BY RUSSELL GOAD, A INSIDER EXCLUSIVE:

97-98 Mudbugs (Season Roster)

42-20-7 91pts. 3-5 in playoffs knocking out Central Texas 3 games to 1 before being swept by the Ft.Worth Brahmas the Governor’s Cup Champions. All 4 losses were by a single goal and two of the games went into overtime. Played a 69 game season and finished second to Ft.Worth in Eastern Division of WPHL.

The league had two divisions with 7 teams in East and 5 in West. Mudbugs goalie Kevin St.Pierre led the league with 36 wins and 3 shutouts was voted Most Outstanding Goalie of the Year. Paul Jackson led team in scoring with 55 goals and 115pts. Brian Shantz was second in the league in assists with 82 also added 30 goals for Bugs. Jackson also had 9 game winning goals and 55 goals is still team record today.

October 16,1997
ARE YOU READY TO RUMMMMBLE!! Mr.Buffer gets crowd pumped for the Mudbugs 1st hockey game ever beating the Waco Wizards 4-2 . Scott Muscutt scored his 1st professional goal which was the game winner. Chris Nadeau scored the 1st goal in Mudbugs history.

October 23,1997
Dale Henry scored 1st Mudbugs hat trick vs Monroe in a 10-1 blowout. Capt. Hank had 3 goals 2 assist.

November 1,1997
Trevor Buchanan scored four goals in Waco most in a single game by any Mudbug during the season.

98-99 Mudbugs (Season Roster)

47-17-5 99pts. Eastern Division ,Governor,& President Cup Champions 11-1 in playoffs.
Mudbugs had 3 other teams from Louisiana in their division. Monroe,Alexandria, and Lake Charles were in Eastern Division along with teams in Little Rock and Tupelo. Dale Henry led league in shooting percentage .220 scoring 36 goals. Mudbugs broke a league record with 12 straight wins. Mudbugs won an incredible 36 of 39 games including an 11-1 playoff run. In the playoffs Monroe faced the Bugs 1st and were swept in 3. Next a very tough Ice Pirates team was eliminated in 5 games. John Vecchiarelli led the team in goals and points during season scoring 43 goals 46 assists in only 55 games.

The San Angelo Outlaws were destroyed in the finals. Mudbugs swept the Laws in 4 games out scoring their opponent 24-6. The famed 3 Amigo line was totally shutdown by the Mudbugs D. Outlaws goalie Chad Erickson led playoffs with 9 wins but none against Mudbugs. In game four in San Angelo the Armageddon Line of Capt.Hank,Forbie, and Andrew Power scored two goals in less than two minutes which started the party early for the lucky Bug fans in attendance. Johnny V. had 21pts in 12 games winning MVP of playoffs. Some of you may remember two Outlaw players were arrested in Bossier for stealing a taxi. True story. Would I make this up? What a season it was!!

January 22, 1999
Lose a franchise player. Gain a franchise. Michael Plaman, owner of the Shreveport Mudbugs, saw star player Doug Lawrence leave the team for personal reasons Thursday. But in the same 24 hours, he purchased the WPHL’s New Mexico Scorpions. Lawrence, the Mudbugs' leading scorer and the WPHL's second-best point producer, left the team to return to his home in Tulsa.

April 17, 1999
Already facing a 3-1 hole in the WPHL semifinal series with the Mudbugs, the last thing the Lake Charles Ice Pirates wanted to do was fall behind early in Game 5, let alone give up easy goals. Both scenarios came to fruition Friday as Toby Burkitt scored 54 seconds into the opening period, catapulting the Mudbugs to a 6-2 victory and into their first WPHL championship series.

June 6, 1999
The Shreveport Mudbugs are losing one of their talented goalies. Kevin St. Pierre is joining the Lubbock Cotton Kings after the WPHL’s newest team selected the goaltender in the expansion draft. He never played a game there.

99-00 Mudbugs (Season Roster)

44-19-7 95pts. Back2Back Eastern Division & President Cup Champions 11-3 in playoffs.
The Bugs got off to a terrible start losing 9 of their first 12 games. Three week road trip yielded 7pts in 11 games. This years team didn’t have the same scoring punch but the defense was even tougher allowing only 198 goals in 70 games. Chad Lang’s 2.46gaa was second in league behind Matt Barnes of CTX. Chad Lang led the league with 5 shutouts.

In late December the expansion Cotton Kings ranked number two by ITC came into the Swamp. This would be the beating of a lifetime as Mudbugs scored 7 goals on 12 shots in the 1st period. Final score Mudbugs won by a touchdown 10-3. This contest also included a one of Jim Sprott’s most infamous fights. The 7 goals in one period is still a team record.

Mudbugs out scored Ice Pirates in 1st round 11-2 in 3 games while sweeping their rivals in 3 games 2 which were shutouts. The Governor Cup Champion Stampede would be next.

Jim Sprott’s goal in OT in game one gave Bugs 3-2 win and series lead. In game 5 of series with CTX leading 2-0 late in 2nd period Stamps were on PP. Jason Campbell stole the show with 2 shorthanded goals in 17 seconds. Bugs would go on to score twice in 3rd eliminating CTX and Soupy would have a hat trick. Now only Scorpions could stop the defending Champions. After a huge blowout in game one Bugs winning 9-3. Scorpions would get the split and homeice for next 3 games.

