The first one was fantastic (least, I thought so). I was more of an Xbox guy back then and I bought a PS2 slim for Killzone and enjoyed every minute of it, although, I was annoyed about the whole Nazi theme, as I was bored to death of World War Nazi shooters even back then (imagine my annoyance with them now).
Anyway, I think Killzone 2 seeks to de-throne Call of Duty 4. I can see the similarities and it one-ups COD4 in the animation and realism department. I don't think Killzone seeks to offset Halo this time, being as though Halo 3 was highly outdated on the gameplay and graphics side when it was launched anyway (same with Halo 2). Besides, the number one multiplayer game online is COD4 and I am almost certain this will become the new online king (at least for the Ps3).
However, I still don't understand the whole concept of placing multiple soldiers near a highly explosive barrel. I was hoping those would have died out back in 2000 but it seems games are still highly insistent on using this age old joke. I'm not saying to do away with explosives/explosions, but there are other unique ways of doing this. Every time you shoot a red barrel you think to yourself WTF? I mean, imagine an ememy captain telling his soldiers;
You three! yes, you three over there! go and wait on the balcony near the highly flammable and combustible barrel and hope he doesn't shoot at it
