before the hardware hits the streets, but as a little extra bonus, Nintendo has today announced the first five DSiWare games that will be available via the DSi Shop on the same day:
"WarioWare: Snapped! -- Using the built-in Nintendo DSi camera, this outrageous title puts players right at the center of fast-paced mini-games, challenging them to race the clock and get a peek at Wario's photo album." Read More »
Nintendo's new Nintendo DSi hardware is enjoying more success at retail in Japan. For the week ending March 22nd, the improved handheld console sold over 71,000 units, making it the leader in hardware sales. The Sony PSP was bumped down into second place mainly due to the release of Super Robot Taisen K, which has sold over 120,000 since launch. Read More »
For a while there it looked as though western Nintendo DS gamers were only doing to get one game from the excellent Professor Layton series. Developed by Level-5, there are currently four titles in the series available in Japan. According to a report seen over on MTV Multiplayer, there's now cause of celebration, as the second game in the series -- Professor Layton and the Devil's Box -- has now been officially confirmed for release in North America and Europe. During his keynote speech at the 2009 Game Developers Conference, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata made a handful of specific announcements that went above and beyond simply addressing the development community. According to Iwata, existing Wii owners will be able to perform a system update today that will allow them to save downloaded WiiWare games, Virtual Console games, and Channels directly to High Capacity SD cards, in addition to SD memory cards. Games saved to SD cards can be launched from an SD Menu icon on the Wii menu. The other big announcement came in the form of the latest game in the storied Zelda series. Read More »
Gaming website Kombo has gotten some attention today by running a story which suggests that Nintendo is planning to offer classic Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games as downloads for its new DSi handheld. According to sources which recently attended the secretive Nintendo Developer Conference in London, England, Nintendo has big plans for its upcoming DSi handheld and potential developer applications for the platform. Develop published an article which alludes to a desire for developers creating short-form content for the DSi.
"The device includes access to the DS Shop and DSi Ware, but instead of emphasising game downloads - as has been done with previously with Wii/WiiWare - Nintendo is encouraging developers to think about making shorter 'applications,' both of a games and non-game variety for the DSi." Read More »
Can you miniaturize Grand Theft Auto? The question is moot -- it existed in miniature before GTA3 blew up the world with its mainstreaming of sandbox play. A more valid question is, can a GTA game on the DS, with all the attendant limitations and gimmicks, feel "real enough" to people like us today, people who just a few months ago were deep in GTA4? Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars says "yes." Simultaneously constrained and elevated by the limits of its platform, Chinatown Wars proves that the heart of the sandbox experience can thrive outside of a big-budget blockbuster. It also leads you to believe that it could teach its grand sibling a few tricks. Read More »