Mudbugs down 2-1 after game 3 won the next two 5-1 and 5-2. Game 6 would be the last Mudbugs game ever played in the Hirsh Coliseum. Capt.Dale Henry scored the winner in OT to complete Back2back Championships. Hugo Hamelin was MVP in playoffs with a 1.96gaa 10 wins and a couple of shutouts. Toby Burkitt led team with 20pts with Jason Campbell getting 19pts.and 3 shorthanded goals. During the Finals 13 of 17 Bugs scored a goal while 12 of 18 Scorpions goals were scored by Todd Marcellas & Randy Murphy. Takes more than one good line to beat the Bugz.

November 5, 1999
A plan to split the Shreveport Mudbugs' home games between Hirsch Coliseum and the new Bossier City arena may not be dead. "The Mudbugs are willing to come in and divide the home dates up," Shreveport Mayor Keith Hightower said Thursday. "Both cities need to support one team. And if we start pitting the two venues against each other, there is a good chance another team will come in here and bankrupt both of them." WRONG not if Mudbugs keep ECHL out of Bossier birdbrain!!

November 11, 1999
He's been with the team for just over a week, but already Carl Menard is one of the Mudbugs' top offensive producers. In only four games with the Mudbugs, Menard's 11 points (six goals and five assists) rank second on the team. His best game in terms of point production came in his first game with the team, dishing out four assists in a 6-2 victory over San Angelo Nov. 2. Two games later, he added a hat trick in a 6-4 loss.

November 12, 1999
Friday's 5-3 loss to Fort Worth was particularly frustrating for the Mudbugs considering they outshot and outworked the Brahmas throughout the game. Even more frustrating is the fact that the game was the Mudbugs' home opener in front of their fans, who had been waiting for the Bugs to return from an 11-game road trip.

November 13, 1999
Behind a spectacular 29-save performance from goaltender Hugo Hamelin, the Mudbugs beat the GlacierCats 4-1 Saturday night at Hirsch Coliseum for their first home win of the season.

November 20, 1999
Shreveport goaltender Hugo Hamelin isn't one to brag. After his performance Saturday night, he's got reason to gloat. In a penalty-filled game, the Mudbugs defeated Arkansas 2-1 to extend its winning streak to four games and earn its third win in three days. The win was the Mudbugs' second over the GlacierCats in a week and moved them past Arkansas for fourth place in the Eastern Division.

November 26, 1999
Sometimes, no matter what a team does, one opponent always has its number. The Monroe Moccasins may be the Shreveport Mudbugs' nemesis this season. Despite outshooting the Moccasins 34-16 and dominating the play for much of the game, the Mudbugs lost to Monroe 3-2 in a shootout Friday. The loss was the Mudbugs' second straight to the Moccasins and the third this season to the Monroe team. The Mudbugs remain winless against the Moccasins.

December 4, 1999
The steep climb from the lower ranks of the WPHL's Eastern Division continues for the Shreveport Mudbugs. Shreveport Capt. Dale Henry had three assists as the Mudbugs won their fourth straight game, beating Lake Charles 4-3 at Hirsch Coliseum Friday. Henry's two linemates, Trevor Buchanan and Toby Burkitt, each had a goal and an assist as well. The win moves the Mudbugs into sole possession of third place in the Eastern Division.

December 5, 1999
The Mudbugs extended their winning streak to five games, their longest of the season, beating Alexandria 5-2 at Hirsch Coliseum Saturday. The win keeps Shreveport in third place and on pace with Eastern Division leaders Monroe and Lake Charles.

December 9, 1999
When Shreveport Mudbugs coach Jean Laforest looks back over the 1999-2000 season, there's usually a handful of games which can make or break a season. Tuesday's win over Eastern Division front-runner Monroe will be one of those games which could make the Mudbugs' season. The Mudbugs beat the Moccasins 5-2 in Monroe and jumped over Lake Charles for second place in the Eastern Division. The win was the Mudbugs 1st over Monroe in four games.

December 10, 1999
Shreveport extends win streak to seven with 5-3 victory against Tupelo. The Mudbugs extended their winning streak to seven games, beating Tupelo 5-3 at Hirsch Coliseum Thursday. The win puts the Mudbugs in first place of the Eastern Division.

December 12, 1999
The Shreveport Mudbugs and the Monroe Moccasins battle for first place in the Eastern Division of the WPHL. Two third period goals, help Monroe claimed 1st place once again.

December 16, 1999
Since its inception four years ago, the WPHL has expanded swiftly from its original six teams to 18 teams. Whether the result of rapid expansion, poor ownership or the league's lack of foresight, two WPHL teams will not finish the 1999-2000 season. The league suspended operations for the Abilene Aviators and the Waco Wizards franchises through the rest of the season on Wednesday.

December 19, 1999
Stefan Simoes scored a hat trick Saturday as the Mudbugs defeated the Warthogs 6-1 at Hirsch Coliseum. The win was the Mudbugs' third straight and 10th in 12 games, securing a tie for first place with Monroe in the Eastern Division. In his first 10 games with the Mudbugs, forward Stephan Simoes has made quite an impact on the Shreveport offense. The 26-year-old has seven goals and eight assists for an average of 1.5 points per game.

