An accidental clash of heads opened a cut on Barrera, who'd been cut in his last fight too. Khan went to work from the start and likely would have been in control without the presence of the gash.

TSS Take I: Khan Stops Barrera

By Michael Woods

Marco Antonio Barrera had called it quits, determined that his best days were far in the rear view mirror, and walked away from the cruelest sport after a 2007 loss to Manny Pacquiao. But an itch nagged him, and he came back for one more go. He wanted to be the first four-division Mexican champion, wanted to elevate himself conclusively above his counterpart Erik Morales as THE MAN of his era.

It was not to be for a man who hasn't been the Baby Faced Assassin for many, many moons...

Barrera, who fans hope will walk away and stay away,  looked pretty close to completely shot, and the doctor stopped the bout in the fifth,  at 2:36, from a clash-of-heads-cut on Barrera's forehead at the MEN Arena in Manchester, England on Saturday. Khan was in complete control from the start, and his work with Freddie Roach has paid off, it is apparent. His guard was high, his hands were fast, and he was at another level than the aged Mexican. The record book will read technical decision, and  judges saw it 50-45, 50-45, 50-44 to the point of the stoppage.

The Mexican Barrera, who saw his best days at 122 and 126 pounds,  was 65-6-1 NC, with 43 knocks coming in, looked slightly pensive before the first round commenced. Khan entered at 19-1, with 15 knocks, and we wondered if worry weighed on him as he waited to trade with the Mexican.

In the first, Khan kept his guard high. He backed Barrera up, and a cut opened on the Mexican’s head, as the crowd roared, sensing an early finish. Khan had a nick on his left eye, which didn’t look serious.

In the second, Khan slipped a Berrera left hook, and kept his hands up, as Freddie Roach had demanded in the camp leading up to the tussle. He ate a hook at the end of the round, and the arena exhaled in unison, relieved that he didn’t crumple. The cut, on the crown of the left side of MAB’s head, was open for business, and still leaking after the cutman worked on it.

In the third, Barrera looked to weather the storms, and hit hard with one nasty left hook at a time. The blood smeared his face, and we wondered when a cornerman or doctor would halt the one sided event. Short of using a kotex, there was no way to close the MAB cut.

In the fourth, Khan started everything with the snappy jab, and he usually put at least three punches together. The ref stopped it to let the doc look at the slice, but MAB elected to continue.

In round five, Khan bounced on his feet, moved when he had to, and looked to be in complete control. He took a right, a reminder right that MAB hadn’t folded. But then the doc looked at the cut again, determined that it was too wide, and told the ref to stop the scrap.

Barrera said after he would've won if not for the cut, and said he didn't feel any power from Khan. He said he will talk to his family and Don King about continuing fighting, and shrugged off the loss, blaming it on the cut. FYI Barrera was cut in a rust shedder in January, but that was over his left eye, not high on his head. Basically, when you get older, the skin gets thinner, and a boxer tends to get sliced more easily. Barrera's days an anything other than a steppingstone are over.

Khan said that he'd learned loads from Roach, and feels like a different fighter. Roach said that he sees Khan as his next champion, no doubt about it. No future foe was announced by promoter Frank Warren.

Stay tuned for Ronan Keenan’s more detailed report.

Bulldog:  Khan may have come of age, sticked to and executed his gameplan to perfection. Well done to Khan. Barreras worst nightmare came to fruition with a nasty cut, while it hindered Barrera severely i doubt without this there would have been much difference on who the winner would be. A sad day for Barrera who should call time on an amazin career and is a true warrior of the sport.

DaveB:  No doubt Khan looked very good in THIS FIGHT. But how will he look against someone as tall and as young as him or against Prescott? That big gash in Barrera's forehead didn't help although it would appear he was going to lose, but it really was too early to tell. What would have happened in the later rounds? Khan and Roach must have a huge weight off their shoulders right now but I really wants to see what happens when Khan fights Prescott again if he will man up and do it. He will be tested again in the future.

