Jennifer Aniston is John Mayer's Red Carpet Crutch

While it was Jennifer Aniston who had to get up on the Oscar stage and stare down at the smiley faces of her ex-husband Brad Pitt, and the "uncool" Angelina Jolie he left her for, her boyfriend John Mayer says it was him who was nervous on Oscar night. And who can blame him? The Kodak Theater is a far cry from the dimly lit basement we imagine he spends most of his time in, strumming his guitar, rolling joints, and giggling over ideas for his next home video.

Speaking on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, Mayer said, "You can go from a Grammy winner to a water boy when you walk into the Kodak Theatre on Oscar night. That's just, like, a whole different level." Mayer added that once he got his nerves under control the whole thing was "really, really fun."

Mayer told Seacrest that he originally decided to attend the event as "moral support" for Aniston. (We don't think she's going to like that. It makes her sound just a little wimpy). But he admitted it was Aniston who supported him in the end. Said Mayer, "I basically stepped into the picture frame of Hollywood. For one night, I put on the most amazing suit and entered into the picture frame. You have to really be with someone that you know who has your back in that situation. And she did, and it was really great."

As for why he decided it was time to stroll the red carpet with Jen, Mayer explained, "At some point, you feel comfortable and say, 'This is the choice I want to make. I think a year is a pretty good period of time with which to say, 'Let's go have a really good time at the Oscars!'"

We make fun of this couple a lot, but we felt some serious empathy for Aniston on Oscar night, when she was forced to muddle through her incredibly dull co-presenting duties, while getting grilled by Jolie's icy gaze. And the whole thing was made even more terrifying by the strange giant green jewels she was decked out in. So we'll admit - for Jen's sake - that we're glad she and Mayer had fun at the Oscars.