February 11, 2000
The Shreveport Mudbugs can’t wait to get into their new home, the CTC, for the 2000-2001 season. Maybe then they can finally get some quality practice time without having to zig-zag across the state looking for ice. The Bugs had Tuesday off as workers prepared Hirsch Coliseum for the "Champions on Ice" figure skating show. The team then loaded up the team bus Wednesday for practice in Alexandria and for practice in Monroe today. Ahhh the good ole days!

March 8, 2000
Whenever the Mudbugs beat their I-20 rivals from Monroe, it's a reason to get excited. But when the victory over the Moccasins ensures the Mudbugs a spot in the playoffs, it's worth celebrating. The Mudbugs had several options to secure a spot in the playoffs, but beating Monroe was certainly the most gratifying way to do it.

March 23, 2000
Mudbugs sign contract with CTC. ECHL will NOT be coming to Bossier. There are still a handful of games left in the Shreveport Mudbugs' regular season, but their fans already are eager for the 2000-2001 campaign. Promised a home in the Bossier City Arena by Bossier City Mayor George Dement in January, the Mudbugs ensured their place in the new building Wednesday. This may have been the biggest win of the season! Thanks Mayor Dement you made the right choice.

April 3, 2000
The Shreveport Mudbugs can thank blurred vision for their victory Sunday. Shreveport erased a two-goal deficit in the third period, rallying to defeat the Lake Charles Ice Pirates 3-2 at Hirsch Coliseum. The Mudbugs lead the best-of-5 second round series 1-0. A broken nose suffered in practice Thursday forced Charles Poulin to wear the plastic visor as protection in Game 1. Chainsaw Charlie!

June 27, 2000
Shreveport Mudbug Scott Muscutt has skated his last shift, blocked his last shot and scored his last goal. He won't be leading his team on the ice any more. Instead, he'll be behind the bench. Two sources within the Mudbugs organization confirmed Muscutt will be named the Mudbugs' new head coach at a 3 p.m. press conference today.

00-01 Mudbugs (Season Roster)

45-21-5 95pts. 3-Time President Cup Champions 12-2 in playoffs
New arena, New name, New coach the Bossier Shreveport Mudbugs two-time defending Champions now play next to the Red River in the brand new CenturyTel Center in Bossier City,La.

Mudbugs were the only team to have over 90pts in 4 straight seasons.Bugs allowed only 172 goals best in the league and new team record. Mark Rupnow scored 45 goals second best in team history. Kenny Carroll was named Rookie of the Year & Outstanding Goalie of the Year.

In what was one of the best ever playoff series the Mudbugs swept the Austin Icebats in 4 straight. But this wasn’t easy by any means. Games one, two, and three were all OT classics won 3-2 with three different Mudbugs stepping up in each game.

Capt. Hank, Dan Wildfong, and Forbes McPherson taking turns knocking off the winged rodents. After the 3rd time it appeared too much for Bats goalie McMullen as he refused to leave the ice in disbelief or just plain stunned. Next up would be Tupelo T-Rex a scoring machine that the Bugs had finished second to in the division. The Governor Cup Champions would open up with a 5-4 victory over Bugs in game one in Tupelo. Game two was all Mudbugs as Kenny Carroll shutout the nasty green lizards 4-zip. Mudbugs cruised in game three winning 6-3.

The pivotal game 4 would go into OT tied 2-2. There’s a huge difference between 3-1 lead and series tied at 2-2 not to mention another long bus ride to Tupelo. Well Forbes McPherson wasn’t having none of that nailing the winner in OT. Bugs fought off lizards to win series 4 games to 1 winning by a 3-2 score once again. Knocking out Tupelo also won the Mudbugs homeice in the Finals vs CottonKings. Lance Leslie the CottonKings netminder was hottest in the playoffs coming into Finals with an incredible 1.01gaa. Mudbugs turned poor ole Lance into a huge sieve in games one & two beating the C-Kings twice out scoring them 9-1. The next 3 games would be in Lubbock. The C-Kings would take game 3 by a 3-1 score.

Kenny Carroll had started 12 straight games so for game 4 Chad Lang would get the start. Chad had one of his best games of the season allowing only a single goal on 29 shots as Bugs flipped the 3-1 score on the Queens. About 500 Mudbugs fans were in Lubbock to see Mudbugs make history in game 5. Kenny made 24 saves and Bugs won their 3rd President’s Cup 4-zip. Jason Campbell scored a goal and had 2 helpers. Soupy got MVP with 18pts Ken Carroll had a 1.74gaa 11 wins and 3 shutouts…not bad for a rookie eh? Still stands as best post season performance by a Mudbugs goalie. Kyle Reeves Lubbock’s leading scorer was suspended for one year for assaulting ref after game 4. DUMB!!

