More like the LAFTA's. Good result, Galaxy is an astounding game; accessible to all, but with some real challenges lurking in its depths. Sod all those who turn their nose up at the Wii, this is a true classic. wasn't expecting mario to pick up the best game award. All things considered it was a bloody fine game though.
I agree with 99% of the decisions, but COD4, best story and characters. Your having a giraffe aren't you. It was cut and paste hollywood bs. Its one of the reasons i got so bored of it.
Fallout 3 or Deadspace should have won it. as soon as i hear the words hoo haw and its not to take the piss i instantly switch off. How can the 'Best Game' be different from the winner of 'Best Gameplay'?
Jon story and character COD4???!!!!!! are they havin a laugh???!!!!!
Great multiplayer game but for story and character tisnt at all!!!
would mass effect have been legible for this set of awards or was it the year before??? I'm surprized Mario beat off GTA and CoD4 but it is the better game. I totally agree with you my man. Heres the nominees for the story and characters award.
Assassin's Creed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Fable II Fallout 3 Grand Theft Auto IV Mass Effect
I think most will have to agree that if you think COD4 has better story and characters than any of the other games it was up against, especially Mass Effect, you need your bloody head examined. It's nice to see Mario Galaxy get some recognition. The BBC coverage made me laugh:
"One of the biggest selling games of all time, GTA IV, revolutionary in so many ways, has failed to pick up a single industry award."
Good game, yes. Revolutionary, not at all. COD4 and fallout 3 were far better than gta 4 in my humble opinion. Don't get me wrong, Galaxy is a good game. But it does nothing new and gets incredibly boring and repetative. I agree it's not groundbreaking in the way that Mario 64 was but it does have a good few new ideas. Personally, I think its the perfect refinement of the 3D platform genre, much in the same way Mario World was to Mario 3. The only problem I had with Galaxy was the purple coin stars which, as you said, got incredibly boring and repetitive. It is ridiculous, though, that it has won this award more than a year after release. But I welcome any praise for it. :) This is a bit of a joke tbh. COD4 and Mario Galaxy are noth games from 2007. And where is MGS4? that desereves a nomination at least I have to agree that Mario Galaxy deserved the award, but also baffled as to why its 2007 games that are getting awards. Its seem to be some way behind the times to me. But galaxy was very good, and definitely does do something new. It was one of the most original games in ages and I didn't feel it was repetitive. It depends how you want to look at it, COD 4 is just shooting people with modern weapons as opposed to COD 3 which is WW2 based. GTV IV was still drive here kill them, pick up that etc. I think all games are going to be repetitive in a way its just how there spread it out and add some fresh idea's in there to make interesting. P.S I like COD 4 & GTV IV as well, just examples that's all. i did give mario galaxy a go, but found it boring after a very short time, however most of last year was taking up playing COD 4 and i would have voted for that game everytime.
I also found the story in COD4 very good, it was fun, nicely paced and had variety.
Anyway well done to all. I saw a bit of a report on this this morning on the BBC. They said something along the lines of, Mario Galaxy was the surprise winner of best game. I am a little surpresed, yes.
It's not my favourite Mario game. It is still a fantastic game, I just wasn't blown away like I was with 64... but I guess that was to be expected really. I am not convinced by all the small planet hopping. Just down to my personal taste I guess. Well done Ninty! I must get round to finishing Galaxy at some point but now Peggle has just been released I don't think anything will get done any time soon! Shocked by Mario Galaxy. Sure it was fun, but best game? :?
& CoD4 for story & character? You're kidding right? It had its moments but mainly it was your usual stuff.
Found Professor Layton very boring too. Otherwise though, some well deserved wins. got to say i thought galaxy was the best thing to come out of nintendo since ocarina,by some distance.
i adored it.
it took me over a year to get the full 121 stars with both mario and luigi,so there's no complaints about depth and floating aimlessly around the space junk galaxy reminded me of the first time i played the water levels in mario 64.
quality. Apparently these awards didn't happen last year, hence the 2007 releases.
And I think Galaxy deserved to win. I certainly found it more original than COD4, GTAIV etc.
I know what some people mean about the small worlds, but I thought of the galaxies as one level, with the planets just segments. The levels never came across as small to me! GALAXY & DEAD SPACE. WIN WIN WIN. id like to find out who made the decision to give COD4 the award and slap them across the face with a big wet fish... After the disappointment that was Super Mario Galaxy not getting a single award at the Golden Joystick awards last year, I am very pleased (:D) that it has finally got an award, and the Best Game award in fact. It was my favourite game of the last year... I mean the last year-and-a-half. I am surprised that GTA IV didn't get any awards though, but I guess that there have been some other really good games released quite recently.
I am still on 100 stars on Mario Galaxy; it's getting really hard now (it's those damn purple coins), but I will have a go on it again soon. Goes to show how little the world knows about games, especially the Brits. Agree with Mario being the best game but but CoD 4? I'm sorry, but no.
And why were these two games in the running when they're both from 2007? Glad to see that Race Driver: Grid got an award. GALAXY FTW!!
But I'd say that the World Ends With You deserves best story. It wasn't even nominated. People, the Baftas are an irrelevant joke.
Who ever disagrees must contend with one stark and depressing fact: Kane & Lynch was nominated in 2007.
I rarely have anything nice to say about Ubisoft, but Far Cry 2 has been badly overlooked even if it isn't everyone's bag. EA probably deserves more after taking risks on new IPs other than Spore, despite their useless and inconvenient DRM.
I can justify supportive comments for mediocre big companies like them simply because their work recently has still been like classical Greek epics and Citizen Kane when compared with Kane & Lynch.
