About the Sega Game Gear

Game GearSega released the Game Gear in direct response to Nintendo's Gameboy. Work began on the console in 1989 under the codename "Project Mercury", and the system was released in Japan on October 6, 1990. It was released in North America and Europe in 1991 and in Australia in 1992.

The machine was basically a portable Master System, and there was even a converter which allowed you to play Master System games on the machine. Although it saw some excellent titles and had some cool extras (like the famous TV tuner), the Game Gear suffered the same fate as Atari's Lynx, mainly because it eat through batteries like nobody's business. The best solution was to run the machine from standard wall socket (it took the same PSU as the Megadrive) - but then this made it rather pointless, as it was no longer 'portable'.

The machine saw a raft of Sonic games (most of which stayed in Japan) but it wasn't enough to beat the Gameboy. However, support only ran out in early 1997 - so it lasted much longer than Atari's handheld, at least.