Jim Sprott, Trevor Buchanan, Dale Henry and Tony Bergin became the only players in WPHL history to win 3 Championships. Scott Muscutt was the only person to win as a player and a coach. Also was the 1st coach to win a championship in his rookie year. With their third straight championship last season, the Mudbugs are one of only four teams in professional minor league hockey to accomplish the feat. The only one to do it in only 4 years as a franchise.September 27, 2000
Carroll, Wildfong, MacPherson invited to IHL's Kansas City training camp. The path paved by former Shreveport Mudbugs defenseman Wade Simpson and maintained by head coach Scott Muscutt has led to three current Mudbugs getting an invitation to the Kansas City Blades training camp.

The first hurdle is always the toughest to clear and the Mudbugs are very aware of that, especially after how the team started last season, losing nine of their first 12 games. It's a lesson well learned apparently. The Mudbugs swarmed the retooled Tupelo T-Rex 5-1 Oct. 12, ripped Lake Charles 5-3 Oct. 13 and rallied to beat Central Texas 3-2 in a shootout. Mark Rupnow scored twice to erased a 2-0 lead in 3rd period to send game to shootout. Toby Burkitt & Soupy scored in shootout while Kenny stopped all 4 CTX shooters he faced. It was the rematch Stamps fans had been waiting for but Bugs had last laugh again.

October 14, 2000
Franchise did not meet minimum sales standards. No sooner has the 2000-2001 Western Professional Hockey League season started than the league has faced yet other franchise ownership setback. The league announced Friday the Tucson Scorch, the only expansion team this season, will not compete in the 2000-2001 season because the organization did not meet league minimum standards in season ticket or corporate partnership.

October 21,2000
Ken Carroll vs Clint Owen in Monroe 1-1 game went to shootout. Derek McKinley the 10th Mudbug shooter finally was able to beat Owen over his shoulder for the winner. Kenny had 39 saves in his second shootout win. Mudbugs win 2-1. After watching this one you knew this was no ordinary rookie.

November 17, 2000
Dale Henry becomes 1st Mudbug to score 100 goals with team in game vs Bats.

December 9, 2000
Injuries have so decimated the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs lineup, head coach Scott Muscutt had to bring in not just one, but two goaltenders for Friday's game against Lake Charles. Rick Nichol, gets the start in net Friday for the Mudbugs. Terry Craven, who was in Lake Charles' training camp last season, served as the backup. The Mudbugs regular goalies Chad Lang and Ken Carroll have been banged up.

January 12, 2001
Central Texas Stampede fold. "It is frustrating there's no question about that," Muscutt said. "It's very, very unfortunate now in the middle of the year.

February 18, 2001
Many fans oppose team's name change Readers respond Thursday, the El Paso Buzzards changed their name to the El Paso Cow Pattys. The El Paso Times asked readers what they thought of the team's new name. Here are some of the responses. The name change is a disgrace to El Paso, the Buzzard players, the fans and the organization. Who wants to be compared to cow feces? The people in charge of the organization did not think this through -- and if they did, that scares me.

After a couple of games the team changed their name back but the Cow Pattys were undefeated. Maybe because they hated their jerseys or the other teams were laughing so hard they couldn’t play.

May 31, 2001
The Western Professional Hockey League, home to the Mudbugs, and the Central Hockey League announced a joint operating agreement, effectively mergering the leagues for the 2001-2002 season. The leagues met in Oklahoma City Wednesday to announce the agreement.

01-02 Mudbugs (Season Roster)

33-27-4 70pts. Mudbugs begin their 1st CHL season, 64 game season. Finished second to Memphis in Northeast Division and 3rd in the Conference. Mudbugs were 6-5 in playoffs.

In mid January Bugs were playing .500 hockey with a record of 17-17-2 in 3rd place behind Memphis & Ft.Worth. Other teams fans were saying Mudbugs didn’t have a chance of making post season play. But we know better, where there’s a Bug there’s a way. Mudbugs passed Ft.Worth to finish 3rd in Northern Conference and setup a 1st round matchup of two defending Champions.

The Three Time WPHL Champions would face OKC Blazers the defending CHL Champions. Blazers took lead in series on homeice but in game 2 Mudbugs took Blazers into OT 3-3 . What happened was the fastest Blazer loss in team history! 13 seconds into OT Luke Earl stole puck in Blazer end and series was tied just like that. Coach Sauter whinned about Earl being an illegal player for weeks. The loss seemed to take some of that Blazer magic right out of their building. Game three in CTC was another OT classic with Tony Bergin doing the honors. Bugs would roll over Blazers 4-1 ending any chance of a repeat and winning the battle of Champions 3 games to 1.

Next would be our new CHL rival Memphis Riverkings. Memphis would take a 2-0 lead in series scoring 10 goals in two games. Mudbugs would rebound and take next two games. Game 5 in Memphis would go into OT with Riverkings taking command of series with a 3-2 win. But once again Mudbugs would fight back winning game 6 in the CTC 4-2 and for the 1st time ever Mudbugs would play a Game 7. Memphis would return the favor in the final contest winning 4-2 and ending Mudbugs chance for a 4th consecutive President Cup Championship. Just another reason Bug fans love to see a win over Memphis.

December 9, 2001
Campbell's hat trick sparks Mudbugs to win over Corpus 4-2.

December 10, 2001
Team notches back-to-back wins for first time in nearly a month. Defenseman Pat Powers' goal at the 1:30 mark of overtime gave the Mudbugs a 3-2 win over the Corpus Christi IceRays at the CTC.

