2 US soldiers killed in aircraft accident in Iraq
BAGHDAD: A U.S. military helicopter made a "hard landing" Saturday after hitting wires in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, killing two American soldiers, the U.S. military said.
The OH-58 Kiowa Warrior helicopter went down at about 6:10 p.m. in the eastern part of the city, the military said.
"The incident appears to be combat-unrelated and there was no enemy contact in the area," it said.
The helicopter hit a communications tower belonging to the main office in Mosul of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, a Kurdish political party, said a party official who requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media.
The official said the accident cut electricity in the area.
Insurgents are active in Mosul, which remains a major security challenge despite a sharp drop in violence in other parts of Iraq.
