Bionic Commando: What's Hot, What's Not

Xbox 360 Previews | Apr 14, 2009 02:53 PDT | Comment

At this point everyone knows Capcom's new Bionic Commando is about some guy who swings around with a mechanical arm, so I won't take time here to explain that. If you want to get more general information about the game, see our older previews. What I want to talk about is my first couple of hours with the game, and what I like (and dislike) so far.

I love that the new Bionic Commando continues the story of the original... at least to a degree. The original placed you in control of a bionic soldier named Ladd, who was trying to stop an evil organization and rescue Super Joe, the hero from the NES game Commando. The new game takes place 10 years after the events of the original, placing you in control of a new character who's been stripped of his bionics and thrown into prison for five years after the public turned against such things. He's freed only to combat a bionically aided terrorist group that has something to do with a woman he once loved. It sounds cheesy and cliche, and in a lot of ways it is, but it actually has all the makings for a great cheeseball action plot. Read More »

Since Halo 3 launched on the Xbox 360 (which was 565 days ago) there have apparently been 10 billion Covenant kills in the game's campaign mode. Yes, 10 billion. A post on Bungie.net by urk tells us that this amazing milestone was reached and breached over the past weekend.

A comedy list of factoids pertaining to that gargantuan figure reads as follows: Read More »

Hands-on with Saw: The Videogame

Xbox 360 Previews | Apr 13, 2009 12:16 PDT | Comment

When Brash Entertainment shuttered its doors, Konami purchased the rights to the Saw videogame it had been developing. And since Konami is the developer behind one of my most beloved horror franchises ever, Silent Hill, I was optimistic that it could turn Saw into a game worth playing. However, after my hands-on time with a demo, I can't help but feel like Saw is still very rough, and comes across a lot more like a movie cash-in rather than a quality title.

Saw obviously draws inspiration from the movies, taking some traps straight out of the films. In the first trap I played, for instance, I had to find a way to remove the "reverse bear-trap" -- made infamous in the first film -- from my head. It was actually a very deceptive puzzle, making me think all I had to do was move the analog stick on the controller. However, as I learned after a few deaths, I had to watch for subtle clues that showed me when I moved the stick correctly. The depth of the puzzle, in that it makes you think it's easy and then surprises you with its depth, really captures the diabolical feeling of the puzzles from the movies. Read More »

Six Days in Fallujah Preview

Xbox 360 Previews | Apr 13, 2009 11:17 PDT | Comment

It used to be that when soldiers would return home from fighting wars, a few would end up talking to film directors or authors, and their stories would be told on screen or in print. With the meteoric rise in videogaming's popularity over the past few years, it should come as no surprise that soldiers today are coming back home and opting instead to consult with game developers.

Konami's Six Days in Fallujah is an indicator of how in the future some of the most thought-provoking stories may be told interactively. After serving a tour of duty in Iraq, 47 American marines managed to come back home after taking part in the Second Battle of Fallujah, what the U.S. military called "some of the heaviest urban combat U.S. Marines have been involved in since the Battle of Hue City in Vietnam." Costing Halo 3 addicts 800 Microsoft Points (yes, that 10 bucks) the pack is possibly the last piece of DLC we'll see for Halo 3.

Greg Hart, VP of Video Games and Software for Amazon.com said, in regards to the store: "PC gamers have enjoyed the convenience of digital downloads on Amazon.com for some time. Hands-On With Prototype

Xbox 360 Previews | Apr 8, 2009 09:01 PDT | Comment

I'm late for the demo as I step into the dimly lit room. I've never seen Prototype before, but I'm excited to be here as it's the first time press are getting a chance to pick up and play as Alex Mercer, the game's protagonist. Here are a few things I've learned about Prototype now that I've had a chance to play it for myself...

New York City hasn't been replicated, but the team at Radical has created a decent approximation of the bustling metropolis. Most important though, they've created a city that's tailor-made to take advantage of Alex's ability to run up buildings, glide (yes, glide) through the air, and make staggeringly huge jumps. Most of the time travel is, for me, a big downside to open-world games. In Prototype, on the other hand, on-foot travel is so invigorating that it feels more enticing than any vehicular transportation or fast-travel could ever be. You may be travelling under the power of your own two legs, but goddamn are those two legs up to the task. Read More »

The Godfather II

Xbox 360 Reviews | Apr 7, 2009 06:00 PDT | Comment

Sonny Corleone was a hothead who shot first and never bothered asking questions. His intentions were good but his implementation sucked. His brother Michael, on the other hand, was a man who thought through everything and paid attention to details. He never pulled a gun unless he was going to use it, and when he did, he hit what he aimed at.

That's why Michael ended up as the Godfather and Sonny ended up in a pool of blood on the New Jersey Turnpike. As Michael himself might say, "Ideas are good but execution is everything." That brings us to The Godfather II, a game built around a great idea that ends up being more Sonny than Michael. Read More »

Dragon Age DLC to Appear For Up to Two Years

Xbox 360 News | Apr 7, 2009 11:51 PDT | Comment

MTV Multiplayer's Tracey John recently conducted an interview with BioWare Vice President Greg Zeschuk about DLC for the company's highly anticipated RPG, Dragon Age. Unlike Mass Effect, which only ever had one piece of DLC released, Zeschuk said that BioWare is planning content that, "will make the world even bigger and more interesting. It's not going to wreck it or break it."

As for how long fans can expect to see content? Zeschuk said that BioWare's DLC strategy will span "maybe a year and-a-half or two years," with the goal being "to make players feel like they're getting good value." If players are paying for it, "they should feel like they're getting something that really enhances the experience." Read More »