December 30, 2001
On the eve of their longest road trip of the season, the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs had a great chance to get it started in the right fashion, taking on the Fort Worth Brahmas at the CenturyTel Center on Saturday. All except for one person - Fort Worth goaltender Kory Cooper. Cooper set a new league mark this season, making 55 saves in the Brahmas' 3-1 victory over the Mudbugs. Stuff happens!!

January 19, 2002
Coach Muscutt signed goaltender Jonathan Forest, winger Ryan Davis and defenseman Craig Minard shortly into their six-game road trip.

January 25, 2002
The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Dan Wildfong had two goals, including the game winner 50 seconds into overtime, and an assist in the Mudbugs' 4-3 comeback victory over the Southeast Division leading Ice Bats at the CenturyTel Center.

February 11, 200
The Mudbugs clawed, scrapped and fought their way from a four-goal deficit to tie Memphis with 18 seconds left, only to lose in overtime, 5-4, at the CenturyTel Center on Sunday. Great comeback!!

March 6, 2002
Fighting for the postseason, the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs came up with a determined effort against the Memphis RiverKings on Tuesday. Twice the Mudbugs trailed by two goals only to rally in the third period and defeat the Memphis RiverKings 6-5 in overtime at the CenturyTel Center on Tuesday. Jason Campbell scored the game-winning goal 57 seconds into the overtime period, sliding the puck past Memphis goaltender Mark Richards. Better ending to this story eh?

March 16, 2002
The Mudbugs survived a couple of early Wichita scoring chances to rout the Thunder 5-1 at the CTC in front of 6,441 fans, the largest crowd of the season since the home opener. The Mudbugs needed a win and a Tulsa loss on Friday to clinch a postseason spot. Down went the Oilers.

May 3, 2002
Ken Carroll comes back to Bossier-Shreveport. Reloading for next season.

September 28, 2002
NHL comes to CTC Nashville vs Atlanta.

02-03 Mudbugs (Season Roster)

33-22-9 75pts Bugs finished season in 3rd behind Indy and Memphis while missing post season play for the first time in franchise history. Between Jan.16 & Feb.20 Mudbugs were unbeatable going 14-1 during that stretch. Dan Wildfong led team in points with 66pts with Forbie a close second scoring 28 goals 33 assists and 4 shorthanded goals. Chris Brassard and Chad Spurr missed 19 & 17 games total thanks to hand injuries received in pre-season game with Brahmas. Most likely costing team that playoff spot. Well I like to blame them for it anyhow.

October 3, 2002
John Madden takes over as Mudbugs new owner.

October 17, 2002
The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs' eliminated from the CHL playoffs last season by Memphis. Two 3rd period goals by Dan Wildfong and Jason Campbell's game-winning goal with 6.2 seconds left get season off to good start. Mudbugs win season opener over Memphis. With the start of the 2002-03 CHL season come a few new changes. The most visible new change was the installation of a safety net behind the goals. Also notice some defending Champions will open season against a team they eliminated. That’s why I respect the Turtles. Not like those Bucks

October 26, 2002
At the end of the season, the Mudbugs' 5-3 win over Tulsa at the CTC on Thursday will just be one more mark in their win column. For the team, the win was more important than it may appear at first glance. Forbes MacPherson played in his first game of the 2002-03 season, Trevor Buchanan scored career points Nos. 600 and 601.

November 14, 2002
The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs scored three times in the third period, only to have Wichita tie the game on an incredible fluke of a goal and then win the game in a shootout, 7-6, at the CenturyTel Center on Thursday. The Mudbugs, who trailed for the majority of the first two periods, rallied in the third period from a 5-3 deficit to take a 6-5 lead. Blunder ruin what was a great comeback.

December 6, 2002
Tony Bergin scored the game-winning goal with 1:57 remaining in the contest and Forbie added an empty-net score in the closing seconds to finally snap the Mudbugs' seven-game losing slide, beating the Fort Worth Brahmas, 3-1, at the CTC on Friday. The victory was the first at home for the team since Oct. 31. Mark Rupnow was put on season ending IR.

January 16, 2003
The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs climb back up the Northeast Division standings took a small step forward on Thursday. Forbes MacPherson got the hat trick to lead the Mudbugs' attack in an 8-0 shellacking of San Angelo at the CTC. Mudbugs goaltender Ken Carroll stopped all of San Angelo's 34 shots for the win and his second shutout of the season.

January 21, 2003
For the first time all season, the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs have a winning streak. The Mudbugs won their third straight game, dispatching Fort Worth, 7-2, at the CTC on Tuesday. Mudbugs goaltender Jonathan Forest stopped 22 of Fort Worth's 24 shots, earning his first win since Dec. 27. Forbes MacPherson had two goals and two assists.

February 1, 2003
The Mudbugs' charge to the playoffs continues. Behind a pair of goals from defenseman Tony Bergin, the Mudbugs upended Austin, the best team in the CHL, 3-0, at the CTC on Saturday. Trevor Buchanan had the other goal for Bugs a slapshot from the right wing.

