Zentendo
Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi is a decent platformer that tries a little to hard to put as many features as possible into the game and ends up over complicating itself. A few odd design and control choices hamper the moody and unique atmosphere and pales in comparison to its console counterpart.

GameZone
There’s nothing here that will have you itching to go back and play through after your first run through.

IGN
Rise of the Fungi is unique and building scav is rewarding, but the awkward combat and cheap kills sour the experience.

Worth Playing
Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi for the NDS had some potential to be an interesting title and provided some neat concepts, but unfortunately, it stumbles in the execution. The controls are very clunky, and the unfair deaths due to poor platforming make it very difficult to enjoy this title.

Nintendojo
The game has nearly all the elements of a sleeper hit: interesting premise, compelling art design, eclectic sound, an interesting weapon creation system, and some unique gameplay mechanics. Unfortunately, all of that is drowned out by a few critical design mistakes, chief among them being a broken platforming system that leads to far too many senseless deaths.

Nintendo Power
Despite being packed with good ideas, the platformer stumbles constantly in its execution. [Holiday 2008, p.86]

Game Chronicles
I found the Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi for the Nintendo DS a slightly below average action game that just had too many small problems adding up to a not fun game.

GameSpot
Like a poisonous mushroom, Rise of the Fungi looks good but makes you feel bad.

GameShark
In fact, the aesthetic and fun weapon building elements save this title from utter mediocrity.

GameSpy
If there's a sequel, maybe the developers will spend as much time fleshing out the game as they did their concept art.

Cheat Code Central
Even though the controls and gameplay are basically broken, the game isn't entirely without merit.

Games Radar (in-house)
The worst thing is, there was tremendous potential here. The art style is fantastic, and the campy, B-movie concept is golden. And the way you make new weapons out of garbage you find – sticks, needles, broken shards of glass – is really fun. But once you add the gameplay in there, ugggh. Mushrooms grow where living things have died – in this case, the underlying corpse belonged to fun.

NGamer UK
Cribs some good ideas from the Wii title but implements them badly - much like every other element of the game. [Mar 2009, p.69]

Gaming Nexus
Mushroom Men: Rise of the Fungi is juggling too many play styles at the same time. Instead of coming together into a fun package, the platforming, RPG elements and real-time combat get in each others’ way.