Fistic Fury:  Coincidence that they didn't stop the fight first time the doctor looked at it in round 4 when had they of done so the fight would of been declared a no contest. "Lets just wait for round 5 so Amir gets the W"...
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
TotoyBato:  He should have done a Ghost Guerrero...
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
TotoyBato:  MAB would have won that fight in the later rounds.

Big Daddy Misses Jim Lampley:  @ Fistic Fury : I was thinking the exact same thing. None the less Khan deserved the victory. Anyways... the Bombastic Braying British Broadcast was Beyond Bad. They made Joe Rogan ( UFC ) look like an understated voice of reason... Put Away the Pom-Poms Please! This was NOT a huge step up in competition for Khan. He is NOT ready for a Major Title Fight. Beating Barrera only fluffed up his weak resume a little bit, it does'nt gloss over the fact that he has NO chin. Someone WILL expose ( KTFO ) Khan if he ever takes a natural LW with some power.

maestro:  This is a good win for Amir's career but he wasn't really tested. Far from it. The cut on MAB's head was so nasty makes anyone wonder what would've happened if it didn't happen. Not gonna make excuses for Barrera but if that cut was on Amir instead, I don't think all of Amir's quickness can help him. I was rooting for Amir but this wasn't the turn of events I wanted. I wanted him to be really tested and still come out with a win. You would want the young gun come blazing and in the end the only one standing but to make it more meaningful, you also want the old gun steady and unhampered in dealing his own tricks. That's the scenario to have if we want the young one to learn from the battle. I don't think Amir learned much from tonight because of that sorry cut. But he did show he learned well from Roach. Now, on to the next battle!

#1 Pacfan P4P 2nd best behind Marquez:  First off I want to give my hats off the one of the best Mexican fighters to come off Mexico. Hall of Fame no doubt Barrera will be among the greats. Barrera always took on the best contenders put on the table for him. This fight proves to be the last as his body has gone through wear and tear from all the wars he has been in. Lots of memorable fights he can talk about to his kids as he can now focus more of the personal business. I surely will miss this legend but he will not be forgotten for his accomplishments.Payce.

Bulldog@fistic fury:  Good point, Barrera been the warrior he is could have played that to his advantage and didnt. This was Khans best opposition to date and i admit to been a critic of his, he has passed his first real lesson, executin an accurate gameplan, props to Roach for that. Im sure there will be another Prescott lurking around a corner somewhere in the future but for now Khan can say he has genuinly made some progress.....now for a durable LW i think, Diaz....Mannys previous LW oppostion may be a progressive step ????
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
Nandi:  Just thinking: If the cut suffered by the fighters were reversed, with Khan having the unstoppable blood flow, could Khan have performed as well as he did with the small cut he actually had in this fight? Or will he fade as fast as Juan Diaz did against Campbell and JMM?
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
Marquez_Coward_Just_Fight_Cotto_and_you'll_close_to_PAC:  There's no reason for this fight. MAB fought for nothing. Khan earned just a little fame; MAB earned little purse.
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
alexandr Hermann:  Khan will now thinking big. Watch out Marquez' camp, here comes your challenger.
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
donputo69:  it's about time we will see the end if barrera...he should of hangem up a longtime ago...as for khan?...he did not impress me at all...he fought a very washed up barrera...if that would of been barrera of 10 years ago, khan would of been KO'D by the 7th round...anyway...good luck for both of them in the future ahead...holla back!!!
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
darwin:  BARERRA IS NOT YET OVER! HE IS STILL GREAT! HE JUST GOT CUT! I THINK HE CAN STILL FIGHT 2 TO 3 FIGHTS AND A TITTLE SHOT!
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
whitebluefox:  that's what he got from sparring manny pacquiao...manny's work ethics is indeed contagious..good work amir genghis khan...
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
Ben O\'connor:  cant believe no one on here has mentioned the extent of the cut!!!!!! if your reading this having not seen the fight ............ the cut was grotesque!!!!! a really awful cut. khan was sharp and look to finish it after the cut but at no time did i think MAB was hurt or wobbled by khans shots. it was simply speed that a 1 eyed barrera couldnt cope with!! a 2 eyed barrera might have been able to give him self some angles to plant his feet and throw his own left hooks after slipping jabs! dont get me wrong i rate khan more than most do. his hands are soooo fast and if he can slip and counter he will be a very dangerous fight for ANYONE!!!!! anyone agree????
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
cdub:  the english broadcasting team was horrible. I originally wanted khan to win but once i heard the biased broadcast.. shoooot, i wanted khan on the floor... giving khan a lot of praise? my grandma woulda knocked out a blinded barrera too. disgusting.
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
Radam G aka Humble PRG:  Wow! The bout went as I suspected that it would go. The Baby Face Assassin make be baby-like in the face, but that body was old as Genghis Khan's armor, and couldn't come near to beating the rising star. Amir Khan is no flash in the pant. His speed and quickness made Barrera look a mummy stuck in cobwebs. AK will be champion and a very good one. It's AK Time! Holla!
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
vro_oli:  im a filipino but i salute to this guy mr. MARCO antonio BARERRA.........extra ordinary figther.....viva MARCO......................
Saturday Mar 14, 2009
isidro:  Freddie is definitely a big factor and the coming of Ak into maturity in himself as a fighter made this win fantastic,He should continue this way to reach his goal,to be a champion.