February 2, 2003
Forbes MacPherson scored three goals, including his third short-handed goal of the season, and added an assist, leading the Mudbugs to an 8-1 thumping of the Fort Worth Brahmas at the CTC on Sunday. Bossier-Shreveport has won eight of its last nine games. Jason Campbell had three assists.

February 14, 2003
Several players battled the flu for Friday's game with the defending CHL champion Memphis RiverKings, and yet, somehow, the Mudbugs came out with an important 5-3 win. The win also keeps the Mudbugs right on the heels of the RiverKings for the final playoff spot.

February 22, 2003
Remember all those breaks the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs weren't getting at the start of the season? Well, they're getting them all now. After Friday's minor setback, a shootout loss to Fort Worth,Mudbugs responded by getting their 10th win in last 11 games, defeating the Corpus Christi Rayz, 4-1.

March 9, 2003
Defensemen aren't supposed to score goals. They aren't supposed to save seasons either. They do all of the grunt work and get none of the glory. A flick of the wrist from Craig Minard not only gave the Mudbugs a spectacular 3-2 shootout win over Austin at the CTC on Sunday, but kept their playoff hopes afloat at least for one more game.

March 12, 2003
Campbell placed on 45-day injured reserve with rib injury. The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs lost a key member of the team and subsequently placed forward Jason Campbell, one of the team's top scorers, on the 45-day injured reserve over the weekend. Campbell was third on the team in scoring (25 goals, 26 assists), but was one of the team's top face-off men and an important part of the Mudbugs' penalty-kill unit, which ranks sixth in the CHL.

March 14, 2003
First time out Amarillo ends Mudbugs' playoff hopes. The largest CTC crowd of the season (6,614) left the arena bewildered as to how the Mudbugs, who had had battled so hard to get back into contention for a playoff spot, could play with so little spark against the Amarillo Gorillas.

March 15, 2003
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs gave their faithful fans one last celebration to hold them over the long summer. With their playoff hopes dashed after losing to Amarillo on Friday, it would be understandable if the Mudbugs simply dismissed their game with Laredo on Saturday. Through the first 40 minutes of play, it appeared as if they were doing just that. But three 3rd period goals the game winner coming with 2:34 left from Tony Bergin would send Laredo away from CTC without points again. This would be Tony’s last goal as a Mudbug becoming a victim of the CHL vet rule the next season.

03-04 Mudbugs (Season Roster)

42-16-6 90pts Northeast Division & Northern Conference Champions 10-6-1 playoffs
Mudbugs win 1st Division title since merger with CHL. Mudbugs defense set a new team record allowing only 146 goals. Ken Carroll & Jeff Blair combined for 7 shutouts and were two of the best in the CHL. Kenny had a 2.17gaa while Jeff’s 2.29gaa ranked him near the top also. Chad Spurr led team in goals scored with 31 also tallied 4 shorthanded markers. Chris Brassard led team in points with 75.

The Thriple C line of Chris Brassard,Chad Spurr, and Craig Soke were a real force in the CHL. Mudbugs were voted ‘Hardest Working Team” in CHL. The team set a new record for home wins with 15 straight. Mudbugs .703 winning percentage was second best in franchise history.

Mudbugs faced Northeast Division rival Indianapolis Ice in 1st round of playoffs. Game 1 Mudbugs Dan Wildfong scores twice in a 3-2 win. Game 2 Craig Minard ties game in 3rd period at 3-3 . Just 50 seconds into OT Chris Brassard gives Mudbugs a commanding 2-0 series lead. The next weekend Indy battles back taking both games and forcing a game 5 at the CTC. Dan Wildfong had his nose broken from nasty crosscheck by Ice player Jim Shepperd. In a very emotional game 5 Ryan Manitowich would get it started 4 minutes in with 1st goal of game. Craig Soke added a pp goal in second period to increase lead to 2-0. The Triple C’s line would add another goal in 3rd by Chris Brassard for a 3-0 lead. Ken Carroll came within 66 seconds of another playoff shutout as Mudbugs eliminated Ice with 3-1 win. Mudbugs PK unit was a perfect 10 for 10 in game 5.

Mudbugs next challenge would be Wichita Thunder,a team that pulled off the biggest upset in CHL playoffs knocking off the Colorado Eagles in 1st round 3 games to 1.

Game 1 saw 5 different Mudbugs score goals in a 5-3 Bugs victory in CTC. Quite a performance considering all the emotions of that afternoon learning their owner John Madden had lost his sister to a murder-suicide. After their win the whole team skated over to give game puck and salute Mr.Madden.

Game 2 would turn out to be the longest playoff game in Mudbugs playoff history. Travis Bell scored in 3rd period to send game into OT. The defenses dominated this contest with the goalies combining to make 87 saves. Finally in 3rd OT team captain Jim Sprott went coast to coast splitting two Thunder defensemen scoring a huge goal and giving Bugs a 2-0 lead in series. Jeff Blair was amazing in net stopping 38 of 39 shots. After a split in Wichita Mudbugs returned home for game 5 with a 3-1 series lead.

