Projecting the Field: Sweating out the final days

Updated March 14

Only two days left, and there are a lot of teams sitting uncomfortably on the fence (is there a comfortable way to sit on a fence?).

Baylor, Tulsa and Southern California will try to steal bids from the bottom of the at-large pool in conference championship games. Temple and Duquesne play for the A-10 title, and that game will steal a bid as well. Although this bracket doesn't show it, it's possible that the bid stolen there will be Dayton's.

San Diego State may also be trying to steal a bid when it plays Utah for the Mountain West title. The Aztecs' strong performance in the league and down the stretch here may be enough to get them in anyway. They are shown as a No. 9 seed in this bracket, but that doesn't mean they are comfortably in the field. That is based on a prediction that they will beat Utah.

Maryland picked up a huge, résumé-building win over Wake Forest and now gets a shot at Duke. The Terrapins aren't in yet either, but beating the Blue Devils should seal the deal.

The SEC could also squeeze another team into the field. Semifinalists LSU and Tennessee are already in, but either Auburn, the hottest team in the league, or Mississippi State is capable of winning its way in. For Auburn, beating Tennessee would help its at-large credentials.

Reminders

This projection is unique among those you'll see because it is based on what I think the final bracket will look like, not necessarily what it would look like if the tournament started today. Of course, the later we get into the season, the more this will resemble an as-of-today bracket.

For each conference, the projected champion is the team I expect to win the conference's automatic bid. That is not necessarily the team that won the regular-season title. For example, I have Tennessee picked to win the SEC tournament, even though LSU won the regular season.

As you go down the bracket and follow the teams from a particular conference, you can assume the seeding will roughly match the order they finished in the conference standings. Non-conference performance can sometimes override that, as well as the conference tournament.

Sometimes a team has to be moved up or down a spot from its true seed to follow bracketing rules, especially the one regarding the separation of teams from the same conference. Typically, the more teams a league has in the bracket, the more seed swapping has to be done to make them fit. The committee will also move teams up and down solely to allow teams to play closer to home. You see that kind of thing more often at the bottom of the bracket.

Even though North Carolina is the overall No. 1 seed in this bracket, the opening-round winner was assigned to play Louisville because it is the highest seed at a Friday-Sunday location.

Texas is not neccessarily safe as of yet. Although I believe that they ill get in no matter what with all the bubble teams missing opportunities. If Kansas State beats Texas then K-State will be higher on the bubble list. Also if Oklahoma State can win or even get very close to Oklahoma, then Texas will fall even below them. As of right now the order of bubble teams in the big 12 is Texas, Okla ...(more)

All we need to happen today is for Virginia Tech (leading) to beat NC, Minnesota (leading) to upset Michigan State, and Villanova to beat Louisville and we can really see some interesting seeding.  These conference tournaments in the larger conferences are a joke.  UConn should have thrown in the towel in regulation last night...or played only the scrubs after a little tune- ...(more)

There is no way the Big Ten should get 8 teams into the field. Absolutely no way. The Big Ten vs. the ACC or the Big East gets destroyed (and did in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge).

Additionally, Michigan State, at Ford Field in Detroit, got routed by Carolina by 35! In fact, for the first month of the year, MSU was terribly inconsistent. Only when they got to the Big Te ...(more)

Why all this love for Penn State but Maryland is being predicted as being on the outside looking in:

RPI:  Penn State - 66; Maryland - 62 (advantage Maryland)

SOS:  Penn State - 87; Maryland - 22 (huge advantage Maryland)

Maryland has beaten 3 top 10 teams.  Penn State has beaten 1. (They both beat Michigan State - Maryland actually put a be ...(more)

With the amount of big name teams not getting in the tournament this year, I am actually looking forward to the NIT field.  Look at the list of teams available.

Big East (Providence, Notre Dame, Georgetown, and Cincy)

ACC (Miami and Virginia Tech)

Big Ten (Northwestern)

Big Twelve (Kansas St, Baylor, and Nebraska)

One basic rule I believe needs to be considered when the Selection Committee meets:

Absolutely no team with a sub-.500 conference record can get an at-large bid. Period.

If you're not good enough to win at least half your conference's games (unbalanced schedule or not), there is no way you should be considered for on ...(more)

As I watched Pitt getting trounced last night by West Virginia, I couldn't believe my ears as the commentators went on and on about how Pitt and UConn were locks for a No. 1 seed.  HUH?!?!  Louisville WON the Big East -- arguably the best conference in the country -- outright.  And after last night, they have the inside track on winning the conference tourney as well.  ...(more)

I am just wondering if i missed somrthing here.  Alot of upsets to your top seeds, did washington lose to stanford?  Maybe it got confused with the womens games, no cuz stanford didnt play uw.  Then explain to me how Washington could have been a 3 seed on Wednesday, win their game and have all kinds of 1,2,and 3 seeds lose in their respective conference tourneys, and yet I ...(more)

You had SDSU as a number 9 seed, assuming they won the MWC tournament. They came close. Now that they didn't make it. Do you drop them to a 10 or 11 seed? Or do you drop them out of the tournament completely like some bracketologist have? I think SDSU should fall to a 12 seed at the most, which is great because we all know what happens with number 12 seeds.

I do not wish to lay the jinx on Michigan State, but with the tragic and unfortunate timing of Oklahoma and Pittsburgh's conference tournament bomb-outs, can we finally reward the team that no one seems to have paid any attention to all season long?  I present to you a team that went 26-5 against the sixth most challenging schedule in the nation, racked up a 12-2 record against the RPI top ...(more)

After beating Wake Forest last night, Maryland is obviously in the field.  San Diego St. beat BYU to reach the MWC championship vs Utah so they are in the field as well.

Here are the six teams which I think have a chance of grabbing one of the three available bids:

Isn't it about time to give Wv a bit more credit...yes they have lost 10 games to this point ..but lets take a look at them. The worst was on the road to Cincy...if that is a bad loss...Others Neutral floor losses at the beginning of the year to Davidson ( By 3 points)  who was ranked at the time and Kentucky (By 9 points)....OK they get buried at Marquette..no shame there..Lose to U ...(more)

My #1 seeds:  UNC, Pitt, UCONN, Oklahoma. I believe this is how it will play out. In years past, the committee has said that the #1 seeds are all but set in stone going into the weekend, barring some huge early upsets. I think the only way Memphis steals a #1 is if Kansas wins the Big 12, then OU may lose it. Also some talk about Louisville garnering a #1. I don't think so. I think U ...(more)

1) limit the number of teams from any conference to 6 teams.  I mean, come on, if the 6 best teams in the Big East, ACC, Big 12, etc can't represent their conferences and get the wins over worse seeds, then another 2-3 teams isnt going to matter.  Those top 6 teams have proven they are the cream of their conference.

2) no team with a conference record under .500 should be cons ...(more)

Wahhhh, Michigan deserves a spot, Minnesota doesn't
