About the Nintendo 64

Nintendo 64The N64 was Nintendo's last cartridge-based home console and is seen by many as a massive miscalculation on the part of the Japanese giant. By sticking with carts Nintendo effectively removed itself from the console race as its rivals moved onto optical media which was cheaper and allowed more storage.

However the machine was home to a massive selection of quality software (mostly produced by Nintendo themselves). Games like Mario 64, Goldeneye, Zelda and Donkey Kong were complimented by the excellent N64 pad, which introduced a generation of gamers to analogue control and was copied by rivals Sony and Sega.

Although it cost Nintendo their place as number one in the videogame industry, the N64 still ranks as an excellent machine and proves that Nintendo's quality of software was well above that of other companies.