Game 5 was Mudbugs hockey at it’s finest. 4 different players scored goals and Ken Carroll made 29 saves in a 4-0 Mudbugs win. Jim Sprott, Dan Wildfong, Craig Soke with Forbes MacPherson adding a shorthanded goal in 3rd were more than enough for Kenny on this evening. Mudbugs moving on to the Finals for the 1st time since joining CHL. The Governor Cup Champion Laredo Bucks were next for the teal & black.

Travis Bell would give Bugs their only goal and lead in game 1 as Bucks roll to 3-1 win in Laredo. Mudbugs would tie series with 4 different players netting goals in a 4-2 win in Laredo. Ken Carroll stopped 30 of 32 shots. Mudbugs headed home for games 3, 4 and 5.

Forbes MacPherson scored the only goal of game in 3rd period and Ken Carroll made 23 saves for another post season shutout. Bugs take 2-1 series lead. Game 4 would be Forbie and Kenny shining again. Ken Carroll stopping 34 of 35 Buck shots. Forbes MacPherson scoring game winning goal in OT just 58 seconds into period. Bugs took a 3-1 lead in series with a chance to win Championship on homeice for only the second time in their seven year history.

Game 5 Bucks take 3-1 lead into 3rd period before Dan Wildfong scores to close gap to 3-2. However James Hiebert score with less than 4 minutes remaining would send the Bugs back to south Texas with a 3-2 series lead. Game 6 was all Laredo as Bucks jumped all over Mudbugs in 1st period with 3 goals. Chad Spurr would score the lone Bugs goal in a 5-1 loss setting up the second 7th game in Mudbugs playoff history.

Unlike the 1st one vs Memphis this one wouldn’t be settled on the ice. Controversy and chaos ruled in Laredo,Texas costing one of best Mudbugs team ever their rightful place in the CHL recordbook. Thus for my personal record of the events taking place in CHL Finals 2004 Mudbugs finish 3-3-1. That’s the way I see it.

October 15, 2003
Everyone knew a tough decision had to be made. Tuesday it came. Tony Bergin, perennially one of the best defensemen in the CHL was cut after playing 299 games with the Mudbugs. Bergin is second all-time in scoring for Mudbugs defensemen and third in games played. Miss ya Tony!

October 18, 2003
Trevor Buchanan, David Oliver and Jason Campbell are back together again. In the season-opening 5-2 victory against Wichita, Buchanan scored a pair of goals and an assist while Campbell notched a goal and two assists. Oliver collected three assists that night.

November 11, 2003
Things looked bleak for the Mudbugs after two periods Tuesday night, trailing 1-0 to the Indianapolis Ice and facing a 5-on-3 disadvantage to start the final period. But a crucial penalty kill sparked an emotional comeback and a pair of third-period goals helped the Mudbugs beat their Northeast Division rivals and the referee - 2-1. Ryan Manitowich and David Oliver scored the goals.

November 14, 2003
Ken Carroll became the all-time leader in wins for the Mudbugs franchise Friday night as he stopped six of seven shots in a shootout win over the Oilers at the CTC.

November 20, 2003
The Mudbugs lost their starting goaltender less than four minutes into the game Thursday night - not good news when you're playing at Memphis, the toughest building in the Central Hockey League. Nevertheless, the Bugs dominated the play, handed Memphis its first home loss and extended their winning streak to six with a 3-0 victory. David Haun, a recent acquisition from Austin, went down after making four saves enter Ken Carroll in for relief.

December 5, 2003
Mudbugs sign Jeff Blair acquired from Odessa. This would prove to be huge later in season.

January 18, 2004

February 20, 2004

March 14, 2004
Jeff Blair shutouts KillerBees 1-0 making 34 saves.

04-05 Mudbugs (Season Roster)

36-17-7 79pts Northeast Division Champions
Dan Wildfong led team in goals scored with 32 and points with 69. Chris Brassard close behind with 29 goals and rookie Scott Sheppard had 27 and his 1st pro hat trick. Ken Carroll another great season 24-11-2 with a 2.12gaa with 3 shutouts. The Bugs scored less than 200 goals for the 1st time in team history.

Playoffs begin with Thunder. Kenny Carroll picks up his 6th shutout in post season play making Craig Soke's goal in 3rd period the game winner..Bugs win 1-zip. Game two Thunder roll out to 3-0 lead in 1st period but Bugs score twice to cut lead to one after one. Then 11 seconds into 2nd period Forbie ties game @ 3. Blake Forsyth gives Thunder lead again 4-3 with Jason Duda adding a shorthanded goal a minute later. Wichita adds an empty netter to even series with a 6-3 win.

Game 3 in Wichita 3rd game in 3 nights Mudbugs would be shutout for the 1st time ever in playoffs losing 1-0 despite putting 36 SOG against Thunder goalie Jason Flick.Jeff Blair took the loss but played a super game. Both coaches were involved in a bench clearing brawl on the ice after the game and were suspended by CHL for rest of the series.Dan Wildfong will miss game 4 also. Game4 in Wichita on April Fools Day, Mudbugs 80% on PP has Chris Brassard equals Johnny V team record of 4 goals in a playoff game but it wasn't enough to stop Thunder.