MisterLee75:  Wow, I miss a fight, and what a fight did I miss! Didn't think it would turn out that way! I love boxing! TSS rules!

Neophyte:  "What if Barrera didn't cut?" What if Amir got cut instead?" If that was Barrera of 10 years ago." Why so many ifs and speculations?! The fyt is finished and we all saw the results. Amir is young and sleek, although the old skin got cut by accidental head clash. Still, Marco Antonio Barrera should now hang those gloves. More often he will get cut or badly bruised because his skin tissues are not that supple anymore, hence i predicted this outcome. I don't think he can get big fyts after this. The boxing fans salute him and give him many thanks for all those spectacular wars he gave us. Like Erik, he just wait for Canastota to bestow him his HOF award. I wish for Amir to call out Juan Manauel Marquez and be tested real good......
Sunday Mar 15, 2009
MisterLee85:  Anybody notice Amir Khan doing the pacquiao glove touch and hands in the air thing like 2-3 times? Cool, that he imitates his teammate. Team Roach (not a joke) gets an A. He looks good, his fast straight punch combinations, defense, and in and out footwork look pretty nice. Man, I might start becoming a Khan fan, but I'm gonna give him one or two more fights to impress me. I ain't gonna jump on his draws after ONE single fight like some fans like to do, when I'm a fan of a fighter, I'm one for life (usually). Pc! Andre ward 2009@
Sunday Mar 15, 2009
MisterLee85:  I'd like to see Khan go to the body more, otherwise he looked sharp. Pc! TSS rules!
Sunday Mar 15, 2009
MisterLee:  Khan's counterpunching was nice too, slip dodges and counters, very nice! Gengis Khan conquers the "Middle Aged" Assassin!
Sunday Mar 15, 2009
Abdul:  Amir Khan proved how far he has developed. Not taking an early knockout on his opponent. Khan camp knew Barrera was passed his best. Freddie, who defeated him twice with Manny, also knew this guy was made for Khan at this time. Khan was a different fight with smooth excellent jabs and defence. He looks good, and I would like to see him fight Bredis again before a world title which would probably be by the end of this year.
Sunday Mar 15, 2009
BigSte:  Khan did not beat the real Barrera. There are two options. Either Barrera's age finally caught up with him or this fight was a fix with Warren and Don King "arrangement". I like Khan and am behind him as a Brit 100% but I'm an ex boxer and real fight fan so am a realist. You can't put muscles on your chin and the older fight fans can see a dodgy fight when they see it. Khan needs to fight thaxton then prescott again and that will shut people up.

simplestar:  and by the i just want to tell that .. "yes khan is fast and he is young and has the advantage over his opponents being the bigger, the taller, and has the reach advantage..but the point is ,THIS GUY "KHAN" IS A RUNNER and FIRST OF ALL HE IS POWERLESS!if you think he is tough and already in the level of Barrera how about a fight with old but sill kicking Marquez?does he dare it?age doesn't matter in boxing unless you have the courage and the will!look at Hopkins,Penalosa and even Marquez as an example.they are old but not dead.

