Handbook of Bird Biology, 2nd Edition . Cornell Lab of Ornithology with Princeton University Press, 2004. ISBN: 093802762, 18 x 11, 1,303 pages, $99.50, hardcover. Buy Now >> This massive book is not something you would want to take to bed with you. It's designed to be the text of a home-study course in bird biology, with the hope that it will become recognized as "the most useful general ornithology reference available." It is an impressive home-study bird course. My recommendation: Buy the book, do the home course or just read it as time and curiosity permit, and provide table space or a stand for it.