Thunder roll 7-4 behind a Travis Clayton hat trick. Game 5 Mudbugs facing elimination for the 1st time ever in 1st round Dan Wildfong breaks the deadlock with 3rd period goal. Joe Blaznek would tie game with 4:08 left sending game into OT. Midway thru the 2nd OT Shane Palahicky would send series back to Bossier City with a huge OT winner. Game 6 Forbie & Shane give Bugs a 2-0 lead going into 3rd period. For the 2nd game in a row Joe Blaznek would stop Kenny Carroll's shutout bid late in the 3rd period. But no OT tonight has Capt.Forbie nails empty net goal with 42 seconds left to force a game 7.

Game 7 Bugs would strike 1st with Capt.Forbie scoring in 2nd period. Esdale pp goal would tie game going into the 3rd. Both teams played tight defense allowing only 9 shots total in period. Mudbugs season would end 20 seconds into OT when Scott Allison flipped a puck over Carroll's shoulder. The Thunder were the 1st team to shutout Bugs in a playoff game and 1st to eliminate Mudbugs in 1st round ever.

July 23, 2004
Mudbugs may open season at home against Fort Worth instead. Hopes of the marquee matchup many hoped would kick off the 2004-05 CHL season has officially melted in the sweltering heat of Laredo, Texas. The defending league champion Laredo Bucks declined an opportunity to begin their quest for back-to-back titles Oct. 22 in Bossier City. Gutless cowards, oh well you can run but you can’t hide.

November 11, 2004
More overtime hockey Thursday in Laredo, Texas, and the score, again, was 2-2. After a Laredo Bucks shot was sent toward Mudbugs goalie Ken Carroll, the goal light came on, the horn sounded and the crowd went crazy. But it wasn't a goal. Go figure. This time the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs were able to overcome the premature celebration and pull out a 3-2 shootout victory against Laredo in the teams' first meeting since last years Cup Finals. Dan Wildfong scores winner in shootout. See even in LEC you can’t hide.

November 18, 2004
The CHL introduced Herb Washington as owner of the CHL franchise that will begin play in fall of 2005 in Youngstown, Ohio. Washington, a highly successful businessman in the Youngstown area, has established an office and will begin operations immediately in preparation for the 2005-2006 season. This isn’t a good idea have they forgotten the Indy Ice project.

November 23, 2004
Mudbugs rally in third period for 3-1 victory over RiverKings. Bossier-Shreveport's Brett Smith broke a tie with his third-period goal and Chris Brassard added an empty-net goal for a 3-1 Mudbugs win over Memphis here on Tuesday night.

Mudbugs scored three times in the third period and Ken Carroll turned away 33 shots to lead the team to a 3-1 victory over the Tulsa Oilers here on Saturday night. Scott Sheppard & Forbie scored in shootout to complete another great 3rd period comeback.

January 8, 2005
For 65 minutes of hockey and four rounds of a shootout, Oklahoma City goaltender Kasey Moreland looked as if he was going to write a dream script for his debut in professional hockey. But Dan Wildfong isn't a fan of sappy stories. Wildfong scored his second goal of the night and 20th of the season as the sixth Mudbug in a shootout and Ken Carroll stopped the Blazers' final shooter as the Mudbugs rallied for another big road win.

January 21, 2005
Ryan Manitowich scored the game-winning goal with a beautiful backhand move in a shootout as the Mudbugs defeated the Jackalopes 2-1.

January 28, 2005
For those that believe good things come to those who wait. I give you the 3rd period of Mudbugs rematch with Laredo Bucks in the CTC. Bucks leading 3-1 on the power play Dan Wildfong breaks in and scores shorthanded. Shane Palahicky would tie game with 2:21 left. Then in front of a franchise record crowd over 12,000 Dan Wildfong scored game winner with only 20 seconds left to complete one of the greatest comebacks in Mudbugs history. My personal favorite game of all-time. You rock Dan!!

February 15, 2005
In only 2 hours 5 minutes the Rayz stopped Mudbugs 13 game home winning streak with a 1-0 win. Both teams were 0-6 on pp and Greg Bullock scored the lone goal in 3rd period which was all Josh Blackburn Rayz rookie goalie needed. Blackburn stopped all 32 Bug attempts. Ken Carroll stopped 26 of 27 shots. Ironically several Rayz players were on the ice the year before when Bugs 15 game streak was stopped by Indy. History repeating itself ?? You decide.

February 19, 2005
Former Mudbug forward Tim Hill outta the office back on the ice. Not playing since the 2001-2002 season Tim's back wearing # 9 in Ft.Worth where Bugs would fall in 3rd period after a barrage of PP opportunites awarded the Brahmas.

Well there you have it eight exciting Mudbug hockey seasons in the book. The Bugs made playoffs 7 of 8 years playing in the Finals 4 of those 7 years winning the President Cup trophy 3 straight times. The Mudbugs are the only team in the CHL that claim that on their resume. During the post season with over 60 games played only once have they been shutout. That's pretty damn good eh?

Thomas Vanek was in no mood to celebrate his two-goal outing, which allowed him to reach the 40-goal plateau. "It doesn't mean anything. Before the year, my goal was to help this team and lead them to the playoffs. And that goal failed," said Vanek, who added an assist. "The last few days, it's just been a little bit of a daze; frustrating and trying to reflect what went wrong." TSN.ca