ZARA:  Amir khan , boxed the living daylights out of barrera the mexican . Because amir khan lost one fight does not mean to say he will loose the rest .oisen fagan got the living daylights kicked out of his butt and he blamed his broken ankle and said he could have won amir if his ankle was not broken,,,,,,, exscuses after exscuses ,oisen fagan even said he was going to shatter his glass chin like a piece of glass ,,, so tell me who got shattered it was fagon shall i say faggot. The same story barrera is giving to the media oh my head was cut ,,if it was not for the cut on my head i would have won amir ,,,,,no barera you would not have won amir ,, he is to good for you thats why you lost .i am fed up of people constantly slagging amir down ,,boxers in the likes of mohammad ali mike tyson lenox lewis and many many others have lost so whats the big deal about amir , so what if he lost to presscott the chimp .i cannot believe what the critics have said about amir and the media and many other boxers ,,, i think that its all disgusting .....amir has achieved alot at his age and people are very jelous of his fame and achievments . especially being an asian muslim boxer . to al of you out there who have nothing better to say about him why dont you come try fight him and then see how many punches you can take . amir khan you are the best ignore theese low life peop[le who say things about you inshallah you will win world title ,,,,,,,,, allah subhan u thalla is allways there .
Sunday Mar 15, 2009
DaveB:  Big Ste, I agree with you, give us the fights we want and we will shut up.
Sunday Mar 15, 2009
steven:  Khan will probably dodge real opponents like Calzaghe did all his life.Cal took unfair advantage.Let's hope Khan will fight opponents in their prime at Madison Square Garden.
Sunday Mar 15, 2009
SchoolOfHardKnocks:  FisticFury, Big Daddy, DonPuto...I agree with you. First of all they should have stopped the fight in the first round and called it a no contest. But they wanted to see Khan get the win. Barrera could have easily said he couldn't see but I take my hat off to Barrera for no going out like that. This is typical of fighters like Khan that they are trying to rebuild. They put him in the ring with an old fighter that has history and that is a smaller man. Khan will be exposed as the new version of Naseem Hamed. If he really thought he was back then get revenge on what Breidis Prescott did to him. Prescott will KO him again. I was not impressed with Khan.
Sunday Mar 15, 2009
crushnburn46:  i agree.. khan is young, has power, talent and some edge in terms of reach and height advantages. but have no chin like a real warrior and that something u cant build in a gym.... remember he was stun twice by the short left hook by barrera though it wasn't that strong enough but i doubt its just a matter of time.
Sunday Mar 15, 2009
jase:  the cut ruined the fight, and WHAT a cut it was dripping into barreras eye. i think the more the fight went on barrera would have caught khans glass jaw and dropped him, barrera was not troubled by any of his shots.

Club Of Shame: A-Rod, Clemens, Bonds, Margarito Etc.
"Margarito now falls into the same category as A-Rod, Clemens, McGwire, Bonds, etc. He cheated. It doesn't matter what he says, who he beat before or how convincingly he beat them, his whole record is tarnished and becomes questionable. I use the baseball comparison because in my view steroids are baseball what loaded gloves are to boxing. We don't know what to believe now. I surely don't believe that Margarito was ignorant about the wraps. I would agree with a ban for life. "Goodbye Margarito, you were fun to watch." ---TSS reader "Fight Club" waves MargaCheato adios, wonders how many of his conquests were aided by loaded gloves
