THE TULIP, first published in 1999, was a national phenomenon and a national bestseller.  The beautiful presentation of interior illustrations and photos combined with a lush history both contributed to its success.  Now in paperback, THE TULIP (Bloomsbury, February 7, 2001, $14.95) will continue to delight and amaze readers in a format accessible to millions—all of the original story and illustrations intact.

THE TULIP is not a gardening book.  It is the story—indeed the history—of a flower that has made men mad.  Greed, desire, anguish, and devotion have all played their part in the development  of the tulip from a wild flower in Central Asia and the Caucasus to the worldwide phenomenon it is today.  The United States imports 3 million tulip bulbs each year—Germany and France even more.

No other flower has ever borne so much cultural radiance.  The tulip illuminates social behavior, charts political upheavals, and mirrors booms and busts.  From flower-mad-Sultans to its breeding grounds in Holland, the Tulip’s history illustrates some of the most common flaws of human nature.  After six years of meticulous research, Anna Pavord in THE TULIP continues to delight history buffs, gardeners, and all readers who just love to become engrossed in a great story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Anna Pavord is the gardening correspondent of the Independent, and the author of widely praised gardening books including The Flowering Year, Gardening Companion, The New Kitchen Garden, and The Border Book.  As well as writing for the Observer for over twenty years, she has contributed to Country Life, Country Living, and Elle Décor, and is an associate editor of Gardens Illustrated.  She lives in Dorset, England, in an old rectory with a large garden that she has been developing for twenty years.  Constantly experimenting with new combinations of flowers and foliage, she finds it a tremendous source of pleasure.
